  • In this paper, we discuss face verification using the optimum nonlinear composite filter. The optimum nonlinear composite filter is derived by minimizing the output energy due to the additive noise and the input scene. We construct the nonlinear composite filter with 3 training images. The performance is analyzed in terms of the detection probability and the false alarm probability showing the robustness to distortion and noise.

  • The active structural control has emerged as structural safety of structures against natural loadings such as earthquake and wind loadings. Of many control algorithms, Sliding-Mode Control (SMC) can design both linear controller and nonlinear controller. The robustness against parameter variations as well as excitation uncertainties that is imparted to the SMC due to its nonlinear control action, could make SMC an attractive control algorithm when dealing with structures where the external excitation constitutes the main uncertainty in the system. This paper demonstrates experimentally the efficacy of the SMC algorithm based on the active mass driver system in reducing the response of seismically excited buildings. The SMC control strategy is verified with the experimental study on the one-story building model equipped with the active mass driver.

  • This paper addresses the application of an active magnetic bearing (AMB) system to levitate the elevation axis of an electro-optical sight mounted on a moving vehicle. In this type of system, it is desirable to retain the elevation axis in an air-gap between magnetic bearing stators while the vehicle is moving. To eliminate disturbance responses, a disturbance observer based sliding mode control is developed. This control can decouple disturbance observation dynamics from sliding mode dynamics and preserves the robustness of the sliding control. The sliding surfaces are designed in the consideration of scattering of received image. The proposed control is applied to a 2-DOF active magnetic bearing system subject to base motion. Along with experimental results, the feasibility of the proposed technique is illustrated.

  • This paper proposes an adaptive feedforward controller (AFC) based on LMS for periodic disturbance rejection in active magnetic bearing system. The proposed controller does not alter the stability and robustness of the existing AMB system. It is shown that the control delay due to the eddy current as well as runout and unbalance can be identified and compensated using the estimated displacement from the measured magnetic flux. The simulation results confirm that the proposed scheme successfully identifies and compensates for the runout, unbalance and eddy current effect, leading to a high-precision magnetic bearing system.

  • One fo the major problems in speech recognition is the mismatch between training and testing environments. Recently, SNR normalization technique, which normalizes the dynamic range of frequency channels in mel-scaled filterbank, was proposed[1]. While it showed improved robustness against additive noise, it requires a reliable speech detection mechanism and several adaptation parameters to be optimized. In this paper, we propose a modified SNR normalization technique. In this technique, we take simply the maximum of filterbank output and predetermined masking constant for each frequency band. According to the speaker-independent isolated word recognition in car noise environments, proposed modification yields better recognition performance that the original SNR normalization method, with rather reduced complexity.

  • This paper proposes a high performance position controller for a driving system using a time optimal controller which has been widely used to control driving systems to achieve desired reference position or velocity in a minimum response time. The main purpose of this research lies in an improvement of transient response performance rather than that of steady-state response in comparison with other control strategies. In order to refine the scheme of time optimal control, Lyapunov stability proofs are incorporated in a controller of standard second order system model. This scheme is applied to the control of a driving system. In view of the simulation and experiment results, the standard second order system model exhibits better minimum-time control performance and robustness than double integral system model does.

  • In this paper, a novel watermarking technique is proposed to authenticate the owner-ship of copyright for the digital contents. Using the 2-level DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform) we divide a specific frequency band into detailed blocks and apply PIM(picture information measure). After the complexity is calculated, the watermark is embedded in only on high complexity areas. Conventional watermarking technique damages to the original image, because it does not consider the feature of the whole area or a specific frequency band. Easily affected by noise and compression, it is difficult to extract the watermark. However, the proposed watermarking technique, considering the complexity of input image, does not damage to the original image Simulation result show that the proposed technique has the robustness of JPEG compression, noise and filtering such as a general signal processing

  • Torsional oscillations of the drivetrain in electric vehicles are generated under rapid driving conditions. These lead to an uncomfortable jerking of the vehicle and an increased stress of the mechanical components. To suppress torsional oscillations, the low pass and notch filters between the torque command from the acceleration pedal and electric motor input torque are suggested. The filter parameters are optimized based on Taguchi method with $L_{18}(3^5)$ orthogonal array. The signal to noise (S/N) ratio mainly depends on slew rate of motor input torque, damping ratio and natural frequency of notch filter. With the proposed suppression control scheme, the S/N ratio is shown to be increased by 4.7dB and the torque overshoot of the drive shaft is reduced to 30%.

  • This paper compares input shaping techniques for controlling residual vibration of flexible structures. Input shaping generates vibration-reducing shaped commands through convolution of an impulse sequence with the desired command. Both feedforward and feedback control approaches with/without input shaper for uncertain dynamical systems are investigated to evaluate the control performances. The control objective is to achieve a fast settling time and robustness to plant uncertainty, to eliminate residual vibrations. It is shown by a series of simulation that a properly designed feedback controller with input shaper performs well, as compared with open-loop controller with input shaper.

  • A robust damage detection method using short-time Fourier transform and beating phenomena is presented as an estimating tool of the healthiness of large structures. The present technique makes use of beating phenomena that manifest themselves when two signals of similar frequencies are added or subtracted. Unlike most existing methods based on vibration signals, the present approach does not require an analytic model for target structures. Furthermore, the main advantage of the proposed method compared to the competing diagnostic method using vibration data is its robustness. The proposed method is not affected by the amplitude of exciting signals and the location of exciting points. From a measuring view point. the location of sensing point have no influence on the performance of the present method. With a view to verifying the effectiveness of this method. a series of experiments are made and the results show its possibility as a robust damage diagnostic method.
