  • When fabricating a vision chip, we should consider the noise problem, such as the fixed pattern noise(FPN) due to the process variation. In this paper, we propose an edge-detection circuit based on biological retina using the offset-free column readout circuit to reduce the FPN occurring in the photo-detector. The offset-free column readout circuit consists of one source follower, one capacitor and five transmission gates. As a result, it is simpler and smaller than a general correlated double sampling(CDS) circuit. A vision chip for edge detection has been designed and fabricated using $0.35\;{\mu}m$ 2-poly 4-metal CMOS technology, and its output characteristics have been investigated.

  • This paper describes a novel stereo vision based localization of free parking site, which recognizes the target position of automatic parking system. Pixel structure classification and feature based stereo matching extract the 3D information of parking site in real time. The pixel structure represents intensity configuration around a pixel and the feature based stereo matching uses step-by-step investigation strategy to reduce computational load. This paper considers only parking site divided by marking, which is generally drawn according to relevant standards. Parking site marking is separated by plane surface constraint and is transformed into bird's eye view, on which template matching is performed to determine the location of parking site. Obstacle depth map, which is generated from the disparity of adjacent vehicles, can be used as the guideline of template matching by limiting search range and orientation. Proposed method using both the obstacle depth map and the bird's eye view of parking site marking increases operation speed and robustness to visual noise by effectively limiting search range.

  • In this paper, an iterative MAP approach using a Bayesian model based on the lognormal distribution for image intensity and a GRF for image texture is proposed for despeckling the SAR images that are corrupted by multiplicative speckle noise. When the image intensity is logarithmically transformed, the speckle noise is approximately Gaussian additive noise, and it tends to a normal probability much faster than the intensity distribution. The MRF is incorporated into digital image analysis by viewing pixel type s as states of molecules in a lattice-like physical system defined on a GRF. Because of the MRFGRF equivalence, the assignment of an energy function to the physical system determines its Gibbs measure, which is used to model molecular mteractions. The proposed adaptive iterative method was evaluated using simulation data generated by the Monte Carlo method. In the extensive experiments of this study, the proposed method demonstrated the capability to relax speckle noise and estimate noise-free intensity.

  • For edge detection methods, there are Sobel, Prewitt, Roberts and Canny edge detector, and these methods have insufficient detection characteristics in the image corrupted by the impulse noise. Therefore in this paper, in order to improve these disadvantages of the previous methods and to effectively detect the edge in the impulse noise environment, using the $5{\times}5$ mask, the noise factors within the $3{\times}3$ mask based on the central pixel is determined, and depending on its status, for noise-free it is processed as is, and if noise is found, by obtaining the estimated mask using the adjacent pixels of each factor, an algorithm that detects the edge is proposed.

MRFs have been used to model spatially correlated and signal-dependent phenomena for SAR speckled images. The MRF is incorporated into digital image analysis by viewing pixel types as slates of molecules in a lattice-like physical system defined on a GRF Because of the MRF-SRF equivalence, the assignment of an energy function to the physical system determines its Gibbs measure, which is used to model molecular interactions. The proposed Point-Jacobian Iterative MAP estimation method was first evaluated using simulation data generated by the Monte Carlo method. The methodology was then applied to data acquired by the ESA's ERS satellite on Nonsan area of Korean Peninsula. In the extensive experiments of this study, The proposed method demonstrated the capability to relax speckle noise and estimate noise-free intensity.

  • As society has developed rapidly toward a highly advanced digital information age, a multimedia communication service for acquisition, transmission and storage of image data as well as voice has being commercialized. However, image data is always corrupted by various noises during image processing, so researches for removing noises have been continued until now. In this paper, in order to remove impulse noise we proposed modified adaptive switching median filter that consists of two stages: noise detection and noise removal. Proposed algorithm only processes noise pixels and these noise pixels are replaced by filter output, so proposed algorithm performs well not only removes noise but also preserves edge information. Also we compare existing methods using PSNR(peak signal to noise ratio) as the standard of judgement of improvement effect and choose conventional algorithms to compare with our proposed method.

  • In this work, a new adaptive weighted mean filter is proposed for preserving image details while effectively suppressing impulse noise. The proposed filter is based on a noise pixel detection-estimation strategy. All the pixels are first detected using an impulse noise detector. Then the detected noise pixels are replaced with the output of the weighted mean filter over adaptive working window according to the rate of corrupted neighborhood pixels, while noise-free pixels are left unaltered. We compare the proposed filter to other existing filters in the qualitative measure and quantitative measures such as PSNR and MAE as well as computation time to verify the capability of the proposed filter. Extensive simulations show that the proposed filter performs better than other filters in impulse noise suppression and detail preservation without increasing of running time.

  • The present paper deals with extraction of figures and characters from their background using the knowledge of color. At each pixel of the image on the CRT sent from a video camera, RGB values are transformed into the values in another color system, HSI, where "H" denotes hue;"S" denotes saturation;"I" denotes intensity. Representing color in HSI color space is advantageous, since a human feels color mainly in hue with the aid of brightness and purity. Comparing HSI data thus obtained with the masked original image detects noise-free edges included in the orginal image. Then setting a set of HSI thresholds and changing it identifies the portion of image of the same color. This color information is used in recongnizing characters and figures as an auxiliary system of a hierachical figure categorization method for characters and figures recognition.cters and figures recognition.

  • In this paper, we propose a parameter-free smoothing method for speckle images, i.e., an adaptive least squares image smoothing technique implemented in a multistep environment. The pertinent smoothing window size at a given pixel is determined by the discontinuity measure which is defined by the ratio of the local variance and mean squares of intensity values of pixels over the smoothing window centered there. The mode of the discontinuity measure at each step is estimated to replace the noise variance parameter that is required in the adaptive smoothing. Computer simulation shows that the proposed multistep technique can smooth homogeneous regions satisfactorily while preserving fine details near boundaries.
