  • Purpose: Nodal metastasis is the main prognostic factor in the patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). We investigated the association between tumor-associated lymphatics and OSCC characteristics. Methods: Thirty-four specimens were used for the immunohistochemical staining with the antibody for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-C, VEGF-D, VEGF receptor (VEGFR)-3, phosphorylated VEGFR-3, D2-40, and matrix metallproteinases (MMPs). We observed the distribution of the lymphangiogenic factors and quantified the degree of expression. We determined lymphatic vessel density (LVD) and lymphatic vessel dilatation with D2-40 immunostaining. We assessed the association of LVD or lymphatic vessel dilatation with tumor progression or tumor differentiation. Results: OSCC cells expressed lymphangiogenic ligands. Lymphangiogenic receptor, VEGFR-3, was expressed and activated in some tumor cells as well as in tumor-associated endothelial cells. LVD was not associated with tumor size or nodal status, but lymphatic vessel dilatation was higher in tumors with nodal metastasis, and also higher in poorly differentiated tumors. In stromal area of OSCC, MMP-1 and MMP-10 were up-regulated and the basement membrane of tumor-associated endothelial cells was destroyed by these collagenases. Conclusion: In the primary tumors with nodal metastasis, especially in poorly differentiated OSCC, tumor cells invaded the dilated lymphatic vessels via ruptured sites. MMP-1 and MMP-10 are important in the lysis of the glycocalyx inside the tumor-associated lymphatic endothelial cells.

  • DPP4 (dipeptidyl peptidase-4), a highly conserved transmembrane glycoprotein with an exo-peptidase activity, has been shown to contribute to glucose metabolism, immune regulation, signal transduction, and cell differentiation. Here, we show that DPP4 is involved in control of activin/nodal signaling in Xenopus early development. In support of this, gain of function of DPP4 augmented Smad2 phosphorylation as well as expression of target genes induced by activin or nodal signal. In addition, Dpp4 and Xnr1 showed synergistic effect on induction of ectopic dorsal body axis, when co-injected at suboptimal doses in early embryos. Conversely, saxagliptin, a DPP4 inhibitor repressed activin induction of Smad2 phosphorylation. Notably, overexpression of Dpp4 disrupted specification of dorsal body axis of embryo, leading to malformed phenotypes such as spina bifida and a shortened and dorsally bent axis. Together, these results suggest that DPP4 functions as a potentiator of activin/nodal signaling pathway.

  • This paper introduces a new two-step procedure for PWR depletion analyses. This procedure adopts the albedo-corrected parameterized equivalence constants (APEC) method to correct the lattice-based raw cross sections (XSs) and discontinuity factors (DFs) by accounting for neutron leakage. The intrinsic limitations of the conventional two-step methods are discussed by analyzing a 2-dimensional SMR with the commercial DeCART2D/MASTER code system. For a full-scope development of the APEC correction, the MASTER nodal code was modified so that the group constants can be corrected in the middle of a microscopic core depletion. The basic APEC methodology is described and color-set problems are defined to determine the APEC functions for burnup-dependent XS and DF corrections. Then the new two-step method was applied to depletion analyses of the SMR without thermal feedback, and its validity was evaluated in terms of being able to predict accurately the reactor eigenvalue and nodal power profile. In addition, four variants of the original SMR core were also analyzed for a further evaluation of the APEC-assisted depletion. In this work, several combinations of the burnup-dependent and -independent XS and DF corrections were also considered. The results show that the APEC method could enhance the nodal equivalence significantly with inexpensive additional costs.

  • Single-layered grid space steel roof structure is an architectural system in which the structural ability of the nodal connection system greatly influences the stability of the entire structure. Many bolt connection systems have been suggested to enhance for better construct ability, but the structural behavior and maximum resistance of the connection system according to the size of bolt clearance play were difficult to identify. In particular, the identification of bending stiffness of the connection system is very important due to the characteristics of shell structures in which membrane stresses based on bending force effect significantly. To identify effective structural behavior and maximum bearing force, four representative nodal connection systems were selected and nonlinear numerical analysis were performed. The numerical analysis considering the size of the bolt clearance were performed to investigate structural behavior and maximum values of the bending force. In addition, the type of effective nodal connection system were evaluated. As a result, the connection system, which has two shear plane, represented high bending stiffness.

  • The authors developed a nodal network model that simulates the flow of moist air and the thermal behavior of a target area. The nodal network model was enhanced using a parameter estimation technique based on the measured temperature, humidity, and schedule data. However, the nodal model is not good enough for predicting humidity of the target space, having 55.6% of CVRMSE. It is because re-evaporation effect could not be modeled due to uncertain factors in the field measurement. Hence, a data-driven model was introduced using an artificial neural network (ANN). It was found that the data-driven model is suitable for predicting the condensation compared to the nodal model satisfying ASHRAE Guideline with 3.36% of CVRMSE for temprature, relative humidity, and surface temperature on average. The model will be embedded in automated devices for real-time predictive control, to minimize the risk of surface condensation at dressroom in an apartment housing.

  • This paper presents the development of a nodal diffusion code, RAST-V, and its verification and validation for VVER (vodo-vodyanoi energetichesky reactor) analysis. A VVER analytic solver has been implemented in an in-house nodal diffusion code, RAST-K. The new RAST-K version, RAST-V, uses the triangle-based polynomial expansion nodal method. The RAST-K code provides stand-alone and two-step computation modes for steady-state and transient calculations. An in-house lattice code (STREAM) with updated features for VVER analysis is also utilized in the two-step method for cross-section generation. To assess the calculation capability of the formulated analysis module, various verification and validation studies have been performed with Rostov-II, and X2 multicycles, Novovoronezh-4, and the Atomic Energy Research benchmarks. In comparing the multicycle operation, rod worth, and integrated temperature coefficients, RAST-V is found to agree with measurements with high accuracy which RMS differences of each cycle are within ±47 ppm in multicycle operations, and ±81 pcm of the rod worth of the X2 reactor. Transient calculations were also performed considering two different rod ejection scenarios. The accuracy of RAST-V was observed to be comparable to that of conventional nodal diffusion codes (DYN3D, BIPR8, and PARCS).

  • RAST-F is a new full-core analysis code based on the two-step approach that couples a multi-group cross-section generation Monte-Carlo code MCS and a multi-group nodal diffusion solver. To demonstrate the feasibility of using MCS/RAST-F for fast reactor analysis, this paper presents the coupled nodal code verification results for the MET-1000 and CAR-3600 benchmark cores. Three different multi-group cross-section calculation schemes are employed to improve the agreement between the nodal and reference solutions. The reference solution is obtained by the MCS code using continuous-energy nuclear data. Additionally, the MCS/RAST-F nodal solution is verified with results based on cross-section generated by collision probability code TULIP. A good agreement between MCS/RAST-F and reference solution is observed with less than 120 pcm discrepancy in keff and less than 1.2% root-mean-square error in power distribution. This study confirms the two-step approach MCS/RAST-F as a reliable tool for the three-dimensional simulation of reactor cores with fast spectrum.
