The least-squares formulation for rigid-plasticity based on J$_2$-flow rule and infinitesimal theory and its meshfree implementation using moving least-squares approximation are proposed. In the least-squares formulation the squared residuals of the constitutive and equilibrium equations are minimized. Those residuals are represented in a form of first-order differential system using the velocity and stress components as independent variables. For the enforcement of the boundary and frictional contact conditions, penalty scheme is employed. Also the reshaping of nodal supports is introduced to avoid the difficulties due to the severe local deformation near the contact interface. The proposed least-squares meshfree method does not require any structure of extrinsic cells during the whole process of analysis. Through some numerical examples of metal forming processes, the validity and effectiveness of the method are investigated.

A new finite element model will be presented to analyze the nonlinear behavior of not only RC beams and slabs, but also RC beams strengthened by a patch repair. The numerical approach is based on the p-version degenerate shell element including theory of anisotropic laminated composites, theory of materially and geometrically nonlinear plates. In the nonlinear formulation of this model, the total Lagrangian formulation is adopted with large deflections and moderate rotations being accounted for in the sense of von Karman hypothesis. The material model is based on hardening rule, crushing condition, plate-end debonding strength model and so on. The Gauss-Lobatto numerical quadrature is applied to calculate the stresses at the nodal points instead of Gauss points. The validity of the proposed p-version finite element model is demonstrated through several numerical examples for the load-deflection curves, the ultimate loads, and the failure modes of reinforced connote slabs and RC beams bonded with steel plates or FRP plates compared with available experimental and numerical results.

Geometrical non-linearity due to the flexibility of cables must be considered efficiently in the dynamic analysis of cable structures. In this paper, formulation of tangent stiffness matrix of elastic catenary cable is derived by using relative nodal displacements, self-weight and unstressed cable length. Free vibration analysis of simply supported cable using elastic catenary cable elements is conducted and compared with that using truss elements. The result shows that elastic catenary cable elements are more compatible than truss elements in the case of analysis of cable structures. Furthermore, the characteristic of dynamic behaviors of cable structures by temporary unstability phenomenon is confirmed.
Some sections of concrete highway pavements have been viewed with great concern by highway officials and engineers due to the severe cracking and failure problems. This is mainly due to the traffic loads in addition to temperature variations between top and bottom of concrete slab, which cause the concrete slab to curl up and down depending on the thermal gradient, respectively. Subsequently, a major consideration was given to the derivation of stiffness matrix and equivalent nodal loads due to the uniform gravity load, temperature and shrinkage of concrete. And the structural behavior of concrete highway pavement due to the temperature variations throughout the nations has been emphasized.

In this paper, three dimensional linear conforming variable-finite elements are presented with the aid of a smoothed integration (a class of stabilized conforming nodal integration), for mnltiscale mechanics problems. These elements meet the desirable properties of an interpolation such as the Kronecker delta condition, the partition of unity condition and the positiveness of interpolation function. The necessary condition of linear exactness is fully relaxed by employing the smoothed integration, which renders us to meet the linear exactness in a straightforward manner. This novel element description extend the category of the conventional finite elements space to ration type function space and give the flexibility on the number of nodes of element which are fixed in the conventional finite elements. Several examples are provided to show the convergence and the accuracy of the proposed elements, and to demonstrate their potential with emphasis on the multiscale mechanics problems such as global/local analysis, nonmatching contact problems, and modeling of composite material with defects.
Simplified finite element model of spark ignition (SI) engine to analyse combustion heat transfer is presented. The model was discredited with 3D thermal elements of global length 5 mm. The fuel type is petrol. Internal nodal temperature of cylinder body is defined as 21000C to represent occurrence of gasoline combustion. Material information and isotropic material properties are taken from published report. The heat transfer analysis is done for the instant of combustion. The model is validated by comparing the computed maximum temperature at the piston surface with the published result. The computed temperature gradient at the crucial parts are plotted and discussed. It has been found that the critical top surface suffered from thermal and the materials used to construct the engine parts strongly influenced the temperature distribution in the engine. The model is capable to analyze heat transfer in the engine reasonably and efficiently.
In this paper, the analysis of cold forging in final state has been performed by using rigid-plastic FEM. For the analysis, the geometry and flow stress of the workpiece are required. One method to obtain the geometry is measurement of that made from experimet. To evaluate the flow stress, average effective strain is calculated from the load-stroke diagram by using energy method. The numerical test performed to show the validity of propose method. The analysis of PFIR, the precision forging of spurgear with inside relif, is performed.
In metal forming, there are problems with recurrent geometric characteristics without explicitly prescibed boundary conditions. In such problems, so-called recurrent boundary conditions must be introduced. In this paper, as a practical application of the proposed method, the precision cold forging of a helical gear has been simulated by a three-dimensional rigid-plastic finite element method and compared with the experiment. The application of recurrent boundary conditions to helical gear forging analysis is proved to be effective and valid. the elastic stress analysis of the die for helical gear forging has been calculated by using the nodal force at the final stage obtained from the rigid-plastic finite element analysis. In order to obtain more precise gear products, the elastic analysis of the die after release of punch and the elastic spring-back analysis of product after ejection have been performed, and the final dimension of the computational product has been in good agreement with that of the experimental product.

A new bandwidth reduction algorithm is developed by combining the two-step approach and the frontal ordering scheme. In the two-step approach, finite elements are numbered first, followed by nodal numbering based on the graph theory. The concept of wave front is incorporated into it to control the cardinality of the set of adjacent nodes and the bandwidth to be achieved. They are controlled systematically by rational selection of next candidates with the purpose of getting the smaller bandwidth efficiently. Eighteen meshes are renumbered and the results are compared with those of well-known algorithms. The results demonstrate the efficiency and the reliability of the proposed algorithm.
