Mechanical properties and electrical resistivity of SiC-TiC composites with nitrate sintering additives

  • We fabricated SiC-TiC composites by hot-press sintering with aluminum and yttrium nitrate additive and evaluated crystal phase, relative density, microstructure, electrical resistivity and mechanical properties of the sintered body. And the effect of nitrate additive on the densification of SiC-TiC composites was compared with that of Al2O3 and Y2O3 additives. Because nitrate additives were uniformly dispersed in SiC and TiC mixture, it inhibited the growth of crystal grain between each other and formed fine and uniform microstructure, thereby improving mechanical properties and electrical resistivity. The electrical resistivity and flexural strength of the SiC-TiC composite with aluminum and yttrium nitrate additive were 2.3 Ω·cm and 652.3 MPa respectively.

Compressive Strength Characteristics of 3D Printing Concrete in Low Temperature Environment by Using Early Strength Improvement Type Additive (조강형 첨가제 사용에 따른 저온환경에서의 3D 프린팅 콘크리트의 압축강도 특성)

  • The self-weight of the 3D printing concrete increases with increasing printing height. Therefore, the lower layer must be hardened within a suitable time to secure continuous printing performance. In particular, the hardening speed of concrete is slow in the winter season when the temperature was low. Hence, the early strength of 3D printing concrete requires improvement. In domestic and international literature, cases of increasing the early strength of concrete using inorganic chemical additives, such as amine-based, nitrate-based, sodium-based, and calcium-based, have been reported. In this study, early strength improvement-type additive samples (amine-based, nitrate-based, sodium-based) were prepared, and their performance was evaluated. When using a nitrate-based additive, the early strength was increased significantly in a 10 ℃ environment. In addition, it was possible to secure a higher early strength than the existing 3D printing concrete mixed at 20 ℃.

Study on Characteristics of Electrodeposited Thin Copper Film by Inorganic Additives in Pyrophosphate Copper Plating Bath (피로인산동욕의 무기첨가제에 의한 전해동박의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The copper deposit on steel plate was prepared by pyrophosphate copper plating solution made with variation of inorganic additive. $NH_4OH$ and $NH_4NO_3$ were used as inorganic additives. The copper layer characteristics - tensile strength, crystallite size and crystal orientation - were evaluated by X-ray diffraction and Universal Test Machine. The presence of ammonium nitrate results in reduction of average roughness value from $0.08{\mu}m$ to $0.03{\mu}m$. In pyrophosphate copper plating solution without Inorganic additive, tensile strength of electrodeposit copper foil was reduced from 600 MPa to 180 MPa after 7 days aging. However, when adding ammonium nitrate, there was almost no change of tensile strength, intensity of crystal orientation - (111), (200) and (220) - and crystallite size (2~30 nm).

  • This study was carried out to investigate the applicability of PVC membrane-based ion-selective electrodes for macronutrients (K, Ca, and N) by measuring of potassium, calcium, nitrate ions in hydroponic nutrient solution. The capabilities of two ion-selective membranes with varying chemical compositions for each ion were evaluated in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, and lifetime to choose sensing elements suitable for measuring typical ranges of nutrient concentrations in hydroponic solutions. The selected calcium and nitrate ion-selective membranes showed effectively sensitive responses to calcium and nitrate ions with lifetimes of 25 and 15 days, respectively. The addition of a cation additive to the potassium membrane cocktail allowed its sensitivity to be increased whereas its lifetime was reduced from 30 days to 10 days.

Effect of Encapsulating Nitrate in Sesame Gum on In vitro Rumen Fermentation Parameters

  • Encapsulation is a method used to protect material from certain undesirable environments, for controlled release at a more favorable time and place. Animal productivity would be enhanced if feed additives are delivered to be utilized at their site of action, bypassing the rumen where they are likely to be degraded by microbial action. A novel method of encapsulation with sesame gum was used to coat nitrate, a known enteric methane mitigating agent, and tested for the effect on methane reduction and other in vitro fermentation parameters using rumen fluid from cannulated Hanwoo steers. Orchard grass was used as basal diet for fermentation. The treatments were matrix (1.1 g sesame gum+0.4 g sesame oil cake) only, encapsulated nitrate (matrix+nitrate [21 mM]), free nitrate (21 mM), and a control that contained no additive. Analyses of fermentation parameters were done at 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, and 48 h time periods. In comparison to control, both free and encapsulated nitrate produced significantly reduced (p<0.01) methane (76% less) and also the total volatile fatty acids were reduced. A significantly higher (p<0.01) concentration of ammonia nitrogen was obtained with the encapsulated nitrate treatment (44%) compared to the free form (28%) and matrix only (20%) (p = 0.014). This might suggest slow release of encapsulated nitrate so that it is fully reduced to ammonia. Thus, this pioneering study found a significant reduction in methane production following the use of sesame gum encapsulated nitrate that shows the potential of a controlled release system in enhancing sustainability of ruminant production while reducing/eliminating the risk of nitrite toxicity.

Mechanical and Thermal Conductivity Properties of Yttrium Nitrate Added AlN Sintering Body (Y(NO3)3·6H2O 첨가된 AlN 소결체의 기계적 및 열전도도 특성)

  • Aluminum nitride (AlN) is used by the semiconductor industry that has requirements for high thermal conductivity. The theoretical thermal conductivity of single crystal AlN is 320W/mK. Whereas, the values measured for polycrystalline AlN ceramics range from 20 W/mK to 280 W/mK. The variability is strongly dependent upon the purity of the starting materials and non-uniform dispersibility of the sintering additive. The conventional AlN sintering additive used yttria ($Y_2O_3$), but the dispersibility of the powder in the mixing process was important. In this study, we investigated the mechanical and thermal conductivity of yttrium nitrate ($Y(NO_3)_3{\cdot}6H_2O$), as a sintering additive in order to improve the dispersibility of $Y_2O_3$. The sintering additives content was in the range of 2 to 4.5wt.%. The density of AlN gradually increased with increasing contents of sintering additive and the flexural strength gradually increased as well. The flexural strength of the sintered body containing 4 wt% of $Y_2O_3$ and $Y(NO_3)_3{\cdot}6H_2O$ was 334.1 MPa and 378.2 MPa, respectively. The thermal conductivities were 189.7W/mK and 209.4W/mK, respectively. In the case of hardness, there was only a slight difference and the average value was about 10 GPa. Therefore, densification, density and strength values were found to be proportional to its content. It was confirmed that AlN using $Y(NO_3)_3{\cdot}6H_2O$ displayed relatively higher thermal conductivity and mechanical properties than the $Y_2O_3$.

  • The effect of kind of starting materials used for a sintering additive. magnesium acetate and magnesium nitrate, on the mechanical properties of alumina sintered body made by adding 1000 ppm of the additives, respectively, was investigated. As for the alumina sintered bodies prepared from magnesium acetate and magnesium nitrate, we observed that their relative densities decreased rapidly with increasing sintering temperature 1$600^{\circ}C$. Outer layer of alumina bodies had a duplex microstructure consisting of pores and grain growth. Also the inner layer had a second phase between alumina grain boundaries. By EPMA analysis, we confirmed that the grain boundary phase was a compound containing Mg.

Synthesis and Characterization of W Composite Powder with La2O3-Y2O3 Nano-dispersoids by Ultrasonic Spray Pyrolysis

  • An optimum route to synthesis the W-based composite powders with homogeneous dispersion of oxide nanoparticles was investigated. The La2O3 dispersed W powder was synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis using ammonium metatungstate hydrate and lanthanum nitrate. The dispersion of Y2O3 nanoparticles in W- La2O3 powder was carried out by a polymer addition solution method using yttrium nitrate. XPS and TEM analyses for the composite powder showed that the nano-sized La2O3 and Y2O3 particles were well distributed in W powder. This study suggests that the combination processing of ultrasonic spray pyrolysis and polymeric additive solution is a promising way to synthesis W-based composite powders.

  • Mullite/zirconia composite was synthesized by adding zirconia and Zircon to mixture of Hapcheon kaolin(grade pink A) and aluminium nitrate salt in order to enhance strength of the mullite specimens. Kaolin and aluminium nitrate salt was mixed milled and calcined at 100$0^{\circ}C$ and then 5wt% mullite seed was added to increase mullite content. The influence of the additives(ZrO2 and ZrSiO4) and sintering temperature on the strength of the sintered specimens was investigated. The flexural strength of the specimens containing 10wt% zirconia was enhanced from 150MPa without the additive up to 300MPa after heat treatment at 156$0^{\circ}C$ In the case of addition of 15wt% zircon the strength of the specimens systhesized at 1$600^{\circ}C$ was 225 MPa.

Analysis of Nitrate Contents of Korean Common Foods (상용식품 중의 질산염 함량 분석)

  • Nitrate a common component of man's chemical environment, is present in foods either naturally or in an additive introduced during processing of foods. Nitrate level of foods have been found depending on nitrosation of soils and other various environmental factors. Therefore data on nitrate contents of foods reported in other countries can not be adapted to Korean foods. Also data on nitrate levels of Korean foods available were reported 10 years ago, which would be assumed to differ from those of foods currently consuming by Koreans. The present study was attempted to determine nitrate contEnts of common foods. Based on National Nutrition Survey Report 143 food items out of 14 food groups were selected for this study Nitrate levels of common foods used in the study were from N.D (not detected) to 6733.33 mg/kg foods. Mean nitrate levels of food groups 27.2 mg/kg of cereal and grain products, 78.1 mg/kg in potatoes and potato products, 8.3 mg/kg in legumes and their products N.D of seeds and nuts, 1012.1 mg/kg of vegetables and their products,76.3 mg/kg fungi and mushrooms 42.2 mg/kg fruits,34.5 mg/kg of meat, poultry and their products,0 mg/kg in eggs, 23.9 mg/kg in fish, shellfishes and their products,23.0 mg/kg in seaweeds, 7.7 mg/kg milk and dairy products, 26.3 mg/kg in seasonings, 68.0 mg/kg in others.
