  • The autothermal reforming reaction of methane was investigated to produce hyd rogen with Ni/$CeO_2-ZrO_2$, Ni/$Al_2O_3$-MgO and Ni-Ru/$Al_2O_3$-MgO catalysts. Honeycomb metalli c monolith was applied in order to obtain high catalytic activity and stability in autothermal r eforming. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET and SEM. The influence of various catalysts on hydrogen production was studied for the feed ratio($O_2/CH_4$, $H_2O/CH_4$). The $O_2/CH_4$ and $H_2O/CH_4$ ratio governed the methane conversion and temperature profile of reactor. Th e reactor temperature increased as the reaction shifted from endothermic to exothermic reactio n with increasing $O_2/CH_4$ ratio. Among the catalysts used in the experiment, the Ni-Ru/$Al_2O_3$-MgO catalyst showed the highest activity. The 60% of $CH_4$ conversion was obtained, and th e reactor temperature was maintained $600^{\circ}C$ at the condition of GHSV=$10000h^{-1}$ and feed ratio S/C/O=0.5/1/0.5.

  • Steam reforming of LPG was investigated over spc-Ni/MgAl catalyst in a temperature range of $600{\sim}850^{\circ}C$, feed molar ratio of $H_2O/C=1.0{\sim}3.0$, space velocity of $10,000{\sim}90,000h^{-1}$ and at atmospheric pressure. spc-Ni/MgAl catalyst was prepared by a co-precipitation method, whereas Ni/MgO and $Ni/Al_2O_3$ catalysts were prepared by an incipient wetness method. The characteristics of catalysts were analyzed by N2 Physisorption, CO chemisorption, XRD, TOF-SIMS, SEM and TEM techniques. The Ni/MgO and $Ni/Al_2O_3$ catalysts were deactivated by the formation of carbon. However, the spc-Ni/MgAl catalyst showed higher conversion and $H_2$ selectivity than the other catalysts, even though carbon was formed on the surface of the catalyst during the reaction under the tested reaction conditions.

  • NiO and Co3O4-doped porous La(CoNi)O3 perovskite oxides were prepared from excess Ni addition by a hydrothermal method using porous silica template, and characterized as bifunctional catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for Zn-air rechargeable batteries in alkaline solution. Excess Ni induced to form NiO and Co3O4 in La(CoNi)O3 particles. The NiO and Co3O4-doped porous La(CoNi)O3 showed high specific surface area, up to nine times of conventionally synthesized perovskite oxide, and abundant pore volume with similar structure. Extra added Ni was partially substituted for Co as B site of ABO3 perovskite structure and formed to NiO and Co3O4 which was highly dispersed in particles. Excess Ni in La(CoNi)O3 catalysts increased OER performance (259 mA/㎠ at 2.4 V) in alkaline solution, although the activities (211 mA/㎠ at 0.5 V) for ORR were not changed with the content of excess Ni. La(CoNi)O3 with excess Ni showed very stable cyclability and low capacity fading rate (0.38 & 0.07 ㎶/hour for ORR & OER) until 300 hours (~70 cycles) but more excess content of Ni in La(CoNi)O3 gave negative effect to cyclability.

  • Fabrication of heterogeneous catalysts using Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) has recently been attracting attention of surface chemists and physicists. In this talk, I will present recent results about structures and chemical activities of various catalysts prepared by ALD, particularly focusing on Ni-based catalysts. Ni has been considered as potential catalysts for $CO_2$ reforming of methane (CRM); however, Ni often undergoes rapid decrease in catalytic activity with time, and therefore, application of Ni as catalysts for CRM has been regarded as difficult so far. Deactivation of Ni catalysts during CRM reaction is from either coke formation on Ni surface or sintering of Ni particles during reaction. Two different strategies have been used for enhancing stability of Ni-based catalysts; $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were deposited on micrometer-size Ni particles by ALD, which turned out to reduce coke formation on Ni surfaces. Ni nanoparticles deposited by ALD on mesoporous silica showed high activity and long-term stability from CRM without coke deposition and sintering during CRM reaction. Ni-based catalysts have been also used for oxidation of toluene, which is one of the most notorious gases responsible for sick-building syndrome. It was shown that onset-temperature of Ni catalysts for toluene oxidation is as low as $120^{\circ}C$. At $250\circ}C$, total oxidation of toluene to $CO_2$ with a 100% conversion was found.

  • Catalytic oxidation of benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) using regenerated metal oxide catalysts (ZnO-CuO, NiO, $Fe_2O_3$, ZnO, CrO) were investigated in a fixed bed flow reactor to evaluate their feasibility for the purpose of removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Four kinds of pre-treatment methods such as gas (air and hydrogen), acid aqueous solution, alkali aqueous solution and cleaning agent were used to find out the optimal regeneration conditions. The physico-chemical properties of the used and regenerated catalysts were characterized by BET and TPR (Temperature Programmed Reduction). The used catalysts showed high conversion ratio and the catalytic ability of toluene oxidation was in the order of ZnO-CuO>$Fe_2O_3$>NiO>ZnO>CrO. We found that the acid aqueous pre-treatment (0.1 N HNO$_3$) was the best way to enhance the catalytic activity of $Fe_2O_3$. In addition, air and hydrogen gas treatment were optimal for NiO and ZnO-CuO catalysts, respectively. Furthermore, the decomposition of BTX depends on the type of a catalyst and a gas molecule.

  • Hydrodesulfurization of thiophene was studied over $Ni-W/TiO_2-ZrO_2$ catalysts in a fixed bed flow reactor. The ranges of experimental conditions were at the temperatures between 200$^\circ$C and 360$^\circ$C, the pressures between 20 X $10^5$ Pa. The catalysts were reduced with the flow of 10 L/hr of $H_2$ at the temperature of 350$^\circ$C. It was found that $TiO_2-ZrO_2$ supported catalysts had similar activity to $\gamma-Al_2O_3$ supported. The largest surface areas and the highest acidity occured as the binary oxides were mixed with equal molar ratios. The HDS increased with increasing temperatures, pressures and contact times.

  • Catalysts were prepared by using incipient wetness impregnation method with 17 wt% Ni on a support ($SiO_2-Y_2O_3$, $Al_2O_3$, $SiO_2-ZrO_2$, $SiO_2$, $TiO_2$, MgO) and the catalytic activity in the reductive amination of ethanol with ammonia in the presence of hydrogen was compared and evaluated. The catalysts used before and after the reaction were characterized using X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, ethanol-temperature programmed desorption (EtOH-TPD), isopropanol-temperature programmed desorption (IPA-TPD), and hydrogen chemisorption etc. In the case of preparing $ZrO_2$ and $Y_2O_3$ supports, the small amount of Si dissolution from the Pyrex reactor surface provoked the formation of mixed oxides $SiO_2-ZrO_2$ and $SiO_2-Y_2O_3$. Among the catalysts used, $Ni/SiO_2-Y_2O_3$ catalyst showed the best activity, and this good activity was closely related to the highest nickel dispersion, and low desorption temperature in EtOH-TPD and IPA-TPD. The low catalytic activity on Ni/MgO catalysts showed low activity due to the formation of NiO-MgO solid-solutions. In the case of $Ni/TiO_2$, the reactivity was low due to the low nickel metal phase due to strong metal-support interaction. In the case of using a support as $SiO_2-Y_2O_3$, $Al_2O_3$, $SiO_2-ZrO_2$, and $SiO_2$, the selectivities of ethylamines and acetonitrile were not significantly different at similar ethanol conversion.

  • In this study, synthesized Ni/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts were coated on the surface of honeycomb metalic monoliths to investigate catalytic activity in steam reforming of methane reactions. Supports with varying Ce/Zr ratios were synthesized to observe their behavior in the reforming reaction, and catalysts with Ni contents ranging from 5 wt% to 20 wt% were prepared to analyze the effect of Ni loading contents on catalytic activity. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, TPR, and SEM. The TPR analysis indicated the formation of Ni-Ce-Zr oxide with a strong interaction between the active metal Ni and CeO2-ZrO2 support. The 15 wt% Ni/Ce0.80Zr0.20O2 catalyst exhibited the highest activity and stability in the steam reforming of methane reaction. Catalysts with enhanced activity and stability were synthesized by manufacturing composite materials using excellent oxygen storage and donor properties of CeO2 and the thermal properties of ZrO2.

  • The promotion effects of noble metals upon the activity and reducibility in steam methane reforming over $Ni/MgAl_2O_4$ catalysts were investigated. While $Ni/MgAl_2O_4$ catalysts require the pre-reduction by $H_2$, the noble metal-added catalysts show high catalytic activities without pre-treatment. According to $CH_4$-TPR, the addition of noble metal makes the $Ni/MgAl_2O_4$ catalyst easily reducible. The reduction degree of NiO in the noble metal-added catalysts after using at $650^{\circ}C$ without pre-reduction was $15{\sim}20%$, and was lower than that in the $H_2$-reduced $Ni/MgAl_2O_4$ catalyst(reduction degree=27%). The enhancement of the catalytic activity over noble metal-added catalysts results from easier reducibility by addition of noble metal and the synergy effect between noble metal and Ni.
