  • 본연구는 독성물질을 함유한 납축전지와 NiCd전지를 대체할 수 있는 NiMH전지를 이용하여 철도시스템 비상전원용으로 사용위해 80Ah 전지를 병렬로 연결하여 160Ah의 NiMH전지 제작하였다. 160Ah 전지에 적합한 전극을 개발하기 위하여 3성분계의 전해질의 고율방전에 대해 평가하였다. 160Ah급 전지는 철도시스템 비상전원용으로 사용하기 위한 여러 가지 실험을 하여 평가를 하였다.

  • 본 연구에서 세계 환경오염 지정유해물질을 함유한 납축전지와 니켈 카드뮴(Ni-Cd) 축전지를 대체할 수 있는 대용량 니켈 금속수소(Ni-MH) 축전지를 이용하여, 디젤발전기 시동을 걸기위해 80Ah 전지를 병렬로 연결하여 160Ah의 Ni-MH 축전지를 제작하였다. 160Ah 전지에 적합한 전극을 개발하기 위하여 3성분계의 전해질 조성이 요구되었으며, 그 후, 고율방전을 평가하였다. 음극 성능의 개선을 위하여, Zn을 첨가하였다. 160Ah급 축전지로 디젤발전기의 시동을 위한 다양한 실험을 통하여 평가를 하였으며, 최종적으로 디젤발전기의 시동이 가능함을 확인하였다.

SOC Estimation Based on OCV for NiMH Batteries Using an Improved Takacs Model

  • This paper presents a new method for the estimation of State of Charge (SOC) for NiMH batteries. Among the conventional methods to estimate SOC, Coulomb Counting is widely used, but this method is not precise due to error integration. Another method that has been proposed to estimate SOC is by using a measurement of the Open Circuit Voltage (OCV). This method is found to be a precise one for SOC estimation. In NiMH batteries, the hysteresis characteristic of OCV is very strong compared to other type of batteries. Another characteristic of NiMH battery to be considered is that the OCV of a NiMH battery under discharging mode is lower than it is under charging mode. In this paper, the OCV is modeled by a simple method based on a hyperbolic function which well known as Takacs’s model. The OCV model is then used for SOC estimation. Although the model is simple, the error is within 10%.

  • Extensive work has been done on investigating the inner cell pressure characteristics of sealed type Ni-MH battery in which Zr-Ti-Mn-V-Ni alloy is used as anode. The inner cell pressure of this type Ni-MH battery much more increases with the charge/discharge cycling than that of the other type Ni-MH battery where commercialized $AB_5$ type alloy is used as anode. The increase of inner cell pressure in the sealed type Ni/MH battery using Zr-Ti-Mn-V-Ni alloy system is mainly due to the accumulation of oxygen gas during charge/discharge cycling. The accumulation of oxygen gas arises mainly due to the low rate of oxygen recombination on the MH electrode surface during charge/discharge cycling. The difference of oxygen recombination rate between $AB_5$ type electrode and Zr-Ti-Mn-V-Ni electrode is caused by the difference of electrode reaction surface area resulting from different particle size after their activation and the difference of surface catalytic activity for oxygen recombination reaction, respectively. After EIS analysis, it is identified that the surface catalytic activity affects much more dominantly on the oxygen recombination reaction than the reaction surface area does. In order to suppress the inner cell pressure of Ni-MH battery where Zr-Ti-Mn-V-Ni is used as anode, it is suggested that the surface catalytic activity for oxygen recombination should be improved.

Ni-MH 2차 전지의 저온특성에 미치는 전해액의 영향 (Influences of Various Electrolytes on the Low-Temperature Characteristics of Ni-MH Secondary Battery)

  • The Ni-MH batteries for HEV and industry are normally placed in outdoor, consequently causing an too weak discharge power problem due to a cold weather specially in winter time. In order to improve the low temperature performances of the Ni-MH battery for HEV and industrial uses, it has been investigated the low temperature discharge characteristics of Ni-MH battery with various electrolytes at $-18^{\circ}C$. The summary of experimental results are as follows. The low temperature characteristics depended strongly on the characteristics of electrolytes. When the concentration of the electrolytes were too high or too low the low temperature performance was poor. The best electrolyte was composed of KOH 6.2M+LiOH 1.2M. An addition of RbOH or CsOH to electrolyte improved the low temperature performance. The best total concentration of electrolyte composed of KOH, NaOH and LiOH was about 7M.

  • Equalizing the state of charge of cell that affects the charge/discharge quality and efficiency of the battery through the charge/discharge characteristic experiments of battery source, we develope the high efficiency charge/discharge system which would be used in serial HEV with the constant engine-generator output. For this, establishes the electrical model of Ni-MH battery appropriate to the high efficiency charge/discharge conditions. There is no model of Ni-MH cell, so we used Ni-Cd model and obtain the Ni-MH model through the experiment. A reason that each cell has the same charge/discharge property for applying the cell model to serial/parallel connected battery source extensively is needed. Therefore, in this paper, propose the Ni-MH charger/discharger has the equalization charging function and selectable cut-off function.

  • Ni/MH전지에서 Cu 도금이 MH(metal hydride)음극의 전극 특성에 미치는 영향을 실험적으로 조사하였다. $LaNi_5$와 Cu도금된 $LaNi_5$를 활물질로 사용하여 냉간압착법과 페이스트법의 혼용법으로 전극을 제조하였다. 그 결과 소량의 CMC(carboxymethylcellulose sodium salt)를 첨가하고 열처리를 행하지 않은 전극이 높은 방전용량을 보였다. $LaNi_5$보다는 Cu 도금된 $LaNi_5$를 활물질로 사용하여 제조한 전극의 방전용량이 증가하였으며, 이는 $LaNi_5$표면에 도금된 구리에 의해 전극의 전자 전도도가 증가되었기 때문이며 도금된 구리의 양이 증가할 수록 그 효과는 현저하였다. 또한 전극의 방전용량은 산성 무전해도금의 경우가 알칼리성 무전해도금을 행한 전극보다 우수한 용량을 나타내었다. Al이 첨가된 $LaNi_{4.5}Al_{0.5}$ 전극이 $LaNi_5$전극보다 우수한 방전용량을 보였다. 구리 도금이 $LaNi_5$의 피독특성에 미치는 영향을 CO기체의 피독실험으로 조사하였다.

  • The sealed nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) secondary battery are primarily used as energy storage for the HEV. But, the research on Ni-MH battery has focused on anode materials. In the present study, we investigate to improve the electrochemical characteristics of Ni-MH batteries using the surface treatment of $Ni(OH)_2$ cathode by CoOOH. Surface treated $Ni(OH)_2$ cathode showed significant improvement in the activation behavior, rate capability, charge retention, and cycle life of the batteries were significantly improved. In addition, the surface treated electrode exhibited the higher overvoltage for oxygen evolution than the untreated electrode. This phenomenon indicates that the charge efficiency can be improved by suppressing the oxygen evolution on cathode.
