  • Hemodynamics behavior of the blood flow is influenced by the presence of the arterial stenosis. If stenosis is present in an artery, normal blood flow is disturbed. In the present study, characteristics of steady and pulsatile flow of non-Newtonian fluid, the effects of stenosised geometry are analyzed by numerical simulation. One interesting point is that non-symmetric solutions were obtained at severity stenosis, although the stenosis and the boundary condition were all axisymmetric.

  • It is obtained that a localization of the vorticity direction coherence conditions for the regularity of the 3D shear thickening fluids to an arbitrarily small space-time cylinder. It implies the regularity of any geometrically constrained weak solution of the system considered independently of the type of the spatial domain or the boundary conditions.

  • The two major problems related to the blood flow in a floating type polymer valve are thrombus formation and hemolysis. It is well known that the shear stress in the fluid and flow separation around the valve are blamed for such disastrous phenomena. In this viewpoint, through study of the flow field around the valve is imperative to improve design of the valve. The aim of this study is to investigate the fluid flow around a floating type polymer valve. The numerical method employed in this study is the finite element software called ADINA. Incompressible viscous flow is assumed for blood using the assumption of Newtonian fluid. In this study, two prominent features of the axisymmetric flow around the floating type polymer valve are observed: jet-like flows observed near the gap between the conduit and the valve, and recirculating flow downstream of the valve. We also provided a detailed description of shear stress field according to the variation of flow conditions. The shear stress in fluid has its maximum value near the gap between the valve and the conduit.

  • We present a short review for authors' previous work on direct numerical simulations for inertialess hard particle suspensions formulated either with a Newtonian fluid or with viscoelastic polymeric fluids to understand the microstructural evolution and the bulk material behavior. We employ two well-defined bi-periodic domain concepts such that a single cell problem with a small number of particles may represent a large number of repeated structures: one is the sliding bi-periodic frame for simple shear flow and the other is the extensional bi-periodic frame for planar elongational flow. For implicit treatment of hydrodynamic interaction between particle and fluid, we use the finite-element/fictitious-domain method similar to the distributed Lagrangian multiplier (DLM) method together with the rigid ring description. The bi-periodic boundary conditions can be effectively incorportated as constraint equations and implemented by Lagrangian multipliers. The bulk stress can be evaluated by simple boundary integrals of stresslets on the particle boundary in such formulations. Some 2-D example results are presented to show effects of the solid fraction and the particle configuration on the shear and elongational viscosity along with the micro-structural evolution for both particles and fluid. Effects of the fluid elasticity has been also presented.

  • The maximum spreading is the maximum extent to which a drop can spread after impacting on a surface. It is one of the crucial factors determining the spraying performance in many applications. In this study, the existing maximum spreading models for a Newtonian liquid droplet impacting on a dry solid surface were reviewed and compared with the experimental results over the ranges of $4{\leq}Re{\leq}11700$, $23{\leq}We{\leq}786$, and $37.9^{\circ}{\leq}{\theta}_s{\leq}107.1^{\circ}$. The surface wettability was found to have only a minor influence on the maximum spreading, compared to the liquid viscosity and impact velocity. Among the models tested, the Roisman (2009) model showed the best agreement with the experimental results, matching 80% of the measured data within ${\pm}5%$.

  • Three-dimensional numerical simulation of isothermal/nonisothermal coextrusion process of two immiscible polymers through a rectangular channel has been done using the finite element method. The encapsulation phenomenon with the less viscous layer encapsulating the more viscous layer was investigated with the generalized Newtonian fluids. The interface position around the symmetric plane obtained by numerical simulation nearly coincided with the one observed in experiments, but the degree of encapsulation was less than the one observed experimentally. Open boundary condition method was found to be applied to the simulation of nonisothermal coextrusion process, however, the results are not far from those using the fully developed boundary condition, because the temperature development along the downstream direction is very slow in the case of convection dominated flow. When the inlet velocity is increased, the interface profile does not change in isothermal flow, while it moves upward in nonisothermal situation. The degree of encapsulation decreases along the downstream direction in nonisothermal flow. When the inlet temperature increases compared to the wall temperature, the outlet interface moves downward and the degree of encapsulation increases. The difference of degree of encapsulation between the simulation and the experiments seems to arise from the viscoelastic effect of the materials. It was concluded that the nonisothermal effect alone does not explain the complex coextrusion process and the viscoelastic effect needs to be considered.

  • Because most existing non-Newtonian models are not suitable for application to the lattice Boltzmann method, theoretical and numerical studies in this regard remain challenging. In this study, the hydrokinetic (HK) model was modified and applied to a 3D sudden contraction-expansion channel flow, and the characteristics of the HK model flow were evaluated to generate non-trivial predictions in three-dimensional strong shear flows. The HK model is very efficient for application to the lattice Boltzmann method because it utilizes the shear rate and relaxation time. However, the simulation would be unstable in a high shear flow field because the local relaxation time sharply decreases with an increase in the shear rate in a strong shear flow field. In the HK model, it may become necessary to truncate the relaxation time and non-dimensional parameter to obtain stable numerical results.

  • Flow pattern of air-water two phase flow depends on the conditions of pressure drop, void fraction, and channel geometry. Drag reduction in the two phase flow can be applied to the transport of crude oil, phase change systems such as chemical reactor, pool and boiling flow, and to present cavitation which occurs in pump impellers. But the research on drag reduction in two phase flow is not intensively investigated. Therefore, experimental investigations have been carried out to analyze the drag reduction produced and void fraction by Co-polymer(A611p) addition in the two phase flow system. We find that the maximum point position of local void friction moves from the wall of the pipe to the center of the pipe when polymer concentration increases. Also we find that the polymer solution changes the characteristics of the two phase flow. And then we predict that it is closely related with the drag reduction.

  • This experimental study concerns the characteristics of a transitional flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one rotating. The pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of $0.1\sim0.4%$ aqueous solution of sodium carbomethyl cellulose (CMC), respectively at inner cylinder rotational speed of $0\sim600rpm$. The transitional flow has been examined by the measurement of pressure losses to reveal the relation of the Reynolds and Rossby numbers with the skin-friction coefficients. The present results show that the skin-friction coefficients have the significant relation with the Rossby numbers, only for laminar regime. The occurrence of transition has been checked by the gradient changes of pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients with respect to the Reynolds numbers. The increasing rate of skin-friction coefficients due to the rotation in uniform for laminar flow regime, whereas it is suddenly reduced for transitional flow regime and, then, is gradually declined for turbulent flow regime. Consequently, the critical(axial-flow) Reynolds number decrease as the rotational speed increases. Thus, the rotation of inner cylinder promotes the early occurrence of transition due to the onset of taylor vortices.
