  • This study examines how the watchdog concert in journalism field has been created and develope4 Related studies found that the watchdog is related not so muck with free press theory as with a privilege awarded to the press because the press serves for the public interests. It was found that in the U.S., the watchdog concept was derived from the a lot of libel cases in the late 1890s. At the time, the newspaper owners and editors continuously claimed the very protection over vulnerability of newspaper's collecting, reporting, and printing news. While, in Korea, the concept of watchdog emerged in the late 1990s after the establishment of the Constitution Court. Even though the watchdog concert was accepted very late by the Korean courts, it is believed to be a kind of special privilege to prevent the press from being recklessly regulated in libel cases. Rather, the Korean courts expand the extent of the role of the press as a watchdog by deciding that not only the public officials and politicians but also other socially influential public figures could be included in the criticism from the press. However, how these court decisions can be practically implemented depends upon how the court apply the probability of the press to believe the news true and intention of malice in writing and publishing the stories.

  • This study utilized a semantic network analysis for Korean major newspaper articles concerning 'Bernie Sanders'. 'Bernie Sanders' promotes conservative values of 'Americana' as well as the progressive values of 'relieving inequality', and thus, perhaps he is a subject on which ideological differences between the press can be distinctively manifest. Upon comparison of the priority of frequency between the conservative press and progressive press, the conservative press frequently used the expressions, 'socialist' and 'black man', whereas the progressive press frequently used the expressions, 'inequality' and 'problem'. Both the conservative press and progressive press displayed particularly different semantic compositions with the term, 'Korea'. The progressive press aimed to express the criticism of social problems and established politics identified by Sanders in relation to the 'Korean' society, whereas the conservative press criticized the blunt expressions stating that a specifically named politician resembles Sanders, and the specific party and term of 'Korea'. A completely different disposition of reports from different perspectives and context was ascertained, regardless of the use of the same terms. Thus, it is demonstrated that the semantic composition of the press on a specific issue displays significant differences according to their ideological disposition.

  • What is an appropriate length of an article in the mobile era producing new tastes of contents combining computing and mobile communication? Is it still valid to have a lengthy article as high level journalism even in the mobile era? Is there any possibility to have a short article combination to give us readability and the amount of information? This study aims to find some answers to these questions. The length of articles were controlled with a field experiment; from an article of 346 syllables(including spaces between syllables) which does not need finger scrolling on a mobile phone to articles of 633, 1033, 1368 syllables(including spaces between syllables) which frequently appear in newspapers and broadcasting news program. All the main themes were same for 4 articles which have different length. Three hundred and eighty four students viewed one of the 4 articles through mobile phone or newspaper. Each participant checked their preference and evaluated quality on the article, were asked to recall contents of the article. In newspaper group, articles with 346 or 1033 syllables were highly evaluated. Mobile group seemed to prefer articles of 346 or 633 syllables. In conclusion, we need to consider various strategies shortening the length of an article into 346 or 633 syllables as a basic format to meet the neEds of mobile era.

  • In covering the controversies surrounding the so-called cyber defamation laws, the Korean press offered competitive frames in terms of values (security vs. freedom of speech) and attributional patterns (episodic vs. thematic attribution). By attending to core values and attributional patterns as two essential components of news frames, this study explored the cognitive and affective processes of value and attributional framing and their effects on issue opinion. According to a 3-group online experiment, first, it was found that core values increased the perceived importance of relevant beliefs, which further affected individuals' attitudes toward the laws. The affective effects of core values were also found marginally significant. The value of security increased the intensity of anger toward deviant netizens (so-called defamatory repliers), and it further increased individuals' support for the laws. It was not substantiated, however, that individualistic attribution, than social attribution, would provoke stronger anger toward defamatory repliers. Instead, episodic frames appeared to be more effective in driving issue opinion as indicated by the value frame.

  • This paper aims to plan a new research program on the parallel relationship between Korean press and political power, by providing concepts on the mode of existence of professional journalists in Korea. In the midst of the economic crisis of Korean journalism, relative deteriorisation in the political democracy and the liberty of press, and changes in news ecosystem due to the revolution of digital news, the status of professional journalists is at stake. In these circumstances, this paper argues that many existing researches on journalistic professionalism need to be reconstructed in the perspective of professional project. It enables, first of all, an evaluation on actual issues of professional journalists from the actor perspective, i.e. economic interests, social closure, regulative bargain with the authority. Secondly, concerning decoupling phenomenon of journalism and democracy which became salient in the contemporary society, this study raises a necessity to create new logical relations around concepts of journalist professionalism. And we will find, in this situation, a beginning of new evaluation on the mode of existence of professional journalists, that has been possibly developped within the old, assymetric relationship between State-press. And finally, this study proposes to consider a category of professional journalists as a vehicle that helps to conceptualize the old, parallel relationship between Korean press and political power.

  • In order to prevent cervical cancer, free vaccination against cervical cancer(HPV vaccine) for 12-year-old girls has been ongoing since June 2016. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the media reported the risk information of HPV vaccine side effects and to suggest implications for government's risk communication and policy PR. The time frame was divided into two stages, stage 1(policy formation stage, 6 months before the start of free HPV vaccination) and stage 2(policy execution stage, 6 months after the free HPV vaccination was implemented). A total of 314 news articles on HPV vaccine safety and HPV Vaccine side effects were analyzed by content analysis and network analysis. The number of articles increased at stage 2 and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasized the safety of HPV vaccine and encouraged the inoculation while highlighting the effectiveness of the vaccine. Regarding HPV vaccine side effects, cases against vaccination in Japan were mainly reported at stage 1, whereas cases of HPV vaccine side effects from other countries such as Europe and USA were frequently reported at stage 2. In order to increase vaccination rate of HPV vaccine, it is time to take a strategic approach to prevent vague fear or anxiety about the vaccine.

  • As the volume of unstructured data increases through various social media, Internet news articles, and blogs, the importance of text analysis and the studies are increasing. Since text analysis is mostly performed on a specific domain or topic, the importance of constructing and applying a domain-specific dictionary has been increased. The quality of dictionary has a direct impact on the results of the unstructured data analysis and it is much more important since it present a perspective of analysis. In the literature, most studies on text analysis has emphasized the importance of dictionaries to acquire clean and high quality results. However, unfortunately, a rigorous verification of the effects of dictionaries has not been studied, even if it is already known as the most essential factor of text analysis. In this paper, we generate three dictionaries in various ways from 39,800 news articles and analyze and verify the effect each dictionary on the accuracy of document classification by defining the concept of Intrinsic Rate. 1) A batch construction method which is building a dictionary based on the frequency of terms in the entire documents 2) A method of extracting the terms by category and integrating the terms 3) A method of extracting the features according to each category and integrating them. We compared accuracy of three artificial neural network-based document classifiers to evaluate the quality of dictionaries. As a result of the experiment, the accuracy tend to increase when the "Intrinsic Rate" is high and we found the possibility to improve accuracy of document classification by increasing the intrinsic rate of the dictionary.
