  • A new nonlinear near-wall turbulence model is developed to predict turbulent flow and heat transfer in strongly nonequilibrium flows. The k-$\varepsilon$-f$\sub$${\mu}$/, model of Park and Sung$\^$(1)/ is extended to a nonlinear formulation. The stress-strain relationship is the thrid-order in the mean velocity gradients. The strain dependent coefficients are obatined from the realizability constraints and the singular behavior at large strains. An improved explicit heat flux model is proposed with the aid of Cayley-Hamilton theorem. This new model includes the quadratic effects of flow deformations. The near-wall asymptotic behavior is incorporated by modifying the f$\sub$λ/ function. The model performance is shown to be satisfactory.

  • New insights are presented in simplified modeling and analysis of free vibrations of piezoelectric - based smart structures and systems. These consist, first, in extending the wide used piezoelectric-thermal analogy (TA) simplified modeling approach in currently static actuation to piezoelectric free-vibrations under short-circuit (SC) and approximate open-circuit (OC) electric conditions; second, the popular piezoelectric strain induced - potential (IP) simplified modeling concept is revisited. It is shown that the IP resulting frequencies are insensitive to the electric SC/OC conditions; in particular, SC frequencies are found to be the same as those resulting from the newly proposed OC TA. Two-dimensional plane strain (PStrain) and plane stress (PStress) free-vibrations problems are then analyzed for above used SC and approximate OC electric conditions. It is shown theoretically and validated numerically that, for both SC and OC electric conditions, PStress frequencies are lower than PStrain ones, and that 3D frequencies are bounded from below by the former and from above by the latter. The same holds for the modal electro-mechanical coupling coefficient that is retained as a comparator of presented models and analyses.

  • Elizabethkingia miricola BM10, a symbiotic bacterium, has been isolated from the hindgut of Reticulitermes speratus KMT001, a termite which occurs on Bukhan Mountain in Seoul, Korea. This strain demonstrated a symbiotic characteristic, in that it lacked endo-${\beta}$-1,4-glucanase activity, in a previous study. The major fatty acids of E. miricola BM10 were iso-$C_{15:0}$, iso-$C_{17:0}$ 3-OH, and summed feature 3 (iso-$C_{16:1}{\omega}7c/C_{16:1}{\omega}6c$). The content of iso-$C_{17:0}$ 3-OH was higher, while those of ECL 13.566, iso-$C_{17:11}{\omega}9c$, and summed feature 4 were lower than the other three type-strains of the Elizabethkingia genus. The 16S rRNA phylogenetic analysis confirmed that E. miricola BM10 is a new species. The whole genome of E. miricola BM10 was sequenced. The average nucleotide identity of strain BM10 as evaluated by pairwise comparison with E. anophelis R26, E. meningoseptica ATCC 13253, and E. miricola GTC 862 was shown to be 91.5%, 81.2%, and 94.29%, respectively. Based on our study results, E. miricola BM10 appears to represent a new strain of the genus Elizabethkingia.

  • The blooms caused by Fibrocapsa japonica have occurred regularly in New Zea1andean coastal waters, and no fish kills and economic impacts have been reported. However, Fibrocapsa japonica in Japan killed caged juvenile fish and has been regarded as a harmful micro algae. In this comparative study a New Zealand isolate was found to be morphologically similar to a Japanese isolate, although slightly larger on average than. Optimal temperatures for growth differed, with fastest growth rates occurring at $22-24^{\circ}C$ for the New Zealand strain and $16-22^{\circ}C$ for the Japanese strain, with a decrease in growth rate exhibited by the latter at $25^{\circ}C$. Both isolates had low salinity optima of 20-25 PSU, although they grew between 15 and 30 PSU. Growth declined significantly for both strains above 30 PSU.

  • Purpose: Recently, the government of China has established new safety regulations for towing devices. The new Chinese regulation has more unfavorable conditions than the conditions of other countries. So the various measures have been reviewed to satisfy this regulation. Methods: The regulation conditions were compared through analysis of strain energy, and a method for improving the accuracy of analysis is suggested. In addition, the test method considering the tolerance is presented through tolerance analysis. This paper also explained importance of confirming the quality of products through a case of poor quality of Chinese products such as poor heat treatment. Result: We could know how strong Chinese regulations are stronger than other national laws and investigated which member receives a lot of strain energy. In order to cope with these Chinese regulations, we suggested improvement of analysis accuracy, test method through tolerance analysis, and heat treatment quality. Conclusion: This paper contributed to general counterplan of the strengthened new Chinese regulations for towing device.

  • A new method of evaluating critical damage values of commercial materials is presented in this paper. The method is based on the previous study of the methodology [1] of acquisition of true stress-strain curves or flow stress curves over large strain from the tensile test in which the flow stress is described by the Hollomon law-like form, that is, by the strain dependent strength coefficient and the strain hardening exponent. The strain hardening exponent is calculated from the true strain at the necking point to meet the Considere condition. The strength coefficient is assumed to be constant before necking and represented by a piecewise linear function of strain after necking. With the predicted flow stress, a tensile test is simulated by a rigid-plastic finite element method with higher accuracy of less than 0.5% error between experiments and predictions. The instant when the fracture begins and thus the critical damage is obtained is determined by observing the stress variation at the necked region. It is assumed that the fracture due to damage begins when the pattern of stress around the necked region changes radically. The method is applied to evaluate the critical damage of a low carbon steel.

  • Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) has recently been applied as an alternative to conventional concrete in construction due to its extremely high compressive and tensile strength, and enhanced durability. However, up to date, there has been insufficient information regarding the confinement behavior of UHPC columns. Therefore, this study aims to perform an assessment of axial stress-strain model for UHPC confined by circular steel tube stub columns. The equations for calculating the confined peak stress and its corresponding strain of confined concrete in existing models suggested by Johansson (2002), Sakino et al. (2004), Han et al. (2005), Hatzigeorgiou (2008) were modified based on the regression analysis of test results in Schneider (2006) in order to increase the prediction accuracy for the case of confined UHPC. Furthermore, a new axial stress-strain model for confined UHPC was developed. To examine the suitability of the modified models and the proposed model for confined UHPC, axial stress-strain curves derived from the proposed models were compared with those obtained from previous test results. After validating the proposed model, an extensive parametric study was undertaken to investigate the effects of diameter-to-thickness ratio, steel yield strength and concrete compressive strength on the complete axial stress-strain curves, the strength and strain enhancement of UHPC confined by circular steel tube stub columns.

  • We have carried out a preliminary study to search for the new fracture mechanics parameter which can effectively estimate the fatigue life. In this study, the distribution of local fatigue strains near a fatigue crack tip was detailedly revealed using by fine dot grid strain measurement method. From these results, a single parameter (.DELTA.A), which characterize local fatigue strain field, was nearly proposed by the authors.

  • Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be useful for the evaluation of palatal lesions, and strain elastography (performed together with intraoral ultrasonography) is a relatively new sonographic imaging modality. This report describes 2 clinical cases in which strain elastography was used to assess palatal tumors in conjunction with intraoral ultrasonography, CT, and MRI. In the first case, diagnosed as a myoepithelioma, the strain was determined to be 0.000% (strain of normal tissue, 0.556%). In the second case, diagnosed as an adenoid cystic carcinoma, the determined strain was 0.000% (strain of normal tissue, 1.077%). Therefore, we conclude that intraoral strain elastography can be useful for evaluating palatal lesions.
