  • In the 21st century, universal design has started to expand as new design value system for the diversity and various need of user: a new design that can reflects the welfare of the society. In addition, the percentage of population over 65 years old has been rising rapidly in Korea, and we are expected to reach 'aged society' with 14.3% of elderly population in 2018. In rural districts, population of the elderly has already reached 'super-aged society' with over 20%. Until now, however, the most housing condition that the elderly has lived is poor living environment as below housing standards, especially housing in rural districts is very poor. The purpose of this study was to extract issue of housing in the rural districts in terms of universal design concept and reflecting the cultural and living characteristics of rural districts. With this, additionally, this study make understood about the necessity and important of universal design housing to reflect the characteristics of rural districts. For this study, data were collected from field survey and interview. The major results showed the following. 1) There were very various type of housing in rural districts. • The purpose of this study is to develop a bodice pattern drafting method for Korean elderly women over sixty years old on the basis of their physical characteristics which differ from those of adult women. The study is composed as follows; 1. One hundred and five elderly women were measured on 20 items. Twenty-five items including 20 measured items and 5 calculated items were analyzed statistically. 2. A new method was developed based on the results of data analysis. Basic shells constructed from the patterns were examined through three fitting tests for completion. 3. The sensory evaluation was applied to evaluate the new pattern for elderly women by comparing it with the conventional pattern for adult women. A five-point rating scale was developed for the evaluation. According to a statistical analysis of the result of the 20 items on the questionnaire, all the items showed significant differences (a$\leqq$0.01) between the two, with the new pattern having higher scores.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop slacks pattern of elderly women aged over 60s by using the virtual twin and 3D virtual garment simulation system. The results were as follows; first, By using 3D Virtual Garment Simulation, new slacks pattern considered elderly women was development. The basic numerical formula were as follows, front waist girth W/4+2+1.5, back waist girth W/4+1.5+0.5, front hip girth H/4+0.75, back hip girth H/4+1.5, front crotch extension H/16-0.5, back crotch extension H/8-1.3, front dart amount 2 and back dart amount 1.5. Second, according to the results of the new slacks pattern's appearance evaluation, it estimated more highly than existing pattern in silhouette and ease amount, confirming that new slacks pattern is appropriate for the elderly women. Also, new slacks pattern was evaluated to allow proper space length of waist, abdomen and hip. Virtual models production through 3D body scan data, pattern draft and virtual garment digital program were applied to prototypic design method so as to enhance the fitness of ready-made garments. The use of the virtual twin made it impossible to comprehend the appearances and ease correspondent to motions. In order to evaluate wearing fitness, therefore, the system should be improved so as to change arm positions and perform various motions.

  • The purpose of this study is to offer and analysis the stage of elderly in order to improve the quality of living environment of elderly in Korea. Taking into account the retirement age in Korea, those households with people over 60 years old were chosen for the investigation. For the study methods, an examination of documents centering on previous related studies and the analysis of references from the National Statistical Office, from which a general social situation can be clearly obtained, are used. The results are as follows; From viewpoint of the stage of elderly, Parents and children of families mostly live together stage 1 and 2, mostly live separately at stage 3, the rate of living together increases stage 4 and 5. In over stage 4, there are some cases in which the Korean tradition of three generations living under one roof appears as well. The residing period at one place becomes longer as people grow older, which shows clearly the characteristic of 'ageing in place', therefore in order to continue to provide housing support to the elderly, the characteristics of each elderly stage will have to be considered. In the life of the elderly, more and more hobby groups and meetings among the older population have been created, which means that elderly centered social activities will become more various, and facilities and community activated methods will have to be provided accordingly. Elderly people become less adaptable in new housing environments as they get older, therefore the housing has to accommodate their capability to adapt and the degree of aging. The stage of elderly can be used as a basic reference for a more effective solution when planning elderly housing in the future.

  • The Purpose of this study was to identify the effects of the elderly Koreans of residential relocation and to find their conditioning variables that mediate some of the negative effects of residential relocation. The research was performed by questionnares. Subject samples consisted of 448 elderly individuals who have lived for two years or less in one of the two new residential communities in commuting proximity with Seoul: Ilsan or Bundang. Two variables measured for the life of the elderly to residential relocation were the change of the social relationship network and the change of the depression level. Results indicated that the relocation had a substantial disrupting effect on the social network of the elderly. The level of depression of the subjects after relocation was decresed. It was also found that the effects of the elderly to residential relocation was mainly affected by physical factors of environment and residential satisfaction.

  • The number of elderly people living alone increases with the trend of nuclear family in recent aging society and advances of health and medical technologies, where the safety of the elderly people becomes a big social issue. One of the safety system for them these days is that security guards regularly visit homes of the elderly living alone to check their safety. However, it is an inefficient system since it costs a great deal. So, a new efficient system with low cost using modern advanced technologies needs to be developed. In this paper, we implement a monitoring system for elderly living alone using ubiquitous sensor and zigbeX. The system can remotely determine the health status of elderly people and report to their hospitals. Since the system can be implemented with low cost and do the same job as security guards do, we expect that it should replace the existing expensive monitoring system.
