  • Sediments deposited on lateral drain pipes in a tunnel make lateral porous pipes clogged. Since the safety of the tunnel can be affected by this phenomenon, it requires a regular maintenance of the lateral drain pipes. In this study, a series of centrifugal tests were conducted in order to find out the method which can reduce the clogging effect considerably. Four different types of tunnel drain configurations were selected in the experiments. By analysis of sediments for each configuration, the optimum drain configuration that can minimize sedimentation of cement constituents was investigated. As a results, the existing drain configuration which uses filter concrete appear to produce much sediments. In contrast, the new drain configuration appears to be able to reduce sedimentation ratio up to almost 50% comparing with the existing one. From these observations, it may be concluded that the new drain configuration, in which the lateral porous pipes of a tunnel are surrounded by gravel layer and non-woven geotextile, has high efficiency in maintenance.

  • This study aimed to compare the chemical composition of Morus nigra leaves extracts, obtained by maceration, accelerated solvent (ASE) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) under different extraction conditions. With regards to chemical composition, mainly phenolic acids and flavonoids were identified. HPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS allowed the identification of 13 new compounds reported in M. nigra leaves for the first time. ASE as a fast, green and innovative approach, seems to be the best choice for extracting compounds of different polarities within the shortest extraction time. The present study also highlights the potential application of M. nigra extracts as constituents of new added-value formulations.

  • Phyllanthus ussuriensis Rupr. et Maxim. (Euphorbiaceae) has long been used in folk medicine to treat kidney and urinary bladder disturbances, intestinal infections, diabetes, and hepatitis. Reported chemical constituents of this species are one flavonoid (rutin), two gallotannins (gallic acid, methyl gallate) and two ellagitannins. An investigation of the n-BuOH fraction of P. ussuriensis led to the isolation of two new megastigmane glycosides, 10-hydroxy-4,7-megastigmadiene-3-one-9-O-b-D-glucopyranoside (1), 10- hydroxy-4,6-megastigmadiene-3-one-9-O-b-D-glucopyranoside (2) and two known compounds roseoside (3) and 3-oxo-a-ionol-9-O-b-D-glucopyranoside (4). • Mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to the pathogenesis and prognosis of many common disorders, including neurodegeneration, stroke, myocardial infarction, tumor, and metabolic diseases. Ginsenosides, the major bioactive constituents of Panax ginseng (P. ginseng), have been reported to play beneficial roles in the molecular pathophysiology of these diseases by targeting mitochondrial dysfunction. In this review, we first introduce the types of ginsenosides and basic mitochondrial functions. Then, recent findings are summarized on different ginsenosides targeting mitochondria and their key signaling pathways for the treatment of multiple diseases, including neurological disorders, cancer, heart disease, hyperglycemia, and inflammation are summarized. This review may explain the common targets of ginsenosides against multiple diseases and provide new insights into the underlying mechanisms, facilitating research on the clinical application of P. ginseng.

  • Panax ginseng has been reported to protect animals or to help them recover from physical, chemical, or biological stress. The antistress effects of ginseng were evaluated through the measurement of adrenal ascorbic acid, rectal temperature, and plasma level of glucose. lipids and corticosterone. During the treadmill experiments of the antifatigue study, the groups of rats receiving P. ginseng or P. quinquefolius extracts were consistently found to leave fewer fecal boli on the wheel compared with controls. This phenomenon may be due to the reported antistress effects of ginseng. Another possibility could be that the Panax species examined produced anticholinergic effects which in turn inhibited the production of fecal boli. After an anticholinergic study. employing physostigmine and atropine as controls, anticholinergic effect was found not essential for the decrease of fecal boli number left on the wheels during antifatigue studies. The results were consistent with the antistress activity reported previously. Even though the active constituents responsible for the antistress effects of ginseng remained to be determined, the fecal boli counts for stressed rats can be employed as a new protocol for evaluating the antistress effects of ginseng.

  • Nano hybrid superlattices consisting of organic and inorganic components have great potential for creation of new types of functional material by utilizing the wide variety of properties which differ from their constituents. They provide the opportunity for developing new materials with new useful properties. Herein, we fabricated new type of organic-inorganic nano hybrid superlattice thin films by a sequential, self-limiting surface chemistry process known as molecular layer depostion (MLD) combined with atomic layer deposition (ALD). An organic layer was formed at $150^{\circ}C$ using MLD with repeated sequintial adsorption of Hydroquinone and Titanium tetrachloride. A $TiO_2$ inorganic nanolayer was deposited at the same temperature using ALD with alternating surface-saturating reactions of Titanium tetrachloride and water. Using UV-Vis spectroscopy, we confirmed visible light absorption by LMCT. And FTIR spectroscopy and XPS were employed to determine the chemical composition. Ellipsometry and TEM analysis were also used to confirm linear growth of the film versus number of MLD cycles at all same temperature. In addition, p-n junction diodes domonstrated in this study suggest that the film can be suitable for n-type semiconductors.

  • This paper presents an analytical solution to study the combined effect of non-local and stretching effect on the vibration of advanced functionally graded (FG) nanoplates. A new quasi-3D plate theory is presented; there are only five unknowns and any shear correction factor is used. A new displacement field with a new shear warping function is proposed. The equilibrium equations of the FG nanoplates are obtained using the Hamilton principle and solved numerically using the Navier technique. The material properties of functionally graded nanoplates are presumed to change according to the power-law distribution of ceramic and metal constituents. The numerical results of this work are compared with those of other published results to indicate the accuracy and convergence of this theory. Hence, a profound parameterstudy is also performed to show the influence of many parameters of the functionally graded nanoplates on the free vibration responses is investigated.
