  • The major purposes of this study were 1) to present a desirable guideline for writers who would develop the new Introduction-to-Industry textbook through the comparative analysis of 4 different kinds of current Introduction-to-Industry textbooks, 2) to help educators, who make national college entrance exam in the vocational inquiry area, make good exam items with the results of the study, and 3) to offer effective methods of teaching and learning in the field of industrial education with them. Research method used in this study was mainly literature review with the scrutinization of the literature related to the Introduction-to-Industry textbooks. Results of this study showed that all textbooks compared do mostly comply with the national writer's specific guidelines for the Introduction-to-Industry textbooks. However there were varieties for the all textbooks in a sense of deployment balance for the contents of the textbook chapters. There were also considerable differences for the deployment of supplementary materials, evaluative materials, visual materials and etc. according to the characteristics of each textbook. The degree of the connectivity between the textbooks and the national college entrance exam in the area of the vocational inquiry was similar for the each textbook. However, it was not good enough for the students to study one textbook for the preparation of the exam in the vocational inquiry area because the problems in the exam were set in the range of covering the all different kinds of textbooks by the examiners.

  • The mushroom production reached to 1000 billion won in monetary value in Korea. We, however, do not have systematic terminology dictionary published yet. Recently new varieties of medicinal mushrooms in addition to culinary mushrooms are being introduced steadily through out the world. This makes the necessity of coordinated and consistent arrangement of terms involved in culture, cultivation and physiological aspects of mushrooms. Various components in relation to the medicinal and physiological functionality also poses ambiguity in terminology along with the terms used in breeding and genetic researches. Moreover, some of the scientific terms are being used erroneously. In order to help mushroom cultivators, students, and mushroom business personnel in understanding the terms on mushroom science and technology we intended to collect and organize all the terms related to mushroom morphology and cultivation, poison and medicinal functionality, processing and utilization, and so on. Thirteen professionals from each field participated in this project. The fields included here are : 1) Genetics and breeding of mushrooms, 2) Cultivation and physiology of mushrooms, 3) Taxonomy and ecology of mushrooms, 4) Processing and functional components, 5) Blight and insects of mushrooms.

  • The oak mushroom (Lentinula edodes) is a popular edible mushroom that has long been cultivated and eaten throughout Northeast Asia (including Korea). Its taste and flavor are unique. Oak mushrooms are cultivated on logs and in sawdust. The cultivation period on logs is 4-5 years, while the cultivation period in sawdust is 6 months, which is rapidly driving a shift from log to sawdust based cultivation. In particular, the Sanjo 701ho cultivar of L. edodes is a mid-range to high-temperature variety that is widely known for its suitability for summer cultivation on sawdust in Korea. This study summarizes new developments and achievements in the oak mushroom industry in Korea, and details the cultivation history of Sanjo 701ho, its culturing characteristics, various demonstration tests, and the expansion of domestic varieties.

  • Two experiments were conducted to determine the digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) content of 19 rice bran samples and to develop prediction equations for DE and ME based on their chemical composition. The 19 rice bran samples came from different rice varieties, processing methods and regions. The basal diet was formulated using corn and soybean meal (74.43% corn and 22.91% soybean meal and 2.66% vitamins and minerals). The 19 experimental diets based on a mixture of corn, soybean meal and 29.2% of each source of rice bran, respectively. In Exp. 1, 108 growing barrows ($32.1{\pm}4.2kg$) were allotted to 1 of 18 treatments according to a completely randomized design with 6 pigs per treatment. The treatment 1 was the control group which was fed with basal diet. The treatments 2 to 18 were fed with experimental diets. In Exp. 2, two additional rice bran samples were measured to verify the prediction equations developed in Exp. 1. A control diet and two rice bran diets were fed to 18 growing barrows ($34.6{\pm}3.5kg$). The control and experimental diets formulations were the same as diets in Exp. 1. The results showed that the DE ranged from 14.48 to 16.85 (mean 15.84) MJ/kg of dry matter while the ME ranged from 12.49 to 15.84 (mean 14.31) MJ/kg of dry matter. The predicted values of DE and ME of the two additional samples in Exp. 2 were very close to the measured values.

  • Optimum plot shape and size in a uniformity trial in the newly founded experimental farm of KAERI were determined for seed yield with the basic units consisted of 2.5m $\times$ 0.6m plot. Various plot sizes and shapes were made by combination of the basic units. Coefficients of variations for yield were 21% in local branch type variety Kumkang-Dairip and 20% in the introduced branchless type variety Clark. This result indicates that the field in the new experimental farm is appropriate for soybean yield trials when adequate number of replications are employed in the field experiment. In general, C. V. values were gradually decreased with increase of plot sizes. Although the data were not consistant, the errors for the long narrow plots tend to have somewhat smaller than for the square shape plots. A sharp decrease in C.V. value was found from the $4.5\textrm{m}^2$ plot in the variety Kumkang-Dairip and from the $6\textrm{m}^2$ plot in the variety Clark. These results imply that 5-$6\textrm{m}^2$ plot could be used for yield trials in early generations of hybrid progenies. 2.5-5m long plot with 3-4 replications will be practical for yield trials in the early hybrid generations. The C.V. values with 7.5m long plot was about 16% in both varieties and 15.3% in 10m plot. These results indicate that 7.5-10m plot with 3-4 replications could be employed in accurate yield test in the advanced generations.

  • It has been reported that world population continues to increase so that a matter of food security can be a world-wide problem for mankind. An anticipated rise in world population of 30% and the subsequent increased demand for food brings with it challenges in terms of global resource usage and food security. However, ruminant livestock production and consumption make a large contribution to the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which can be attributable to food production. Given the association between GHG and climate change, this is clearly of great concern to the livestock industry worldwide. Nevertheless, ruminant livestock also play an important role in global food security as they can convert the plant cell wall materials and non-protein nitrogen compounds, found widely in plants but indigestible to all monogastric animals including man, into high value proteins for human consumption. Much effort has been made to maximize animal production, feed conversion ratio, and to improve animal breeding in ruminant agriculture. In addition improving feed formulation techniques, developing chemical additives, plant extracts, and new plant varieties for grazing have been tested. Future ruminant production systems will need to capitalize on important benefits of ruminants. It is therefore suggested that ruminant agriculture has a key role to play in maintaining and enhancing provision of quality proteins and essential nutrients for human being but the challenge of reducing GHG emissions, and methane in particular, needs to be successfully addressed.

  • Mutation tachniques inducing more useful mutations and reducing somatic effects need to be improved for crop breeding. Seeds of barley varieties ; Dema, Grosso were treated with two types of mutagens ; 1) chemical treatment: single treatment or double treatment of two mutagens (N-nitroso-N-methylurea ; MNH, Sodium Azide; NaN$_3$) 2) gamma ray irradiation treatment. After treatment, half of seeds were used for germination test and half of seeds were sown to the field. With the higher dose of mutagen both chemical and gamma ray were plants treated, the higher rate of growth reduction rate was in M$_1$ seedling. In chemical treatment, germination rate of seeds, growth rate of coleoptile and root in double treatment of chemical mutagens were better than single treatments, especially in same dose. Growth inhibition rate of plant in double treatment of 1.0mM MNH(0.5mM MNH + 0.5mM MNH), for example, were less than one of plants of single treatment of 1.0mM MNH in pot and petri dish test. Growth reduction rate of culm and fertility rate in M$_1$ plants double treated in same dose of single treatment were also less than single one. With the higher dose of mutagen both chemical and gamma ray were plants treated, the higher frequency of chlorophyll mutants was in M$_2$ seedling. The rate of chlorophyll mutants in double treatment of chemical mutagens were higher than single treatment. Double treatment methods can be a improved method for induction of new good mutants, which were induced more useful mutations and reduced harmful somatic effects.

  • This study was conducted to investigate antioxidant component content during maturity for judgement of optimum harvest time in black soybean. For high-functional black soybean production, accumulation pattern of isoflavone and saponin contents and anti oxidative activity according to maturity stage were investigated. Varieties used in this experiment were Ilpumgemojeongkong and heukcheongkong, which are the recommended black soybean in Korea. Isoflavone and saponin contents during maturity period in black soybean was the highest at $6{\sim}7$ days earlier than general harvesting time. It was indicated that optimum harvesting time for high quality soybean were $3{\sim}7$ days earlier than harvesting time for higher yield. As a result of investigation about accumulation pattern of antioxidant components by maturity stages in seed, total isoflavone content was the highest at 61 DAF in Ilpumgeomjeongkong and at 77 DAF in Heukcheongkong. Contents of total saponin were the highest at 61 DAF and at 71 DAF, respectively. In case of leaf, total isoflavone content was the highest at 55 DAF in Ilpumgeomjeongkong and Heukcheongkong. Contents of total saponin were the highest at 18 DAF and at $55{\sim}71$ DAF, respectively. It showed that black soybean's leaf could be developed as a new health food material, owing to high contents of antioxidant components and biological activity and it's suitable harvest time was at $R_7$.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the nutrient components and physicochemical properties of general ('Superior') and colored potato. Proximate composition, reducing sugar, free sugars, free amino acids, organic acids, minerals were analyzed, and Hunter color values were measured in the study. 'Rose' and 'Blue' (colored potatoes) contained high levels of reducing sugar, and total free sugar content was greatly different according to varieties. Glutamic acid, arginine and ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid were detected to be the three major amino acids in colored potato, and the major organic acids of general potato were oxalic acid, tartaric acid, malic acid and citric acid. All potato contained high level of potassium, calcium and magnesium. The Hunter 'L' value was the highest in 'Jaseo'; Hunter 'a' value was high in 'Blue' and 'Jasim'; Hunter 'b' value was the highest in 'Haryoung'. Overall, colored potato had higher amount of nutrients and physicochemical properties than 'Superior'. Therefore, colored potatoes are expected to be highly valuable items for the development and applications of a functional food. In addition, these results will provide fundamental data for improving sitological value, breeding of new cultivar and promoting of roughage usage.

  • Pure lines were isolated from young gametophytic blades of pigmentation and morphological mutants in Porphyra tenera. Growth, blade-shape and photosynthetic pigment content of pure lines were compared with the wild type. Growth of blade length in the wild type (W, R-B), with round shape and brown color, was fastest at $5{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ and became slower as temperature increased. The blade-shape of the wild type changed from linear to round as temperature increased. The green type (R-G), with round shape and green color, showed slower growth, and the red type (R-R) 'with round shape and red color' showed faster growth than the wild type. The blade-shapes of the green and red types changed from elliptical or linear to round as temperature increased. The phycoerythrin (PE) / phycocyanin (PC) ratio of the green type was markedly lower and the PE/PC ratio of the red type was markedly higher than that of the wild type. The linear type (L-B), with liner shape and brown color, showed faster growth in blade length than the wild type at $10{\sim}20^{\circ}C$ and maintained its linear shape at $5{\sim}15^{\circ}C$. The content of photosynthetic pigments of the linear type was similar to that of the wild type. Each of the pure lines of pigmentation and morphological mutants that were isolated in the present study showed particular patterns in growth, blade-shape and photosynthetic pigment composition. Therefore, they are expected to be useful as new varieties by themselves and to be available for breeding and biotechnological studies.
