Wireless sensor network technologies applicable to various industrial fields are rapidly growing. Because it is difficult to change a battery for the once distributed wireless sensor network, energy efficient design is very critical. In order to achieve this purpose in network design, a number of studies have been examining the energy efficient routing protocol. The sensor network consumes energy in proportion to the distance of data transmission and the data to send. Cluster-based routing Protocols such as LEACH-C achieve energy efficiency through minimizing the distance of data transmission. In LEACH-C, however, the total distance between the nodes consisting the clusters are considered important in constructing clustering. This paper examines the cluster-head-selection-algorithm that reflect the distance between the base station and the cluster-head having a big influence on energy consumption. The Proposed method in this paper brought the result that the performance improved average $4{\sim}7%$ when LEACH-C and the base station are located beyond a certain distance. This result showed that the distance between cluster-head and the base station had a substantial influence on lifetime performance in the cluster-based routing protocol.
The energy consumption problem in wireless sensor networks is investigated. The problem is to expend as little energy as possible receiving and transmitting data, because of constrained battery. In this paper, in order to extend the lifetime of the network, we proposed a location-based clustering algorithm for wireless sensor network with skewed-topology. The proposed algorithm is to deploy multiple child nodes at the sink to avoid bottleneck near the sink and to save energy. Proposed algorithm can reduce control traffic overhead by creating a dynamic cluster. We have evaluated the performance of our clustering algorithm through an analysis and a simulation. We compare our algorithm's performance to the best known centralized algorithm, and demonstrate that it achieves a good performance in terms of the life time.
It is very important to prolong the lifetime of wireless sensor networks by using their limited energy efficiently, since it is not possible to change or recharge the battery of sensor nodes after deployment. LEACH protocol is a typical routing protocol based on the clustering scheme for the efficient use of limited energy. It is composed of a few clusters, which consist of head nodes and member nodes. Though LEACH starts from the supposition that all nodes have data transferred to a head, there must be some nodes having useless data in actual state. In this paper we propose a power saving scheme by making a member node dormant if previous sensed data and current data is same. We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme in comparison with original clustering algorithms. Simulation results validate our scheme has better performance in terms of the number of alive nodes as time evolves.

A crucial issue in deploying wireless sensor networks is to perform a sensing task in an area of interest in an energy-efficient manner since sensor nodes have limited energy Power. The most practical solution to solve this problem is to use a node wake-up scheduling protocol that some sensor nodes stay active to provide sensing service, while the others are inactive for conserving their energy In this paper, we present a simple wake-up scheduling protocol, which can maintain sensing coverage required by applications and yet increase network lifetime by turning off some redundant nodes. In order to do this, we use the concept of a weighted average distance. A node decides whether it is active or inactive based on the weighted average distance. The proposed protocol allows sensor nodes to sleep dynamically while satisfying the required sensing coverage.

Wireless Sensor Network(WSN) is a network which consists of sensor nodes(SNs) in data collection area. It is hard for the SNs to replace battery. Thus energy and transfer efficiency is important because the energy is limited. In this paper, we propose energy-efficient data collection algorithm for wireless sensor networks by using mobile agent in distance-based cluster structure. For avoid collisions and guarantee low latency, make distance-based topology and build cluster by the topology. For performance comparison of the proposed algorithm, compare with existing mobile agent algorithm. When network constructed by 300 nodes, proposed algorithm has performance increase than existing algorithm(GCF, LCF, TBID) in network lifetime 194, 124.6, 1.46 times each and data merging energy efficiency 87.5%, 85%, 45% each.
Top-k queries are issued to find out the highest (or lowest) readings in many sensor applications. Many top-k query processing algorithms are proposed to reduce energy consumption; FILA installs a filter at each sensor node and suppress unnecessary sensor updates; PRIM allots priorities to sensor nodes and collects the minimal number of sensor reading according to the priorities. However, if many sensor reading converge into the same range of sensor values, it leads to a problem that many false positives are occurred. In this paper, we propose a cluster-based approach to reduce them effectively. Our proposed algorithm operates in two phases: top-k query processing in the cluster level and top-k query processing in the tree level. False positives are effectively filtered out in each level. Performance evaluations show that our proposed algorithm reduces about 70% false positives and achieves about 105% better performance than the existing top-k algorithms in terms of the network lifetime.

WSN is composed of a lot of small sensors with the limited hardware resources. In WSN, at the initial stage, sensor nodes are randomly deployed over the region of interest, and self-configure the clustered networks by grouping a bunch of sensor nodes and selecting a cluster header among them. Specially, in Mobile-WSN environment, in which the administrator's intervention is restricted, the self-configuration capability is essential to establish a power-conservative Mobile-WSN which provides broad sensing coverage and communication coverage. In this paper, we propose a self-configuration routing protocol for Mobile-WSN, which consists of step-wise novel protocols for initial deployment, effective joining and removal of sensor nodes, which result in reducing overall power consumption, and extending the lifetime of network.
The LEACH does not use flooding method for data transmission and this makes low power consumption. So performance of the WSN is increased. On the other hand, QoS based algorithm which use restricted flooding method in WSN also achieves low power consuming rate by reducing the number of nodes that are participated in routing path selection. But when the data is delivered to the sink node, the LEACH choose a routing path which has a small hop count. And it leads that the performance of the entire network is worse. In the paper we propose a QoS based energy efficient clustering and routing algorithm in WSN. I classify the type of packet with two classes, based on the energy efficiency that is the most important issue in WSN. We provide the differentiated services according to the different type of packet. Simulation results evaluated by the NS-2 show that proposed algorithm extended the network lifetime 2.47 times at average. And each of the case in the class 1 and class 2 data packet, the throughput is improved 312% and 61% each.

In Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for Internet of Things (IoT) environment, fault tolerance is a most fundamental issue due to strict energy constraint of sensor node. In this paper, a robust energy saving data dissemination protocol for IoT-WSNs is proposed. Minimized energy consumption and dissemination delay time based on signal strength play an important role in our scheme. The representative dissemination protocol SPIN (Sensor Protocols for Information via Negotiation) overcomes overlapped data problem of the classical Flooding scheme. However, SPIN never considers distance between nodes, thus the issue of dissemination energy consumption is becoming more important problem. In order to minimize the energy consumption, the shortest path between sensors should be considered to disseminate the data through the entire IoT-WSNs. SPMS (Shortest Path Mined SPIN) scheme creates routing tables using Bellman Ford method and forwards data through a multi-hop manner to optimize power consumption and delay time. Due to these properties, it is very hard to avoid heavy traffic when routing information is updated. Additionally, a node failure of SPMS would be caused by frequently using some sensors on the shortest path, thus network lifetime might be shortened quickly. In contrast, our scheme is resilient to these failures because it employs energy aware concept. The dissemination delay time of the proposed protocol without a routing table is similar to that of shortest path-based SPMS. In addition, our protocol does not require routing table, which needs a lot of control packets, thus it prevents excessive control message generation. Finally, the proposed scheme outperforms previous schemes in terms of data transmission success ratio, therefore our protocol could be appropriate for IoT-WSNs environment.

Nowadays, the Internet of Things (IoT) is adopted to enable effective and smooth communication among different networks. In some specific application, the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are used in IoT to gather peculiar data without the interaction of human. The WSNs are self-organizing in nature, so it mostly prefer multi-hop data forwarding. Thus to achieve better communication, a cross-layer routing strategy is preferred. In the cross-layer routing strategy, the routing processed through three layers such as transport, data link, and physical layer. Even though effective communication achieved via a cross-layer routing strategy, energy is another constraint in WSN assisted IoT. Cluster-based communication is one of the most used strategies for effectively preserving energy in WSN routing. This paper proposes a Bio-inspired cross-layer routing (BiHCLR) protocol to achieve effective and energy preserving routing in WSN assisted IoT. Initially, the deployed sensor nodes are arranged in the form of a grid as per the grid-based routing strategy. Then to enable energy preservation in BiHCLR, the fuzzy logic approach is executed to select the Cluster Head (CH) for every cell of the grid. Then a hybrid bio-inspired algorithm is used to select the routing path. The hybrid algorithm combines moth search and Salp Swarm optimization techniques. The performance of the proposed BiHCLR is evaluated based on the Quality of Service (QoS) analysis in terms of Packet loss, error bit rate, transmission delay, lifetime of network, buffer occupancy and throughput. Then these performances are validated based on comparison with conventional routing strategies like Fuzzy-rule-based Energy Efficient Clustering and Immune-Inspired Routing (FEEC-IIR), Neuro-Fuzzy- Emperor Penguin Optimization (NF-EPO), Fuzzy Reinforcement Learning-based Data Gathering (FRLDG) and Hierarchical Energy Efficient Data gathering (HEED). Ultimately the performance of the proposed BiHCLR outperforms all other conventional techniques.
