  • This paper condisers a problem of determining arc capacities for a communication network with fixed-charged linear arc-cost functions, which is known to be NP-hard. For the problem, an efficient heuristic solution procedure is derived. The procedure is further shown working well for designing arc capacities of a network in a situation where the network needs to be extended by connecting its nodes to some new nodes or where the network needs to be extended by expanding its arc capacities.

  • This study addresses manufacturers' ability to influence their supply chain network in order to adapt to their competitive environment. From the perspective of a manufacture, the supply chain comprises a network of suppliers and customers, and is theoretically viewed as a complex adaptive system. This study considers the following questions: (1) How can adaptability of supply chain network be operationally defined? (2) How does adaptability of supply chain network lead to combinative capabilities? (3) What is the influence of adaptability of supply chain network on business performance? Drawing on literature streams in supply chain management, operations strategy, organizational change and learning, and complexity theory, this study develops and tests the constructs and operational measures of adaptability of supply chain network and model the nomological set of relationships among constructs that form the basis of our theory. This study then develops and tests a model describing the outcomes of adaptability of supply chain network and its influence on combinative capability and business performance. Empirical results of this study show that adaptability supply chain network directly and positively affects combinative capability. Further, this study finds that adaptability of supply chain network does not impact business performance directly, but rather is mediated through combinative capability, which provides the requisite variety for firms to survive and thrive in dynamic environments.

  • The environment of the access network service market is characterized by uncertain demand and various competing alternative technologies. In Korea, despite the introduction of competition, dominant Public Network Operator(PNO) still leads the market. Therefore, the decision of PNO has a great impact on the access network evolution. In this paper, we propose an model which aims to reduce risks and both investment and operating costs, to cope with the uncertain demand and technology evolution. We expect this model to provide a tool analyze risks and evaluate various strategies on the network evolution.

The Application of Network Theory to Subway Transportation in Seoul, Korea

  • Network approach is used to find the shortest paths and transportation time between the subway stations in Seoul, Korea. Because of transfer stations, we reconstruct the subway network to compute the shortest routes and corresponding transportation times. The reconstructed network is useful to obtain desired information because it can handle the transfer time between tracks. Time and route information about the subway system is obtained and it will be displayed in the subway guide board at each station. Then, all passengers can have the information of shortest route to a destination and corresponding transportation time.
