  • This paper reports the irradiation effect on the deformation behavior and tensile fracture properties of A533B RPV steel. An inverse identification technique using iterative finite element (FE) simulation was used to determine those properties from tensile data for the A533B RPV steel irradiated at 65 to $100^{\circ}C$ and deformed at room temperature. FE simulation revealed that the plastic instability at yield followed by softening for higher doses was related to the occurrence of localized necking immediately after yielding. The strain-hardening rate in the equivalent true stress-true strain relationship was still positive during the necking deformation. The tensile fracture stress was less dependent on the irradiation dose, whereas the tensile fracture strain and fracture energy decreased with increasing dose level up to 0.1 dpa and then became saturated. However, the tensile fracture strain and fracture energy still remained high after high-dose irradiation, which is associated with a large amount of ductility during the necking deformation for irradiated A533B RPV steel.

  • In spite of progress in predicting ductile failure, the development of a macroscopic yield criterion to describe damage evolution in HCP (hexagonal close-packed) materials remains a challenge. HCP materials display strength differential effects (i.e., different behavior in tension versus compression) in their plastic response due to twinning. Cazacu and Stewart(2009) developed an analytical yield criterion for porous material containing randomly distributed spherical voids in an isotropic, incompressible matrix that shows tension-compression asymmetry. The goal of the calculations in this paper is to investigate the effect of the tension-compression asymmetry on necking induced by void nucleation, evolution and consolidation. In order to investigate the effect of the tension-compression asymmetry of the matrix on necking and fracture initiation, three isotropic materials A, B, and C were examined with different ratios of tension-compression asymmetry. The various types of material had BCC, FCC, and HCP crystal structures, respectively. The ratio between tension and compression in plastic flow significantly influences the fracture shape produced by damage propagation as well as affecting the localized neck.

  • Knowing a material's true stress-strain curve is essential for performing a nonlinear finite element analysis to solve an elastoplastic problem. This study presents a simple methodology to determine the true stress-strain curve of type 304 and 316 austenitic stainless steels in the full range of strain from a typical tensile test. Before necking, the true stress and strain values are directly converted from engineering stress and strain data, respectively. After necking, a true stress-strain equation is determined by iteratively conducting finite element analysis using three pieces of information at the necking and the fracture points. The Hockett-Sherby equation is proposed as an optimal stress-strain model in a non-uniform deformation region. The application to the stainless steel under different temperatures and loading conditions verifies that the strain hardening behavior of the material is adequately described by the determined equation, and the estimated engineering stress-strain curves are in good agreement with those of experiments. The presented method is intrinsically simple to use and reduces iterations because it does not require much experimental effort and adopts the approach of determining the stress-strain equation instead of correcting the individual stress at each strain point.

  • In this work, we predict a true fracture strain using load-displacement curves from tensile test and finite element analysis (FEA), and suggest a method for acquiring true stress-strain (SS) curves by predicted fracture strain. We first derived the true SS curve up to necking point from load-displacement curve. As the beginning, the posterior necking part of true SS curve is linearly extrapolated with the slope at necking point. The whole SS curve is then adopted for FE simulation of tensile test. The Bridgman factor or suitable plate correction factors are applied to pre and post FEA. In the load-true strain curve from FEA, the true fracture strain is determined as the matching point to test fracture load. The determined true strain is validated by comparing with test fracture strain. Finally, we complete the true SS curve by combining the prior necking part and linear part, the latter of which connects necking and predicted fracture points.

  • An experimental method to measure Q-parameter in-situ is described. The basic idea comes from the fact that the side necking near a crack tip indicates the loss of stress triaxiality, which can be scaled by Q. From the out-of-plane displacement and the in-plane strain near the surface of side necking, stress field averaged through the thickness is calculated and then Q is determined from the difference between the stress field and the HRR field corresponding to the identical J-integral. To prove the validity, three-dimensional finite element analysis has been performed for a CT configuration with side-groove. Q-value which was calculated directly from the near-tip stress field is compared with that determined by simulating the experimental procedure according to the proposed method, that is, the Q-value determined from the lateral displacement and the inplane strain. Also, the effect of location where the displacement and strain are measured is explored.

  • An experimental method for measuring side-necking deformation near a crack-tip is described. It is based on Stereoscopic Digital Speckle Photography and Digital Image Correlation, and it is simple and robust to mechanical vibration inherent to a hydraulic material test system. The validity and accuracy are evaluated through a calibration fur rigid body translation. A case study has been performed for a CT specimen made of a ductile steel and the three dimensional profiles of the side-necked region are presented as the load increases. Also, the details of the procedure and the surface treatment are discussed.

  • Kim et al. suggested an experimental method to determine the Q parameter in situ from the out-of-plane displacement and the in-plane strains on the surface of side necking near the crack tip. In this paper, the procedure to evaluate the stress triaxiality near a crack tip such as the Q parameter is to be polished in the details for simplicity and accuracy. That is, Q and hydrostatic stress are determined only from the out-of-plane displacement, but not using in-plane strain, which is hard to measure. And also, the plastic modulus is determined by an alternative way. Through three-dimensional finite element analyses for a standard CT specimen with 20% side-grooves, the validities of the new procedures are examined in comparison to the old ones. The effect of location where the displacements are measured to determine the stress triaxiality is explored.

  • In the rolling process, keeping the accuracy of the slab width is a very important problem. So the edge rolling is used with the plate rolling. But in the edge rolling, a local contraction of width, called "width necking", occurs in the top and tail portion of a slab and becomes the cause of crop loss. In this investigation, the three dimensional deformation behavior in the edge-plate rolling is simulated by rigid plastic FEM(PROLL). And the influence of the rolling condition on "width necking" and the accuracy of width is examined.
