A coupled approach is proposed for the prediction of sheet profile in sheet casting process, which combines one-dimensional analytical method on planar elongational flow region and three-dimensional numerical method on the other region. The strategy is constructed from the observations that the flow domain of sheet casting process can be separated into two parts based old the flow kinematics. The flow field in the central region of sheet, over which the planar elongational flow dominates, is possibly replaced by one-dimensional analytical solution. Then only a partial flow domain near the edge region of sheet, where the flow kinematics cannot be described by the planar elongational flow itself, requires three-dimensional numerical simulation. Good agreement is observed between the coupled approach developed in this study and the full three-dimensional numerical simulation previously developed and reported by the authors. This coupled approach may have provided flexibility with low costs to accommodate a wide range of die sizes in sheet casting process.

The particles velocity in the instantaneous flow field and velocity change of particles along the jet centerline for various particle diameter in a circular turbulent impingement jet are investigated by using particle image velocimetry(PIV) and an equation of particle motion simplified by terms of inertia forces, drag and gravitational force. The jet Reynolds number was 3300 and 8700, and glass beads of 30,58 and 100$\mu$m in diameter were used. The PIV results show that the direction and size of velocity depends not only on the number density of particle but also on the particle momentum. The results obtained form calculation suggest that the particle velocity near the first impingement region deviated from local air velocity, which accords well with the PIV results. The rebound height of particle increase with the particle diameter. In the second-impingement, particle velocities increased sluggishly with Re=3300 but particle velocities uniformed with Re=8700 in stagnation region.

The electrical characteristics of poly-Si TFT's with offset structure by negative bias stress are systematically investigated as a function of offset length. The changes of electrical characteristics, V$\_$th/, off-current, on/off ratio, in the offset structured poly-Si TFT's are smaller than that of the conventional structured poly-Si TFT's under the stress condition (V$\_$ds/=20V, V$\_$gs/=-20V). It is found that the hot carrier effect by negative bias stress is suppressed by the offset structured poly-Si TFT's because the local electric field near the drain region is decreased by offset region.
Amorphous chalcogenide glasses are highly transparent in the near $1{\mu}m$ wavelength region, which corresponds to the wavelength region of the optical communication system. Optical properties of these materials, including the transmittance, the optical gap, and the shift associated with reversible photostruction change, were measured. Thereafter, optical waveguide was fabricated by the laser lithographic technique and then, guide modes were measured by utilizing the end-fire coupling technique. The field patterns of both the single mode and the multimode waveguide were observed.
Analyzed in this paper is fluid flow in the region near the exhaust and blower ports of the ventilation ducts inside a vehicle tunnel. Theoretical analysis shows that prediction of the energy loss in this region is important for designing the ventilation system. A finite-difference numerical model for the two-dimensional turbulent flow field was used to obtain the flow solution as well as the energy loss. It was shown that the blower-nozzle angle ($\beta$) had an important role in establishing both the pressure gradient and the energy loss, while the effect of the distance between two ports on them was not so significant.

This paper presents results from a wind tunnel study that examined the drag coefficient and wind flow over an asymmetric wave train immersed in turbulent boundary layer flow. The modeled wavy surface consisted of eight replicas of a statistically-valid hurricane-generated wave, located near the coast in the shoaling wave region. For an aerodynamically rough model surface, the air flow remained attached and a pronounced speed-up region was evident over the wave crest. A wavelength-averaged drag coefficient was determined using the wind profile method, common to both field and laboratory settings. It was found that the drag coefficient was approximately 50% higher than values obtained in deep water hurricane conditions. This study suggests that nearshore wave drag is markedly higher than over deep water waves of similar size, and provides the groundwork for assessing the impact of nearshore wave conditions on storm surge modeling and coastal wind engineering.
Utilizing a Calcium filter, a large two ribbon flare of an importance 2.5Xj31? was recorded at. King Abdul-Aziz University Solar Observatory (KAAUSO) at the 30th of October 1991. This chromosphenc flare observation, which is of special importance since it is rarely reported, was for a flare that occurred near the south west of the equator at the vicinity of a large sunspot group on an active region known as AR 6891. The observed foot points of this flare had a strange behavior in which the separating motion of the ribbons were not typical of most flares, rather were nearly orthogonal. In this article we present the characteristics of the main sunspot group of this active region and try to investigate its evolution and fragmentation with time. Information regarding magnetic fields and velocity fields are necessary to understand the restructuring of the magnetic field pattern and plasma motion, and hence the changes that could lead to the occurrence of such an interesting flare.

In this paper, the concept of the infinite element is applied to the linear wave diffraction and radiation problems. The hydrodynamic pressure forces are assumed to be inertially dominated, and viscous effects are neglected. The near field region surrounding the solid body is modelled using the conventional finite elements, and the far field region is represented using the infinite elements .In order to represent the scattered wave potentials in the far field region more accurately, the infinite elements are developed using special shape functions derived from the asymptotic expressions for the analytical eigenseries solution of the scattered waves. The system matrices of the infinite elements are constructed by performing the integration in the infinite direction analytically to achieve computational efficiency. Numerical analyses are carried out for vertical axisymmetric bodies to validate the infinite elements developed here. Comparisons with the results by other available numerical solution methods show that the present method using the infinite elements gives fairly good results. Numerical experiments are per-formed to determine the suitable location of the infinite elements and the appropriate size of the finite elements which directly affect accuracy and efficiency of the solution.
When the magnetotail is disturbed by an impulsive input such as the substorm onset, compressional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves play an important role in delivering perturbed energy and exciting various wave modes and currents. The plasmasheet, in which relatively hot plasmas exist, is surrounded by relatively cold plasmas at the plasma sheet boundary layer (PSBL) and the equatorial plasmasphere. Since the Alfven speed significantly varies near these regions, the compressional waves are expected to undergo mode conversion by inhomogeneity at the boundary between cold and hot plasma regions. We investigate how the initial compressional MHD wave energy is reflected, transmitted, and absorbed across that boundary by adopting the invariant imbedding method (IIM) which gives the exact reflection, transmission, and absorption coefficients without any theoretical approximations for given frequencies and wave numbers. The IIM method is very useful in quantifying the reflection and transmission of compressional waves in the sense that we can calculate how much fast mode wave energy is delievered into shear Alfven waves or field-aligned currents. Our results show that strongly localized absorption occurs at the boundary region. This feature suggests that localized field-aligned currents can be impulsively excited at such boundary regions by any compressional disturbances, which is highly associated with impulsive auroral brightening at the substorm onset. We compare our results with previous studies in cold inhomogeneous plasmas.

In this paper, the physical meanings of LDD optimization are treated by numerical simulation and related experiments are attempted to analyzed the optimized LDD structure. Firstly, according to the numerical analysis, the electric field under the n-region near drain is low and uniformly distributed and the current flow is widely distributed in this region under the optimized conditions. It is also found that this optimized point should be achieved by globally optimizing all the process and electrical conditions. Secondly, the maximum electric field, which is obtained from the substrate current to the drain current ratio, is minimized under the optimized condition according to the experiment. Further, the device lifetime is maximized and the n-resistance is changed smoothly from the channel resistance to the $n^+$junction resistance.
