  • Oil-film flow visualizations and three-dimensional flow measurements have been conducted in the downstream region of a butterfly-type valve used in air-conditioning systems, with the variation of a disk open angle. The flow visualizations in the flow symmetry plane show that there are a pair of counter-rotating separation/recirculation zones as wall as two jet-like near-wall flows. These flow disturbances are strongly depends on the disk open angle. Based on the flow visualization, a qualitative flow model is suggested in the near-field and downstream region of the valve disk. For a small disk open angle, the mean velocities and turbulent intensities have relatively small values in the near-field of the valve disk, but they do not show uniform distributions even in some downstream region. With an increment of the disk open angle, mean velocity variations and turbulent intensities are greatly increased in the immediate downstream region, but uniform distributions are quickly resumed as departing from the valve disk. The mass flow rate remains nearly constant for the disk open angles less than 30 degrees, meanwhile it strongly depends on the disk open angles between 45 and 75 degrees. The pressure loss is found to be about zero for the disk open angles less than 45 degrees, but is substantially increased for those larger than 75 degrees.

  • The winter case of the near-field dilution at the Masan outfalls has been studied by field measurements and CORMIX model simulations. Dilution rates of the wastewater discharge in winter were obtained by a salinity deficit method using the field data observed in the neap tidal period of February, 1999. The observed dilution rates in winter season were found to be very high in the range of 90~130 due to the isopycnal mixing of ambient density compared with the summer range of 30~40 under weak neap tidal currents. The results of CORMIX model simulations also show that the winter dilution rates under a weak ambient current(Ua=6.0ms/s) were increased by 3-fold of the summer dilution rates. However, the difference between two seasons becomes small by 30% under a strong current(Ua=15.5cm/s). This result indicates that the dilution and hydrodynamic mixing process of the effluents are more influenced by ambient crossflow condition than by ambient density stratification at the outfalls site.

  • Observing the solar atmosphere with ground-based telescopes in the near-infrared has a number of advantages when compared to classical measurements in visible wavelengths. One of them comes from the magnetic sensitivity of spectral lines, which varies as ${\lambda}_g$, where g is the effective $Land{\acute{e}}$ factor of the transition. This wavelength dependence makes the near-infrared range adequate to study subtle spatial or temporal variations of the magnetic field. Spectral lines, such as the photospheric Fe I $1.5648{\mu}m$ spectral line, with a $Land{\acute{e}}$ factor g=3, have often been used in the past for this type of studies. To study the chromosphere, the Ca II IR triplet and the He I $1.0830{\mu}m$ triplet are the most often observed lines. The latter has the additional advantage that the photospheric Si I $1.0827{\mu}m$ is close enough so that photosphere and chromosphere can be simultaneously recorded with a single detector in a spectrograph. The instrument TIP (Tenerife Infrared Polarimeter) has been continuously operating since 1999 at the 70-cm German VTT of the Observatorio del Teide and has been recently moved to the 1.5-m German GREGOR. During all this time, results have been obtained concerning the nature of the weak photospheric magnetic field of the quiet sun, magneto-acoustic wave propagation, evolution with the cycle of sunspot magnetic fields, photospheric and chromospheric magnetic field in emerging regions, magnetic field in chromospheric structures such as filaments, prominences, flares, and spicules, etc. In this talk, I will review the main results obtained after all these observations and mention the main challenges for the future. With its novel polarization-free design and a complete suite of instruments aimed at simultaneous (imaging and spectroscopic) observations of the solar photosphere and chromosphere, the EST (European Solar Telescope) will represent a major world-wide infrastructure to understand the physical nature of all these phenomena.

  • Magnetohydrodynamic wave phenomena have been investigated in the deep plasmasphere by the electric field measurements in the EXOS-D(Akebono) satellite. EXOS-D has highly eccentric orbits(the perigee: 274km, the apogee: 10,500km), which allows relatively long observational time interval near the apogee region compared to other satellites which pass by the same region with less eccentric orbits. Case studies are performed on one month data of October in 1989 where the apogee is located near the equator and the magnetic local time is about 9:00-12:00 a.m. in the dayside plasmasphere. The observational region ranges from L=2 to L=3 and the magnetic latitude is restricted to less than 30 degrees. The power spectrum is examined for each 128 point series of 8-sec averaged data through a FFT, which covers f = 0~62.3 mHz frequency bands. The results are well consistent with field line resonances (FLRs) and cavity modes in the plasmasphere.

  • This study utilises repeated numerical tests to understand the effects of variable near-surface conditions on time-lapse seismic surveys. The numerical tests were aimed at reproducing the significant scattering observed in field experiments conducted at the Naylor site in the Otway Basin for the purpose of $CO_2$ sequestration. In particular, the variation of elastic properties of both the top soil and the deeper rugose clay/limestone interface as a function of varying water saturation were investigated. Such tests simulate the measurements conducted in dry and wet seasons and to evaluate the contribution of these seasonal variations to seismic measurements in terms of non-repeatability. Full elastic pre-stack modelling experiments were carried out to quantify these effects and evaluate their individual contributions. The results show that the relatively simple scattering effects of the corrugated near-surface clay/limestone interface can have a profound effect on time-lapse surveys. The experiments also show that the changes in top soil saturation could potentially affect seismic signature even more than the corrugated deeper surface. Overall agreement between numerically predicted and in situ measured normalised root-mean-square (NRMS) differences between repeated (time-lapse) 2D seismic surveys warrant further investigation. Future field studies will include in situ measurements of the elastic properties of the weathered zone through the use of 'micro Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP)' arrays and very dense refraction surveys. The results of this work may impact on other areas not associated with $CO_2$ sequestration, such as imaging oil production over areas where producing fields suffer from a karstic topography, such as in the Middle East and Australia.

  • The geomagnetic measurements on the Korean Territory began in 1918 in the Incheon (Zinsen in Japanese pronunciation) Observatory of which the annual means of total magnetic field intensity, declination, and inclination still remain for 1918-1944. From 1970s, the National Geography Institute (NGI) and the Radio Research Laboratory (RRL) have tried independently to measure the geomagnetic field continuously. The RRL as the result of such efforts has installed 3 geomagnetic observatories, the first in Icheon and the second in Yongin in 1996, and the third in Jeju in 1997. From 1992, the Korea Institute of Geology, Mining and Materials (KIGAM) has tried also to measure the geomagnetism and as the result they have installed 2 geomagnetic observatories, one in Daejeon in 1998 and the other in Gyeongju in 2000. Nowadays, the RRL and the KIGAM collect the measured data into their own main computers by telecommunication in real time. The two institutions will cooperate in near future to link the two geomagnetic data bases so that the whole set of geomagnetic data measured on Korean Territory could be provided to the end users in Korea.

  • Detailed characteristics of the mean flow field inside the rotor of a multiblade fan with scroll are presented in this paper by measurements and visualizations. The measurements were taken with a five-hole probe and conformed by smoke test. How field is distinguished clearly in 3 regions with respect to the flow directions. The first region is near the exit of scroll where the fluid flows the opposite direction to the rotation of rotor. The second is opposite side of the scroll exit where the fluid flows the same direction to the rotation of rotor. The third is the region where the fluid flows toward the blades directly with the largest values comparatively. The strongest recirculation is happened in the second region, and the weakest one is in the third region. This complex configuration makes the flow field highly non-uniform and may cause to generate a noise and ineffective flow efficiency.

  • On board satellite magnetometer measures all possible magnetic components, such as the core and crustal components from the inner Earth, and magnetospheric, ionospheric and' its coupled components from the outer Earth. Due to its dipole and non-dipole features, separation of the respective component from the measurements is most difficult unless the comprehensive knowledge of each field characteristics and the consequent modeling methods are solidly constructed. Especially, regional long wavelength magnetic signals of the crust are strongly masked by the main field and dynamic external field and hence difficult to isolate in the satellite measurements. In particular, the un-modeled effects of the strong auroral external fields and the complicated behavior of the core field near the geomagnetic poles conspire to greatly reduce the crustal magnetic signal-to-noise ratio in the polar region relative to the rest of the Earth. We can, however, use spectral correlation theory to filter the static lithospheric and core field components from the dynamic external field effects that are closely related to the geomagnetic storms affecting ionospheric current disturbances. To help isolate regional lithospheric anomalies from core field components, the correlations between CHAMP magnetic anomalies and the pseudo-magnetic effects inferred from satellite gravity-derived crustal thickness variations can also be exploited, Isolation of long wavelengths resulted from the respective source is the key to understand and improve the models of the external magnetic components as well as of the lower crustal structures. We expect to model the external field variations that might also be affected by a sudden upheaval like tsunami by using our algorithm after isolating any internal field components.

  • The magnetic flux profiles in SmBCO and YBCO coated conductors(CC) in the presence of the external field were comparatively investigated by magneto-optic image and scanning hall probe measurements. The current distributions calculated by using the inversion method from measured field profiles show that the decrease of current densities near the edges of SmBCO CC is more significant than those of YBCO CC. Through the comparison of the numerical analysis based on Kim's critical state model and the Brandt and Indenbom's solution, we found that this feature is related to their different field dependant properties of the critical current densities.
