  • The slip effect from the molecular interaction between fluid particles and solid surface atoms plays a key role in microscale fluid transport and heat transfer since the relative importance of surface forces increases as the size of the system decreases to the microscale. There exist two models to describe the slip effect: the Maxwell slip model in which the slip correction is made on the basis of the degree of shear stress near the wall surface and the Langmuir slip model based on a theory of adsorption of gases on solids. In this study, as the first step towards developing a general purpose numerical code of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for computational simulations of microscale fluid flow and heat transfer, two slip models are implemented into a finite element numerical code of a simplified equation. In addition, a pressure-driven gas flow in a microchannel is investigated by the numerical code in order to validate numerical results.

  • A kinetic theory analysis is made of low-speed gas flows in a microfluidic system consisted of three microchannels in series. The Boitzmann equation simplified by a collision model is solved by means of a finite difference approximation with the discrete ordinate method. For the evaluation of the present method results are compared with those from the DSMC method and an analytical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions. Calculations are made for flows at various Knudsen numbers and pressure ratios across the channel. The results compared well with those from the DSMC method. It is shown that the analytical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions which is suited fur fully developed flows can give relatively good results. In predicting the geometrically complex flows up to a Knudsen number of about 0.06. It is also shown that the present method can be used to analyze extremely low-speed flow fields for which the DSMC method is Impractical.

  • In the present numerical analysis, investigation of the effect of blade loadings from design shape on the slip factor variation was studied. Both the Eckardt radial bladed impeller and the backswept impeller were analyzed. In addition, a new design of the blade profile was arbitrarily attempted to generate a center-loading pattern in the original backswept impeller. Three dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes flow analysis with the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model was applied to get the numerical slip factor at each impeller exit plane using the mass-averaging technique. The numerical slip (actors are in good agreement with the experimental ones and the Wiesner's slip factors deviate further from the numerical and experimental ones in both backswept impellers. Deviation angles and meridional channel loadings are found in no relation with the trend of change of the slip factor. Blade-to-blade loadings in midspan location are, however, found to have a direct relationship, especially at the sections where maximum loadings we to be expected. That information can be utilized in establishing an improved expression for slip factors in the future.

  • As the second part of the author's study, the aerodynamic blockage and the slip factor of 8 centrifugal compressor impellers are investigated, when the flow rate is changed from numerical stall to choke, using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis results. Based on all the exit blockage distributions, an improved model equation with two adjusting coefficients is developed for the use in design processes with the agile engineering purpose. A popular expression of constant slip factors, the Wiesner's equation, cannot be applied in design processes when more accurate prediction is strongly required at design and off-design points. Slip factor variation is found to be also influenced by the blade loadings at midspan. When the flow rate is changed, a pattern of the slip factor variations is assumed to be a simple form which can be explained using midspan blade loading distributions.

  • Recently micro shock tube is extensively being used in many diverse fields of engineering applications but the detailed flow physics involved in it is hardly known due to high Knudsen number and strong compressibility effects. Unlike the macro shock tube, the surface area to volume ratio for a micro shock tube is very large. This unique effect brings many complexities into the flow physics that makes the micro shock tube different compared with the macro shock tube. In micro shock tube, the inter- molecular forces of working gas can play an important role in specifying the flow characteristics of the unsteady shock wave flow which is essentially generated in all kinds of shock tubes. In the present study, a CFD method was used to predict and visualize the unsteady shock wave flows using the unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equations, furnished with the no-slip and slip wall boundary conditions. Maxwell's slip equations were used to mathematically model the shock movement at high Knudsen number. The present CFD results show that the propagation speed of the shock wave is directly proportional to the initial pressure and diameter of micro shock tube.

  • In this paper the CSCM type upwind flux difference splitting Navier-Stokes method has been applied to study the ARL-SL19 supersonic/transonic compressor cascade flow. H-type grid was chosen for its simplicity in applying cyclic tridiagonal matrix algorithm along with conventional slip/no-slip boundary conditions. The thin-layer algebraic model of Baldwin-Lomax was employed for the calculation of turbulent flows. The test case inlet Mach No. was 1.612 and inlet/exit pressure ratio($P_2/P_1$) was 2.15. The results were compared with experimental results from current method were compared well in suction surface with the experiments and other computational results; however, not well in pressure surface. It might be due to the complex flowfields such as shock/boundary layer interaction, turbulence, and flow separation, etc. In the future, a proper turbulence modelling and adaptive grid system will be studied to improve the solution quality.

  • The present study numerically investigated the effect of the advance ratio on the wake characteristics of the marine propeller in the propeller open water test. Therefore, a wide range of the advance ratio(0.2${\kappa}-{\omega}$SST Model are considered. The three-dimensional vortical structures of tip vortices are visualized by the swirl strength, resulting in fast decay of the tip vortices with increasing the advance ratio. Furthermore, to better understanding of the wake evolution, the contraction ratio of the slip stream for different advance ratios is extracted from the velocity fields. Consequently, the slip stream contraction ratio decreases with increasing the advance ratio and successively the difference of the slip stream contraction ratio between J=0.2 and J=0.8 is about 0.1R.
