A Simulation Study of Artificial Cochlea Based on Artificial Basilar Membrane for Improving the Performance of Frequency Separation (인공기저막 기반 인공와우의 주파수 분리 성능향상을 위한 인공기저막 전산모사)

  • The basilar membrane (BM), one of organs of cochlea, has the specific positions of the maximum amplitude at each of related frequencies. This phenomenon is due to the geometry of BM. In this study, as the part of the research for the development of fully implantable artificial cochlea which is based on polymer membrane, parametric studies are performed to suggest the desirable artificial basilar membrane model which can detect wider range of frequency separation. The vibro-acoustic characteristics of the artificial basilar membrane are predicted through finite element analysis using commercial software Abaqus. Simulation results are verified by comparing with experimental results. Various geometric shapes of the BM and residual stress effects on the BM are investigated through the parametric study to enable a wider detectable frequency separation range.

The Neighborhood Effect in Korean Visual Word Recognition (한국어 시각단어재인에서 나타나는 이웃효과)

  • We investigated whether the first syllable plays an important role in lexical access in Korean visual word recognition. To do so, one lexical decision task (LDT) and two form primed LDT experiments examined the nature of the syllabic neighborhood effect. In Experiment 1, the syllabic neighborhood density and the syllabic neighborhood frequency was manipulated. The results showed that lexical decision latencies were only influenced by the syllabic neighborhood frequency. The purpose of experiment 2 was to confirm the results of experiment 1 with form-primed LDT task. The lexical decision latency was slower in form-related condition compared to form-unrelated condition. The effect of syllabic neighborhood density was significant only in form-related condition. This means that the first syllable plays an important role in the sub-lexical process. In Experiment 3, we conducted another form-primed LDT task manipulating the number of syllabic neighbors in words with higher frequency neighborhood. The interaction of syllabic neighborhood density and form relation was significant. This result confirmed that the words with higher frequency neighborhood are more inhibited by neighbors sharing the first syllable than words with no higher frequency neighborhood in the lexical level. These findings suggest that the first syllable is the unit of neighborhood and the unit of representation in sub-lexical representation is syllable in Korea.

Frequency response of film casting process

  • The sensitivity of the product to the ongoing sinusoidal disturbances of the process has been investigated in the film casting of viscoelastic polymer fluids using frequency response analysis. As demonstrated for fiber spinning process (Jung et al., 2002; Devereux and Denn, 1994), this frequency response analysis is useful for examining the process sensitivity and the stability of extensional deformation processes including film casting. The results of the present study reveal that the amplification ratios or gains of the process/product variables such as the cross-sectional area at the take-up to disturbances exhibit resonant peaks along the frequency regime as expected for the systems having hyperbolic characteristics with spilt boundary conditions (Friedly, 1972). The effects on the sensitivity results of two important parameters of film casting, i.e., the fluid viscoelasticity and the aspect ratio of the casting equipment have been scrutinized. It turns out that depending on the extension thinning or thickening nature of the fluid, increasing viscoelasticity results in enlargement or reduction of the sensitivity, respectively. As regards the aspect ratio, it has been found that an optimum value exists making the system least sensitive. The present study also confirms that the frequency response method produces results that corroborate well those by other methods like linear stability Analysis and transient solutions response. (Iyengar and Co, 1996; Silagy et al., 1996; Lee and Hyun, 2001).

  • Background: Tobacco use in various forms, including with Areca nut, causes several potentially malignant disorders. Many lesions may transform into oral squamous cell carcinoma. Although patients may be aware of the hazards of tobacco habits, the lesions by themselves are insidious in nature resulting in failure of patients to present to general dentists/specialists at early stages. Our aim was to study the types of habits prevalent in the region of Rourkela in Orissa and to assess the insidious nature of the lesions associated with these habits. Not many studies have been done from this part of India. Materials and Methods: A camp was conducted for habitual users of tobacco and its products, Areca nut and other mixed habit users. A thorough history was taken of the type, duration and frequency of habits, symptoms of patients along with clinical examination by a single examiner. The data was entered in detail into an excel sheet and analysed. Results: 54.7% had lesions and 60.9 % of them were asymptomatic and rest had mild burning sensation while eating. There was a very low awareness of the presence of lesions among the patients. Conclusions: There is a need to spread the awareness of the ill effects of the tobacco and other associated habits far and wide and more importantly educate the general public on the appearance of associated lesions as these are almost always insidious in nature. The patients can self-examine, detect lesions early when present and approach the dentist at the earliest opportunity.

Identifying the Determinants and the Dynamic Characteristics of ICT Non-Use: A Qualitative Study by Grounded Theory Methodolgy (정보기술 비사용의 결정요인과 동태적 성격의 규명: 근거이론방법론에 의한 질적 연구)

  • Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify the determinants of non-use and the dynamic nature of non-use by the qualitative research methodology, grounded theory methodology, as part of identifying the nature of non-use. Design/methodology/approach We applied the grounded theory methodology to a total of 23 college students, including non-users who are not currently using them, users with low intention to use them, and users with high intention to use. We extracted the codes related to the use and proposed the non-use dynamics conversion process based on the coding results. Findings First, the use of information technology can also promote the frequency of use, but can also lead to the use of negative attitudes which would fall in the state of non-use. Second, the user may have both positive and negative attitudes toward the current information technology. Third, if usage is dominated by habits, it is not so easy to change persistent use into an unused state. Fourth, factors that determine the use of specific information technology can be a factor in determining nonuse. This study has contributed to understand the essence of non - use as well as the nature of use, overcoming limitations of quantitative research approach and confirming possibility of grounded theory method in information system research.

  • The practical utilization of the frequency and normal mode equations of uniform Timoshenko beams such as those presented by Huang is not simple due to their highly trancendental nature. In this note largely simplified equations obtained for the fixed-fixed and the free-free boundary conditions, the modes of which are separable into symmetric modes and antisymmetric ones, are given. Numerical results obtains for six common-type boundary conditions show that the quantitative measure of the effect of rotary inertia and shear deformation on the natural frequency is greatly dependent upon the boundary conditions as well as the order number.

  • The unsteady nature of vortex structures has been investigated by a large eddy simulation (LES) in an axial flow fan with a shroud covering only the rear region of its rotor tip. The simulation shows that the tip vortex plays a major role in the structure and unsteady behavior of the vortical flow in the fan. The movements of the vortex structures induce high-pressure fluctuations on the rotor blade and in the blade passage. Frequency characteristics of the fluctuating pressure on the rotor blade are analyzed using wavelet transform. The dominant frequency of the real-time pressure selected at the high pressure fluctuation region corresponds well to that of the fluctuating rotor torque and the experimental result of fan noise. It is mainly generated due to the unsteady behavior of the vortical flow, such as the tip vortex and the leading edge separation vortex.

  • Historical interest in dielectric properties of agricultural products and definitions of dielectric terms and basic principles governing their influence on elelctromagnetic energy are presented briefly . The nature of dielectric properties variation with frequency, temperature , and product density is discussed, Graphical data on the dielectric properties of products are presented that illustrate the dependence of these properties on moisture content, frequency, temperature, and density. Applications microwave dielectric properties of agricultural products are cited that include radio-frequency (RF) and microwave heating for seed treatment, improvement of nutritional and keeping qualities of some products, and controlling insects in grain. Uses of dielectric properties for product quality measurement and the rapid determination of moisture content are described. Principle of moisture determination in bulk grain by RF and microwave measurements are briefly presented.

Estimation of Ocean Current Velocity near Incheon using Radarsat-1 SAR and HF-radar Data

  • This paper presents the results of the ocean surface current velocity estimation using 6 Radarsat-1 SAR images acquired in west coastal area near Incheon. We extracted the surface velocity from SAR images based on the Doppler shift approach in which the azimuth frequency shift is related to the motion of surface target in the radar direction. The Doppler shift was measured by the difference between the Doppler centroid estimated in the range-compressed, azimuth-frequency domain and the nominal Doppler centroid used during the SAR focusing process. The extracted SAR current velocities were statistically compared with the current velocities from the high frequency(HF) radar in terms of averages, standard deviations, and root mean square errors. The problem of the unreliable nominal Doppler centroid for the estimation of the SAR current velocity was corrected by subtracting the difference of averages between SAR and HF-radar current velocities from the SAR current velocity. The corrected SAR current velocity inherits the average of HF-radar data while maintaining high-resolution nature of the original SAR data.

Structural damage detection based on MAC flexibility and frequency using moth-flame algorithm

  • Vibration-based structural damage detection through optimization algorithms and minimization of objective function has recently become an interesting research topic. Application of various objective functions as well as optimization algorithms may affect damage diagnosis quality. This paper proposes a new damage identification method using Moth-Flame Optimization (MFO). MFO is a nature-inspired algorithm based on moth's ability to navigate in dark. Objective function consists of a term with modal assurance criterion flexibility and natural frequency. To show the performance of the said method, two numerical examples including truss and shear frame have been studied. Furthermore, Los Alamos National Laboratory test structure was used for validation purposes. Finite element model for both experimental and numerical examples was created by MATLAB software to extract modal properties of the structure. Mode shapes and natural frequencies were contaminated with noise in above mentioned numerical examples. In the meantime, one of the classical optimization algorithms called particle swarm optimization was compared with MFO. In short, results obtained from numerical and experimental examples showed that the presented method is efficient in damage identification.
