  • Weak form integral equations are developed to investigate the flapwise bending vibration of the rotating beams. Rayleigh and Eringen nonlocal elasticity theories are used to investigate the rotatory inertia and Size-dependency effects on the flapwise bending vibration of the rotating cantilever beams, respectively. Through repetitive integrations, the governing partial differential equations are converted into weak form integral equations. The novelty of the presented approach is the approximation of the mode shape function by a power series which converts the equations into solvable one. Substitution of the power series into weak form integral equations results in a system of linear algebraic equations. The natural frequencies are determined by calculation of the non-trivial solution for resulting system of equations. Accuracy of the proposed method is verified through several numerical examples, in which the influence of the geometry properties, rotatory inertia, rotational speed, taper ratio and size-dependency are investigated on the natural frequencies of the rotating beam. Application of the weak form integral equations has made the solution simpler and shorter in the mathematical process. Presented relations can be used to obtain a close-form solution for quick calculation of the first five natural frequencies of the beams with flapwise vibration and non-local effects. The analysis results are compared with those obtained from other available published references.

  • In this study, analytical and experimental modal analyses of a scaled bridge model are carried out to extract the dynamic characteristics such as natural frequency, mode shapes and damping ratios. For this purpose, a scaled bridge model is constructed in laboratory conditions. Three dimensional finite element model of the bridge is constituted and dynamic characteristics are determined, analytically. To identify the dynamic characteristics experimentally; Experimental Modal Analyses (ambient and forced vibration tests) are conducted to the bridge model. In the ambient vibration tests, natural excitations are provided and the response of the bridge model is measured. Sensitivity accelerometers are placed to collect signals from the measurements. The signals collected from the tests are processed by Operational Modal Analysis; and the dynamic characteristics of the bridge model are estimated using Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition and Stochastic Subspace Identification methods. In the forced vibration tests, excitation of the bridge model is induced by an impact hammer and the frequency response functions are obtained. From the finite element analyses, a total of 8 natural frequencies are attained between 28.33 and 313.5 Hz. Considering the first eight mode shapes, these modes can be classified into longitudinal, transverse and vertical modes. It is seen that the dynamic characteristics obtained from the ambient and forced vibration tests are close to each other. It can be stated that the both of Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition and Stochastic Subspace Identification methods are very useful to identify the dynamic characteristics of the bridge model. The first eight natural frequencies are obtained from experimental measurements between 25.00-299.5 Hz. In addition, the dynamic characteristics obtained from the finite element analyses have a good correlation with experimental frequencies and mode shapes. The MAC values obtained between 90-100% and 80-100% using experimental results and experimental-analytical results, respectively.

  • The NDIF method based on a sub-domain technique is introduced to extract highly accurate natural frequencies of arbitrarily shaped plates with the simply-supported boundary condition. The NDIF method, which was developed by the authors for the eigen-mode analysis of arbitrarily shaped plates with various boundary conditions, has the feature that it yields highly accurate natural frequencies thanks to its effective theoretical formulation, compared with other analytical methods or numerical methods(FEM and BEM). However, the NDIF method has the weak point that it can be applicable for only convex plates. It was revealed that the NDIF method offers very inaccurate natural frequencies or no solution for concave cavities. To overcome the weak point, the paper proposes the sub-domain method of dividing a concave plate into several convex domains. Finally, the validity of the proposed method is verified in various case studies, which indicate that natural frequencies obtained by the proposed method are very accurate compared to the exact method and FEM(ANSYS).

  • This paper is a continuation of the investigations started in the paper by Akbarov, S.D., Guliyev, H.H and Yahnioglu, N. (2016) "Natural vibration of the three-layered solid sphere with middle layer made of FGM: three-dimensional approach", Structural Engineering and Mechanics, 57(2), 239-263, to the case where the three-layered sphere is a hollow one. Three-dimensional exact field equations of elastodynamics are employed for investigation and the discrete-analytical method is employed for solution of the corresponding eigenvalue problem. The FGM is modelled as inhomogeneous for which the modulus of elasticity, Poison's ratio and density vary continuously through the inward radial direction according to power law distribution. Numerical results on the natural frequencies are presented and discussed. These results are also compared with the corresponding ones obtained in the previous paper by the authors. In particular, it is established that for certain harmonics and for roots of certain order, the values of the natural frequency obtained for the hollow sphere can be greater (or less) than those obtained for the solid sphere.

  • This paper presents unprecedented damped oscillation behaviours of a precast steel-concrete composite slab panel for track support. The steel-concrete composite slab track is an innovative slab track, a form of ballastless track which is becoming increasingly attractive to asset owners as they seek to reduce lifecycle costs and deal with increasing rail traffic speeds. The slender nature of the slab panel due to its reduced depth of construction makes it susceptible to vibration problems. The aim of the study is driven by the need to address the limited research available to date on the dynamic behaviour of steel-concrete composite slab panels for track support. Free vibration analysis of the track slab has been carried out using ABAQUS. Both undamped and damped eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes have been extracted using the Lancsoz method. The fundamental natural frequencies of the slab panel have been identified together with corresponding mode shapes. To investigate the sensitivity of the natural frequencies and mode shapes, parametric studies have been established, considering concrete strength and mass and steel's modulus of elasticity. This study is the world first to observe crossover phenomena that result in the inversion of the natural orders without interaction. It also reveals that replacement of the steel with aluminium or carbon fibre sheeting can only marginally reduce the natural frequencies of the slab panel.

  • In this paper, it is identified that high-level vibration of the single phase main power transformers shut down due to the mechanical fault. vibration sources of the SPR in the transformer's are identified and the SPR vibrations are reduced by structural modification. For vibration characteristic identification, vibration signals were measured with an accelerometer when the transformer is driving. These signals are presented in a FFT analysis in order to find the dependency of frequency components on the transformer. From finite element analyses and some experiments, it is also found that resonances occur because the natural frequencies of the SPR exist in usual driving range. To shift the natural frequencies outside the driving range, the SPR is modified by increasing stiffness. It is verified that considerable amounts of vibration are reduced by the structural modification.

  • Recently, mixers are being widely used in the water purification plant in order to increase the filtration efficiency. It has been found that a severe vibration was being felt on a upper structure of a mixer facility during steady state operation. The cause of the excessive vibration of the structure to which the mixer's shaft is supported has been evaluated through modal analysis on the shaft and vibration measurements during operation. The fundamental natural frequency of the mixer's shaft is found to be around 1.8 Hz and the main vibratory frequency around 30 Hz. It has been tuned out that the main vibratory frequency, 30 Hz is coincident with the fundamental holding frequency of the upper structure, and that the acceleration signal of the upper structure and the displacement signal of the mixer's shaft showed highly coherent to each other. Accordingly, it reveals that the main cause of the excessive vibration is due not to the mixer's vibration but to the natural frequency of the upper structure excited by flow turbulence.

  • When operating NC lathe, gear box which is equipped with gear train and spindle sometimes generates loud noise and excessive vibrations. In order to identify their causes, In this study, torsional and lateral vibration characteristics including critical speeds of the gear train-spindle system are first analyzed by using torsional and lateral vibration models of the gear train and shafts. Natural frequencies and modes of the gear box structure are also analyzed by impulse hammer test. Furthermore, measured vibration and noise signals are analyzed and compared with theoretical analysis results. At last it is concluded that the cause of the excessive mise and vibration is the resonance between gear meshing frequency including its side bands, shaft bending and torsional vibration frequencies, and the natural frequencies of th gear box structure. Consequently the noise and vibration levels are greatly reduced by avoiding resonance between them through the redesign of the gear module.

  • This study concerns about calculating exact natural frequencies of frames using a single variable shear deformation theory (SVSDT) which considers the parabolic shear stress distribution across the cross section. Free vibration analyses are performed for multi-bay, multi-storey and multi-bay multi-storey type frame structures. Dynamic stiffness formulations are derived and used to obtain first five natural frequencies of frames. Different beam and column cross sections are considered to reveal their effects on free vibration analysis. The calculated natural frequencies are tabulated with the results obtained using Euler-Bernoulli Beam Theory (EBT) and Timoshenko Beam Theory (TBT). Moreover, the effects of inner and outer columns on natural frequencies are compared for multi-bay frames. Several mode shapes are plotted.
