In this study, the Al-rich AlTiSiN thin films that consisted of TiN/AlSiN nano-multilayers were deposited on the steel substrate by magnetron sputtering, and their high-temperature oxidation behavior was investigated, which has not yet been adequately studied to date. Since the oxidation behavior of the films depends sensitively on the deposition method and deposition parameters which affect their crystallinity, composition, stoichiometry, thickness, surface roughness, grain size and orientation, the oxidation studies under various conditions are imperative. AlTiSiN nano-multilayer thin films were deposited on a tool steel substrate, and their oxidation behavior of was investigated between 600 and $1000^{\circ}C$ in air. Since the amount of Al which had a high affinity for oxygen was the largest in the film, an ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3-rich$ scale formed, which provided good oxidation resistance. The outer surface scale consisted of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ incoporated with a small amount of Ti, Si, and Fe. Below this outer surface scale, a thin ($Al_2O_3$, $TiO_2$, $SiO_2$)-intermixed scale formed by the inwardly diffusing oxygen. The film oxidized slower than the $TiO_2-forming$ kinetics and TiN films, but faster than ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3-forming$ kinetics. During oxidation, oxygen from the atmosphere diffused inwardly toward the reaction front, whereas nitrogen and the substrate element of iron diffused outwardly to a certain extent.
A method for fabrication of nano-scale GaN structure by inductively coupled plasma etching is proposed, exploiting a thermal dewetting of Pt thin film as an etch mask. The nano-scale Pt metal islands were formed by the dewetting of 2-dimensional film on $SiO_2$ dielectric materials during rapid thermal annealing process. For the case of 30 nm thick Pt films, pattern formation and dewetting was initiated at temperatures greater $600^{\circ}C$. Controlling the annealing temperature and time as well as the thickness of the Pt metal film affected the size and density of Pt islands. The activation energy for the formation of Pt metal island was calculated to be 23.2 KJ/mole. The islands show good resistance to dry etching by a $CF_4$ based plasma for dielectric etching indicating that the metal islands produced by dewetting are suitable for use as an etch mask in the fabrication of nano-scale structures.
The purpose of this paper is to study the geometrically nonlinear free vibration of functionally graded nano/micro beams (FGNBs) based on the modified couple stress theory. For practical applications, some analytical expressions of nonlinear frequencies for FGNBs on a nonlinear Pasternak foundation are developed. Hamilton's principle is employed to obtain nonlinear governing differential equations in the context of both Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories for a comprehensive investigation. The modified continuum theory contains one material length scale parameter to capture the size effect. The variation of two-constituent material along the thickness is modeled using Reddy's power-law. Also, the Mori-Tanaka method as an accurate homogenization technique is implemented to estimate the effective material properties of the FGNBs. The results are presented for both hinged-hinged and clamped-clamped boundary conditions. The nonlinear partial differential equations are reduced to ordinary differential equations using Galerkin method and then the powerful method of homotopy analysis is utilized to obtain the semi-analytical solutions. Eventually, the presented analytical expressions are used to examine the influences of the length scale parameter, material gradient index, and elastic foundation on the nonlinear free vibration of FGNBs.
A series of molecular dynamic (MD), finite element (FE) and ab initio simulations are carried out to establish suitable modeling schemes for the continuum-based analysis of aluminum matrix nanocomposites reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). From a comparison of the MD with FE models and inferences based on bond structures and electron distributions, we propose that the effective thickness of a CNT wall for its continuum representation should be related to the graphitic inter-planar spacing of 3.4${\AA}$. We also show that shell element representation of a CNT structure in the FE models properly simulated the carbon-carbon covalent bonding and long-range interactions in terms of the load-displacement behaviors. Estimation of the effective interfacial elastic properties by ab initio simulations showed that the in-plane interfacial bond strength is negligibly weaker than the normal counterpart due to the nature of the weak secondary bonding at the CNT-Al interface. Therefore, we suggest that a third-phase solid element representation of the CNT-Al interface in nanocomposites is not physically meaningful and that spring or bar element representation of the weak interfacial bonding would be more appropriate as in the cases of polymer matrix counterparts. The possibility of treating the interface as a simply contacted phase boundary is also discussed.
The cycle performance of Ti-Si alloy anode material for Li-ion batteries has been investigated as a function of loading level of electrode using a nodule type of substrate, in which the current collector of flat foil is also used for comparison. The Ti-Si alloy powders are prepared by mechanical alloying method. The electrodes with the nodule type of current collector exhibit enhanced cycling performance compared to those using the flat foil because the alloy particles are more strongly adhered to substrate and the stress caused by lithiation and delithiation reaction can be effectively relaxed by nodule-type morphology. It appears, however, that the cycle performance is critically dependent on the loading level of electrode, even when the nodule type of current collector is applied. With high loading level, cracks are initiated at surface of electrode due to a steep stress gradient through the electrode thickness during cycling, leading to capacity fading.
Cadmium selenide is one of the group IIb-VI compounds, which is the promising semiconductor material due to its wide range of technological applications in optoelectronic devices such as photoelectrochemical cells, solid state solar cells, thin film photoconductors etc. CdSe has optical band gap of 1.7-1.8eV and proper conduction band edge for water splitting. CdSe films are coated with small thickness(20-50nm) nanocrystalline $TiO_2$ film by electrodeposition or chemical bath deposition methods and PEC properties of CdSe and CdSe/$TiO_2$ sandwich structure are studied. The photoactivity of CdSe and CdSe/$TiO_2$ films deposited on titanium substrate is studied in aqueous electrolyte of 1M NaOH solution. Photocurrent and photovoltage obtained were of the order of 2-4 mA/$cm^2$ and 0.5V, respectively, under the intensity of illumination of 100 mW/$cm^2$.
The transfer assembly (or transfer printing) technique is a promising method for fabricating multi-scale structures on various substrates including semiconductors and polymers, and has been applied to fabrication of flexible devices with superior performance to conventional organic flexible devices. The mechanical behaviors of the structures fabricated by the transfer assembly is a very important information for design and reliability evaluation purpose, but the measurement of the behaviors is difficult since their critical-dimensions are very tiny. In this study, Au films with nano-scale thickness were fabricated on a silicon substrate and their mechanical properties were measured using micro-tensile test. The Au films on the silicon substrate were then transferred to a PDMS substrate using the transfer assembly technique. Self-assembled monolayer (SAM) with a thiol group was used to enhance the transfer of Au films, and the mechanical behaviors were characterized using wrinkle-based test. The test results from micro-tensile and wrinkle-based test are compared to each other, and their implication to the transfer assembly technique is discussed.
$Y_2Ti_2O_7$ nanoparticles (0.3 mol%) have been successfully synthesized by the co-precipitation process. The samples, adjusted to pH7 with ammonia solution as catalyst and calcined at $700{\sim}900^{\circ}C$, exhibit very fine particles with close to spherical shape and average size of 10-30 nm. It was possible to control the size of the synthesized $Y_2Ti_2O_7$ particles by manipulating the conditions. The $Y_2Ti_2O_7$ nanoparticles were coated on a glass substrate by a dipping coating process with inorganic binder. The $Y_2Ti_2O_7$ solution coated on the glass substrate had excellent adhesion of 5B; pencil hardness test results indicated an excellent hardness of 6H. The thickness of the thick film was about $30{\mu}m$. Decomposition of MB on the $Y_2Ti_2O_7$ thin film shows that the photocatalytic properties were excellent.

Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) method using hard x-ray at 5.46 keV was applied to study assembly of Ni and Ni oxide nano structures formed on a Si3N4 membrane. Density distribution of Ni nano-particles was obtained quantitatively with about 15 nm lateral resolution by reconstructing images from the speckle diffraction pattern. In addition, reconstructed images of nickel oxide particles indicated that Ni atoms diffuse out during the oxidation process leaving pores inside the nickel oxide crust. Furthermore, we recognize that really weak phase object, less than 5 nm thickness of Ni residues, can be reconstructed due to the reference particles. We achieved quantitative information of nanometer sized materials and demonstrate the effect of reference particles by using hard x-ray coherent diffractive imaging method.
