  • The development of mechanical alloying (MA)-oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) heat-resistant ferritic alloys of Fe-12%Cr with W, Ti and Y₂O₃additions were carried out. Fe-12%Cr alloys with 3%W, 0.4%Ti and 0.25% Y₂O₃additions showed a much finer and more uniform dispersion of oxide particles among the alloy system studied. Nano-sized oxides dispersed in the alloys suppress the grain growth during annealing at a high temperature and resulted in the remarkable improvement of creep strength. The oxide phase was identified as a complex oxide type of Y-Ti-O.

  • Solid state grain growth (SSCG) is a method of growing large single crystals from seed single crystals by abnormal grain growth in a small-grained matrix. During grain growth, pores are often trapped in the matrix and remain in single crystals. Aerosol deposition (AD) is a method of manufacturing films with almost full density from nano grains by causing high energy collision between substrates and ceramic powders. AD and SSCG are used to grow single crystals with few pores. BaTiO3 films are coated on (100) SrTiO3 seeds by AD. To generate grain growth, BaTiO3 films are heated to 1,300 ℃ and held for 10 h, and entire films are grown as single crystals. The condition of grain growth driving force is ∆Gmax < ∆Gc ≤ ∆Gseed. On the other hand, the condition of grain growth driving force in BaTiO3 AD films heat-treated at 1,100 and 1,200 ℃ is ∆Gc < ∆Gmax, and single crystals are not grown.

  • Nano structure $Bi_2Te_3$ films were deposited on (100) GaAs substrates using a modified MOCVD system and the effect of growth parameters on the structural properties were investigated. Different from conventional MOCVD systems, our reactor consist of pressure control unit and two heating zones ; one for formation of nano-sized particles and the other for the growth of nano particles on substrates. By using this instrument we successfully grow $Bi_2Te_3$ films with nano-grain size. The film grown at high reactor pressure has large grain size. On the contrast, the grain size decreases with a decrease in pressure of the reactor. Here, we introduce new growth methods of nano-grain structured $Bi_2Te_3$ films for high thermoelectric figure of merit.

  • Novel soft magnetic materials can be achieved by altering material properties such as morphology, composition, crystallinity, and grain size of soft magnetic alloys. Especially, magnetic properties (i.e., saturation magnetization, coarcivity) of soft magnetics are significantly affected by grain boundaries which act as a control of magnetic domain wall movement. Thus, we herein develop a two-step electroless plating method to control morphology and grain size of FeCo films for excellent magnetic properties. Accordingly, the chemical composition to control the degree of polarization of FeCo alloys was altered by electroless deposition parameters; for example, electrolyte concentration and temperature. The grain size and crystallinity of FeCo alloys was dramatically affected by the reaction temperature because the grain growth mechanism dominantly occurs at $90^{\circ}C$ where as the neucleation only happens at $50^{\circ}C$. By simply controlling the temperature, the micron-sized FeCo grains embedded FeCo film was synthesized where the large grains allow high magnetization originated from larger magnetic domain with low corecivity and the nano-sized grains allow excellent soft magnetic properties due to the magnetic correlation length.

  • In purpose of introducing the inverse magnetostrictive properties into the structural ceramics, $Al_2O_3$ based nanocomposites dispersed with nano-sized Ni-Co particles were studied. The composites were fabricated by the hydrogen reduction and hot-pressing of $Al_2O_3$ and NiO-CoO mixed powders. The mixtures were prepared by using Ni- and Co-nitrate $(Ni(NO_3)_2\;{\cdot}\;6H_2O\;and\;Co(NO_3)_2\;{\cdot}\6H_2O)$ as source materials for the Ni-Co particles. Microstructural observations revealed that nano-sized Ni-Co particles were dispersed homogeneously at $Al_2O_3$ grain boundaries. High strength above 1 GPa was obtained for the $Al_2O_3/10$ wt% Ni-Co nanocomposite fabricated by a controlled powder preparation process. The inverse magnetostrictive response to applied stress was obtained due to the presence of dispersed Ni-Co particles, which indicates a possibility to incorporate new functions into the structural ceramics without loosing the mechanical properties.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate microstructures and mechanical properties of nano-sized Ti-35 wt.%Nb-7 wt.%Zr-10 wt.%CPP composite fabricated by high energy mechanical milling (HEMM) and pulse current activated sintering (PCAS). Grain growth of the mechanically milled powder was prevented by performing PCAS. The principal advantages of calcium phosphate materials include: similarity in composition to the bone mineral, bioactivity, osteoconductivity and ability to form a uniquely strong interface with bone. The hardness and wear resistance property of nano-sized Ti-35 wt.%Nb-7 wt.%Zr-10 wt.%CPP composites increased with increasing milling time because of decreased grain-size of sintered composites.

  • Microstructural changes and hardness variations in STS 304 steel have been investigated during the processes of carbide dispersion (CD) carburization; carburization, austenitization, subzero treatment and tempering. The carbon content of the surface layer increased up to maximum 4.0% after carburization, and the content was homogenized with the value of 2.3% to the $95{\mu}m$ from the surface after austenitization. The carbide appeared during CD carburization process was $Cr_7C_3$ type, which was composed network carbides along the austenite grain boundaries, square type carbides in the interior of the grain and fine nano-sized carbides. The fine nano-sized carbides precipitated at the austenitization stage and possibly subzero treatment stage were coarsened after tempering at $200^{\circ}C$, resulting the hardness decrease. The tempered steel without subzero treatment increased hardness with increasing time due to the continuous precipitation of fine carbides during tempering. The nano-sized carbide appeared square type morphology.

  • Influence of Zr addition on grain stability at elevated temperatures has been investigated for extruded pure Mg and Mg-0.25%Zr alloy. The grain size of pure Mg increases rapidly with increasing annealing temperature when isochronally annealed for 60 min from 573 to 773 K, whereas the grains are stable up to 723 K for the Zr-containing alloy. The activation energies for grain growth ($E_g$) at this temperature range were determined as 75.3 and 105.9 kJ/mole for the pure Mg and Mg-0.25%Zr alloy, respectively. TEM observations on the annealed Mg-Zr samples revealed that higher thermal stability and higher activation energy for grain growth resulting from Zr addition in Mg may well be associated with the restriction of grain growth by nano-sized Zr particles distributed in the microstructure.

  • Nanobeams are widely used as a structural element for nanodevices and nanomachines. The development of nano-sized machines depends on proper understanding of mechanical behavior of these nano-sized beam elements. Small length scales such as lattice spacing between atoms, surface properties, grain size etc. are need to be considered when applying any classical continuum model. In this study, Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory is incorporated into classical beam model considering the effects of axial extension and the shear deformation to capture unique static behavior of the nanobeams under continuum mechanics theory. The governing differential equations are obtained for curved beams and solved exactly by using the initial value method. Circular uniform beam with concentrated loads are considered. The displacements, slopes and the stress resultants are obtained analytically. A detailed parametric study is conducted to examine the effect of the nonlocal parameter, mechanical loadings, opening angle, boundary conditions, and slenderness ratio on the static behavior of the nanobeam.

  • Recent development of ultrafine grained (UFG) low carbon steels by using equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and their room temperature tensile properties are reviewed, focusing on the strategies overcoming their inherent mechanical drawbacks. In addition to ferrite grain refinement, when proper post heat treatments are imposed, carbon atom dissolution from pearlitic cementite during ECAP can be utilized for microstructural modification such as uniform distribution of nano-sized cementite particles or microalloying element carbides inside UFG ferrite grains and fabrication of UFG ferrite/martensite dual phase steel. The utilization of nano-sized particles is effective on improving thermal stability of UFG low carbon ferrite/pearlite steel but less effective on improving its tensile properties. By contrast, UFG ferrite/martensite dual phase steel exhibits an excellent combination of ultrahigh strength, large uniform elongation and extensive strain hardenability.
