  • We demonstrate the growth of a sheet-like ZnO membrane on ZnO nano rod layers. The growth process is composed of 3 steps of ZnO seed formation, ZnO nano rod growth and sheet-like ZnO membrane formation on those nano rods. To confirm the fundamental growth mechanism, the lattice structures of each step were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurement. Analysis of the relation between the texture coefficient and the surface shape of the ZnO membrane on the ZnO nano rods shows that the surface morphology of ZnO nano structures can be controlled using the temperature of the growing solution and the concentration of the chemical solution.

  • Cobalt nano-rods were fabricated using a template-free electrochemical-deposition process. The structure of cobalt electro-deposits strongly depends on the electrolyte composition and on the density of the applied current. In particular, as the content of boric acid increased in the electrolyte, deposits of semi-spherical nuclei formed, and then grew into one-dimensional nano-rods. From analysis of the electro-deposits created under the conditions of continuous and pulsed current, it is suggested that the distribution of the active species around the electrode/electrolyte interface, and their transport, might be an important factor affecting the shape of the deposits. When transport of the active species was suppressed by lowering the deposition temperature, more of the well-defined nano-rod structures were obtained. The optimal conditions for the preparation of well-defined nano-rods were determined by observing the morphologies resulting from different deposition conditions. The maximum height of the cobalt nano-rods created in this work was $1{\mu}m$ and it had a diameter of 200 nm. Structural analysis proved that the nano-rods have preferred orientations of (111).

  • We investigated photoluminescence characteristics of ZnO nano needle-like rods grown on a c-plane $AL_2O_3$ substrate by the hot wall epitaxy method. The nano-rods were vertically well aligned along the ZnO c-axis. The diameters of the ZnO nano-rods ranged from 20 nm to 30 nm and their lengths were between 600 and 700 nm. In the photoluminescence spectrum at 10 K, the exciton emission bound to the neutral donor dominated while defect related emission was weakly observed. With a further increase of temperature, the free exciton emission appeared and eventually became dominant at room temperature.

  • The lanthanum oxide nano-rods were grown on the surface of 3 mol% Yttria Partially Stabilized Zirconia ceramic composite which containing Lanthanum-Strontium Manganate, $La_xSr_yMn_zO_3$ for the purpose of endorsing the antistatic property. The diameter and the aspect ratio of the nano-rods were greatly changed according to the growing condition. With the optical microscope observation, the nano-rods shining brightly. It was confirmed that the major components of nano-rods is La, and Sr, Mn, Si are minor components by SEM and TEM analyses.

  • In this work, the Co-doped ZnO rods were prepared by the hydrothermal method. The size of these rods can be changed from micro-size to nano-size by using different solutions during the preparation. The results of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) showed that the as-prepared nano-sized Co-doped rods have single-crystal structure. The polarized Raman experiments were presented on an individual micro-sized Co-doped ZnO rod in the $X(YY)\vec{X}$, $X(ZY)\vec{X}$ and $X(ZZ)\vec{X}$ configurations, the results of polarized Raman indicated that these rods are crystallized and their growth direction is parallel to c-axis.

  • The improvement of critical current properties of $REBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (REBCO) coated conductors by introducing artificial pinning centers (APCs) is examined with respect to the field-angle anisotropy, high-field performance and relaxation property with time. Nano-rods along the c-axis introduced by PLD method and isotropic nano-particles introduced by TFA-MOD method are treated. The theoretical analysis is also shown to understand the effect of APCs quantitatively. The effects of superconducting layer thickness that influences the high-field performance and relaxation property are also discussed. It is shown that the upper critical field, which is another important factor to determine the high-field property, can be improved by introduction of APCs through electron scattering at interfaces with the superconducting matrix. The optimum critical current property can be obtained by properly designing the morphology and number density of APCs and the superconducting layer thickness.

  • Vibration of axially functionally graded nano-rods and beams is investigated. It is assumed that the material properties change along the rod and beam length. The Ritz method with algebraic polynomials is used in the formulation of the problems. Stress gradient elasticity theory is utilized in order to include the nonlocal effects. Frequencies are obtained for different boundary conditions, geometrical and material properties. Nonlocal parameter is assumed as changing linearly or quadratically along the length of the nanostructure. Frequencies are compared to constant nonlocal parameter cases and considerable differences are observed between constant and variable nonlocal parameter cases. Mode shapes in various cases are depicted in order to explain the effects of axial grading.

  • We report a carbothermal reduction process for massive synthesis of monolithic W$_{18}$O$_{49}$ phase from tungsten oxide in the presence of carbon source. Carbon black powder was used as a carbon source and added to WO$_3$ by 40 weight percent. Bundles of W$_{18}$O$_{49}$ rods were formed over the temperature range of 80$0^{\circ}C$$^{\circ}C$ to 90$0^{\circ}C$. Pure W$_{18}$O$_{49}$ bundles could be separated from the mixture of W$_{18}$O$_{49}$ and residual carbon black powder. Field emission character of W$_{18}$O$_{49}$ phase was determined using the extracted W$_{18}$O$_{49}$ rods. Flat lamp fabricated from the W$_{18}$O$_{49}$ rods showed the turn-on field of 9.3 V/${\mu}m$.

  • An approach to achieving of spatially homogeneous, ordered ensemble of semiconductor quantum rods in polymer film of polyvinyl butyral is reported. The CdSe/ZnS quantum rods are embedded to the polymer film. Obtained film is stretched up to four times to its initial length. A concentration of quantum rods in the samples is around $2{\times}10^{-5}$ M. The absorption spectra, obtained in the light with orthogonal polarization, confirm the occurrence of spatial ordering in a quantum rod ensemble. Anisotropy of the optical properties in the ordered quantum rod ensemble is examined. The presented method can be used as a low-cost solution for preparing the nanostructured materials with anisotropic properties and high concentration of nanocrystals.
