The electroless plating process largely consists of substrate cleaning, seed formation (activator formation), and electroless plating. The most widely used activator in the seed formation step is Pd, and Sn ions are used to facilitate the formation of this Pd seed layer. This is problematic because the Sn ions interfere with the reduction of Cu ions during electroless plating; thus, the Sn ions must be removed by a hydrochloric acid cleaning process. This method is also expensive due to the use of Pd. In this study, Cu electroless plating was performed by forming a seed layer using a silver nanosol instead of Pd and Sn. The effects of the Ag nanosol concentration in the pretreatment solution and the pretreatment time on the thickness and surface morphology of the Cu layer were investigated. The degrees of adhesion to the substrate were similar for the electroless-plated Cu layers formed by conventional Pd activation and those formed by the Ag nanosol.
Recently UV laser is widely used to process micro parts using various materials such as polymers, metals and ceramics because it has a very high intensity at the focused spot area. It is generally known that there are still some difficulties for alumina($Al_2O_3$) ceramics to directly make micro patterns like holes and lines on the surface of working material using 355nm UV laser because the alumina has a very low absorption coefficient at that wavelength. But nowadays new alumna with nano-porous holes is developed and applied to advanced micro functional parts of IT, BT and BT industries. In this paper, we are going to show the mechanism of photo-thermal ablation for nano-porous ceramics. Inside hole there is a lot of multiple reflections along the depth of hole. Experimentally we can find the micro hole drilling and micro grooving on the surface of nano-porous alumina.
In our report a relatively simple process for fast nano-texturing of p-type(100) CZ- silicon surface using silver catalyzed wet chemical etching in aqueous hydrofluoric acid (HF) and hydrogen peroxide solution($H_2O_2$) at room temperature. The wafers were saw-damaged by NaOH(6 wt%) at $60^{\circ}C$ for 150s. To obtain a nano-structured black surface, a thin layer of silver with thickness of 1 - 10 nm was deposited on the surfaces by evaporation system. After this process the samples were etched in HF : $H_2O_2$ : $H_2O$ = 1:5:10 at room temperature for 80s - 220s. Due to the local catalytic of the Ag clusters, this treatment results in the nano-scale texturing on the surface. This resulted in average reflectance values less than 9% after the silver on the surface of the wafers were removed.
MmSH injection molding method to fabricate light guiding plate with nano-sized pattern was developed. A stamper was fabricated through photolithography, dry etching, and electroplating processes. While the stamper with nano-sized pattern in mold was kept at $180^{\circ}C$ during injection process, that was cooled down to $90^{\circ}C$ quickly after the injection process. The nano-sized pattern on light guiding plate processed by MmSH injection molding method was well transferred from stamper compared to that processed by conventional injection molding process.
Silica nano-powder (SNP) is an inorganic material able to provide high-performance in various fields because of its multiple functions. Methods used to synthesize high purity SNP, include crushing silica minerals, vapor reaction of silica chloride, and a sol-gel process using TEOS and sodium silicate solution. The sol-gel process is the cheapest method for synthesis of SNP, and was used in this study. First, we investigated the shape and the size of the silica-powder particles in relation to the variation of HCl and sodium silicate concentrations. After drying, the shape of nano-silica powder differed in relation to variations in the HCl concentration. As the pH of the solution increased, so did the density of crosslinking. Initially, there was NaCl in the SNP. To increase its purity, we adopted a washing process that included centrifugation and filtration. After washing, the last of the NaCl was removed using DI water, leaving only amorphous silica powder. The purity of nano-silica powder synthesized using sodium silicate was over 99.6%.
The miniaturization technologies are perceived as potential key technologies of the future. They will bring about completely different ways in which people and machines interact with the physical world. However, at the present time, the primary technologies used fur miniaturization are dependent on the microelectronic fabrication techniques. The principal shortcomings associated with such techniques are related to the inability of to produce arbitrary three-dimensional features not only in electronics but also in a wide range of metallic materials. In this paper, a ultramicro-stereolithography system assisted with a femto-second laser was developed to fabricate the arbitrary three-dimensional nano/micro-scaled features. In the developed process, a femto-second laser is projected according to CAD data on a photosensitive monomer resin, it induces polymerization of the liquid resin. After the polymerization, a droplet of ethanol is dropped to remove the liquid resin and then the polymerized nano-scaled features only remain. By a newly developed process, miniature devices for an extremely wide range of applications would become a technologically feasible reality. Some of nano/micro-scaled features as examples were fabricated to prove the usefulness of this study at the fundamental stage.
This paper addresses effects of nanoscale structures on structural colors of micropatterned transparent substrate by light diffraction. Structural colors is widely investigated because they present colors without any chemical pigments. Typically structural colors is presented by diffraction of light on a micropatterned surface or by multiple interference of light on a surface containing a periodic or quasi-periodic nano-structures. In this paper, each structural colors induced by quasi-periodic nano-structures, periodic micro-structures, and nano/micro dual structures is measured in order to investigate effects of nanoscale and microscale structures on structural colors in the transparent substrate. Using pre-fabricated pattern mold and hot-embossing process, nanoscale and microscale structures are replicated on the transparent PMMA(Poly methyl methacrylate) substrate. Nanoscale and microscale pattern molds are prepared by anodic oxidation process of aluminum sheet and by reactive ion etching process of silicon wafer, respectively. Structural colors are captured by digital camera, and their optical transmittance spectrum are measured by UV/visible spectrometer. From experimental results, we found that nano-structures provide monotonic colors by multiple interference, and micro-structures induce iridescent colors by diffraction of light. Structural colors is permanent and unchangeable, thus it can be used in various application field such as security, color filter and so on.
Due to the high usage of ABS in industries, such as aerospace, auto, recreational devices, boat, submarines, etc., the purpose of this project was to find a way to weld this material, which gives advantages, such as affordable, high speed, and good connection quality. In this experimental project, the friction welding method was applied with parameters such as numerical control (NC) machine with two different speeds and three cross-sections, including a flat surface, cone, and step. After the end of the welding process, samples were then applied for both tensile and bending tests of materials, and the results showed that, with increasing the machining velocity Considering of samples, the friction of the surface increased and then caused to increase in the surface temperature. Considering mentioned contents, the melting temperature of composite materials increased. This can give a chance to have a better combination of Nanomaterial to base melted materials. Thus, the result showed that, with increasing the weight percentage (wt %) of Nanomaterials contents, and machining velocity, the mechanical behavior of welded area for all three types of samples were just increased. This enhancement is due to the better melting process on the welded area of different Nano contents; also, the results showed that the shape of the welding area could play a significant role, and by changing the shape, the results also changed drastically.A better shape for the welding process was dedicated to the step surface.
Ultra-fine planing and micro punching are separately used for improving surface roughness and machining dot patterns, respectively, of metal molds. If these separate machining processes are applied for machining of identical molds, there could be an aligning mismatch between the machine tool and the mold. A hybrid machining system combining ultra-fine planing and micro punching was newly developed in this study in order to solve this mismatch; hybrid process technology was also developed for machining dot patterns on a mirror surface of a metal mold. The hybrid machining system has X, Y, and Z axes, and a cam axis for ultra-fine planing. The cam axis and attachable and removable solenoid actuators for micro punching can make large and small sizes of dot patterns, respectively. Ultra-fine planing was applied in the first place to improve the surface roughness of a metal mold; the measured surface roughness was about 20nm. Then, micro punching was applied to machine dot patterns on the same mold. It was possible to control the diameter of the dot patterns by changing the input voltage of the solenoid actuator. Before machining, severe inhomogeneous plastic deformation around the machined dot patterns was also removed by annealing heat treatment. Therefore, it was verified that metal molds with dots patterns for optical products can be machined using a hybrid machining system and the hybrid process technology developed in this study.
