Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between trunk control and pulmonary function and respiratory muscle strength in stroke patients. Methods: This study included 30 patients who had been clinically diagnosed with strokes, and trunk control abilities were measured using the trunk impairment scale (TIS). The subjects were classified into a group with high trunk control ability (TIS score ${\geq}20$) and a group with low trunk control ability (TIS score < 20). The patients' forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), peak expiratory flow (PEF), maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) were measured. To compare the pulmonary function and respiratory muscle strength between the two groups, the measurement data were analyzed using an independent T-test, and the relationship between TIS and respiratory function was analyzed using a Pearson correlation. Results: The high trunk control ability group had significantly higher pulmonary function and respiratory muscle strength than the low trunk control ability group. Significant positive correlations were found between trunk control and FVC, FEV1, PEF, MIP, and MEP. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that trunk control affects pulmonary function and respiratory muscle strength in stroke patients.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze articles published in the Journal of Korean Academy of Fundamental Nursing from 2001 to 2007. Method: Three hundred articles were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The focus was on research type, methodolgy and keywords. Results: Thirty percent of the research was supported financially. Ninety-four percent was quantitative research and of these the majority were surveys (73.2%). The rate of adoption for hypotheses in experimental studies were 55.07% but only 3% of the research included conceptual framework. The most common settings for data collection were clinical settings (51.99%), followed by community settings (43.71%). For data analysis, descriptive statistics (27.5%), t-test (17.1%), ANOVA (15.3%) and chi-square (7.9%) were most frequently used. Keywords were categorized into four nursing metaparadigms : human-beings, health, nursing, and environment. The most frequently used domain was health. Conclusion: The number of research papers published in the Journal of Korean Academy of Fundamental Nursing has increased and the quality has improved compared with articles published before 2001 year. Research topics varied and were mostly conducted on the basis of logical positivism.
The overall goal of this study was to examine the feasibility of predicting firmness of pear fruit by analyzing laser-induced light backscattering images. Thirty-five image analysis characteristics extracted from the laser-induced light backscattering images were used to build partial least squares regression (PLSR) models for predicting firmness of pear fruit. Experiments were conducted with three sets of pear samples which were in same "Shingo" cultivar, harvested in a same season, but produced in different counties. In every experiments with fruit samples produced in a same county, the correlation coefficients of prediction ($r_p$) and root mean square errors of prediction (RMSEP) of the models were 0.550~0.761 and 4.039~6.154 N, respectively. In an experiment with mixed fruit samples produced in different counties, the $r_p$ and RMSEP of the model were 0.669 and 5.02 N, respectively. The experiment results indicate that the analysis of laser-induced light backscattering images could be a useful tool for predicting firmness of pear fruit nondestructively.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the content related to nosocomial infection control in the course on Fundamentals of Nursing. Method: Participants were 49 faculty who were teaching courses in Fundamentals of Nursing in universities and colleges in Korea. The questionnaire was composed of 55 items related to nosocomial infection control. Results: Eighteen items out of 55 items were taught in more than 80% of the universities and colleges. These included principles of infection control, principles and effect of hand washing, method of hand washing, hand scrubs, and donning sterile gown and gloves. Conclusion: The most effective interventions for infection control: including asepsis, hand washing, infection control for urinary catheterization, and infection control for IV sites were taught in most universities and colleges. However, the time assigned for teaching these items and the importance placed on practice were not considered sufficient.
This study aims to explore group inquiry using science writing heuristic in elementary school science. We observed and examined what elementary students experienced in their science classes and moreover how they used their data to support their claims in the view point of scientific epistemology. The research question of this study is 'what is the result of coherence measurement for figuring out the relationship between argument and ground in group inquiry activity?'. To solve the study question, one fifth-grade class at an elementary school was selected. Four lessons in group inquiry using a worksheet of science writing heuristic were videotaped and transcribed. It was found that the hours of group inquiry when students can discuss meaningfully occupied approximately 37 to 45%. When measuring coherence in each lesson by developing a scale from one to five to estimate the coherence of the work sheet designed, the total average was 3.424. It implicated that students had their claims supported by some of their evidences. Although the figure was not enough to assist that they found strong bonds between their claims and data, they started to move forward to epistemological approach in their science lab works.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the nature the research trends of articles published in the Journal of Korean Academy of Fundamentals of Nursing (JKAFN). Method: Comparison analysis between articles in JKAFN (Volume 13, Number 1-3) and articles in the Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing (Volume 36, Number 1-3, 5-7) based on knowledge development classification was used to identify the nature of research trends in JKAFN. Results: Based on comparison with Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing, research trends in JKAFN were dominant; in personal knowledge in the pattern of knowing in nursing, in the desiderative focus in cognitive needs for nursing epistemology, in advancing of various aspects of nursing in the focus of knowledge, and practice domain in the domains for nursing. Conclusion: The major focuses on research trends in JKAFN were nursing practice, actions of nurses in practice and practice guideline applicable in nursing education.
Background: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is still difficult to diagnose in the field of chronic pain management. CRPS is diagnosed by purely clinical criteria based on the characteristic signs and symptoms, which have to be differentiated from similar pain conditions like posttraumatic neuropathic pain. Until now, there has been a lack of objective diagnostic tools to confirm the diagnosis of CRPS. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of a three phase bone scan (TBS) for making the diagnosis of CRPS. Methods: A total of 121 patients who had been diagnosed with CRPS were evaluated. All the patients were examined by performing a TBS as a part of the diagnostic work-up. A diffuse increased tracer uptake on the delayed image (phase III) was defined as a positive finding for CRPS. Results: Forty-one patients (33.9%) out of 121 showed the positive results on the TBS. The patients with a duration of pain of less than 24 months had a significantly higher positive result (43.4%) on the TBS than did the patients with duration of pain longer than 24 months (12.1%). Conclusions: A TBS could give a better objective result for diagnosing CRPS for patients with a shorter duration of pain and a TBS gives little information for the diagnosis of CRPS in patients with a duration of pain longer than 24 months.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the needs of instructors for developing self-help and aquatic exercise programs of Korean Rheumatology Health Professionals Society (KRHPS). Data were collected by self-administered questionnaires via mail for 63 out of 248 certified instructors from KRHPS. Authors analyzed the data based upon following 3 criteria, 1) demographical data of the instructors, 2) content of the programs, 3) evaluation of arthritis self-help and aquatic exercise program. As a result, most of respondents satisfied with the two programs in general, but they need some modification of the program in partly. They need more information about practical method of exercise, complementary theray, and treatment of arthritis. Also they proposed developing more interesting exercise program which can be learn with ease and enjoyable. It is also suggested that developing new exercise program would be needed to improve adherence of exercise.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare changes in learning objectives in Fundamentals of Nursing which were established between 2000 and 2004. Method: 2000, 2004 learning objectives were analyzed with frequencies and percents. Results: There was an increase in the total number of learning objectives used in 2004(n=534) over 2000(n=527). In 2004 compared to 2000, there was an increase in learning objectives related to nursing process, need of oxygenation, need of nutrition, need of temperature regulation, need of activity and exercise, need of comfort, medication, preoperative care. According to Bloom's taxonomy, learning objectives established in 2004, mainly consisted of three domains, 35.5% for comprehension, 23.6% for synthesis, 20.4% for knowledge Changes in learning objectives established in 2004 compared to 2000 decreases in the comprehension domain and increases in the synthesis domain. Conclusion: The learning objectives established in 2004 showed remarkable change when compared to those established in 2000. But the learning objective domains in Bloom's taxonomy were distributed unevenly. For better learning objectives in Fundamentals of Nursing, constant revision will be needed.

Melanoma is one of the most aggressive skin cancers. Hypoxia contributes to the aggressiveness of melanoma by promoting cancer growth and metastasis. Upregulation of cyclin D1 can promote uncontrolled cell proliferation in melanoma, whereas stimulation of cytotoxic T cell activity can inhibit it. Epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays a critical role in melanoma metastasis. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is a main transcriptional mediator that regulates many genes related to hypoxia. CoCl2 is one of the most commonly used hypoxia-mimetic chemicals in cell culture. In this study, inhibitory effects of IDF-11774, an inhibitor of HIF-1α, on melanoma growth and metastasis were examined using cultured B16F10 mouse melanoma cells and nude mice transplanted with B16F10 melanoma cells in the presence or absence of CoCl2-induced hypoxia. IDF-11774 reduced HIF-1α upregulation and cell survival, but increased cytotoxicity of cultured melanoma cells under CoCl2-induced hypoxia. IDF-11774 also reduced tumor size and local invasion of B16F10 melanoma in nude mice along with HIF-1α downregulation. Expression levels of cyclin D1 in melanoma were increased by CoCl2 but decreased by IDF-11774. Apoptosis of melanoma cells and infiltration of cytotoxic T cells were increased in melanoma after treatment with IDF-11774. EMT was stimulated by CoCl2, but restored by IDF11774. Overall, IDF-11774 inhibited the growth and metastasis of B16F10 melanoma via HIF-1α downregulation. The growth of B16F10 melanoma was inhibited by cyclin D1 downregulation and cytotoxic T cell stimulation. Metastasis of B16F10 melanoma was inhibited by EMT suppression.
