  • This is a study on village names in a plain region of Changnyeong-Gun, a mountain region of Bonghwa-Gun and an island region of Namhae-Gun. The three regions differ in geographical features. The data are based on 455 village names in Changnyeong-Gun, 552 village names in Bonghwa-Gun and 275 village names in Namhae-Gun found in the 1 : 50,000 topographic map. The method of this study is to analyze the word structures of village names in the five basic concepts in geography : Man-Land(Natural Environment and Human Activities). Spatial Relation, Distribution, Region and Transition. The main results of this study are as follows: 1. Naming of villages are related to Natural Environment(41%), Human Activities(23%), Region(17%), Spatial Relation(13%), Distribution(5%), and Transition(3%). Of these six factors, Changnyeong-Gun is relatively dominant in village names related to Spatial Relations, Region and Transition ; Bonghwa-Gun Natural Environment and Namhae-Gun Human Activities and Spatial Relations. But the three Guns are absolutely dominant in village names related to Natural Environment and Human Activities. 2. A village name is divided into the specific name part(given name) and the generic name part(classified name). Names related to Human Activities, Spatial Relations, Distribution and Transition are more frequently found in the specific name part. Therefore, they are used as the given name of a village name. Whereas names related to Natural Environment and Region are more frequently found in generic name part, which means that they are used as the classified name of a village. 3. The word structure of a village name usually has two parts a frontal part(given name) and a rear part(classified name). The two parts have a particular pattern in the geographic concept when they are combined. 1) In the village names related to in their frontal part of the word structure, is more frequently combined as their rear part in Bonghwa-Gun, in Namhae-Gun and in Changnyeong-Gun. 2) In the village names related to in their frontal part of the word structure, is more frequently combined as their rear part in Changnyeong-Gun, in Namhae-Gun and in Bonghwa-Gun. Accordingly, Man(Human Activities) - Land (Natural Environment) can be considered the most important concept in the naming of villages, because the concept is most frequently used in the word structures of village names.

  • The way to check whether the urban regeneration project is going in the right direction is fundamental for understanding the satisfaction of local residents relevant to the project. This study aims to analyze the satisfaction of residents by selecting factors that affect the satisfaction of Namhae-gun residents with urban regeneration projects. Through this, after examining whether the project is being implemented well in accordance with the purpose of the urban regeneration new deal project, this study presents the direction of the Namhae-gun urban regeneration new deal project. In result, in the case of the resident group, satisfaction with security and landscape influenced satisfaction with the entire project. In addition, publicity for urban regeneration projects had the greatest impact on satisfaction, and other neighborhood reliability, urban regeneration-related education, and meetings had the greatest impact on satisfaction with the project. In the case of the merchant group, it was found that the satisfaction with the entire project increased when the satisfaction with the public relations. However, it was found that physical factors, that is, factors for improving the living environment, did not affect satisfaction with urban regeneration projects. The findings of this study, as local parts of Namhae-gun urban regeneration project progresses, can be further expanded to the holistic county level.

  • Landscape characteristics and the culture of the sacred Dangsan forests located at Mulgeon village, Eunjeom village and Daejipo village in Mulgeon-ri, Namhae-gun were investigated. The potential of Dangsan forests for agricultural heritage, linked with paddy fields, has been discussed. Dangsan forest is a traditional village forest and a representative cultural heritage with a history of more than several hundred years. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs of Korea evaluates that the agricultural heritage is a new means and will provide a potential for the development of rural areas. The Dangsan forests were located in the neighborhood of paddy fields. The Dangsan forests are to be related to paddy fields in order to get attention as an agricultural heritage. Especially, the Dangsan forest of Mulgeon village was designated as Natural Monument #150 with the name, Windbreak forest of Mulgeon-ri, Namhae. It was suggested that the national monument to rename as Dangsan forest of Mulgeon village, Namhae. The size of this forest was measured to be 735 m in length and 31 m in width. Mulgeon-ri will be better recognized as a candidate place of agricultural heritage with three Dangsan forests associated with paddy fields.

  • This study carried out farmland suitability analysis for southern-type garlic cultivation considering soil and temperature as well as water deficit conditions. The spatial extent was limited within the area derived by Kim et al. (2012) using just soil and temperature constraints. Daily soil moisture was simulated using a one-layer soil water balance model at a $100{\times}100m$ grid unit, and then annual water deficit was calculated from 2000 to 2010. The farmland suitability was classified as four steps: best suitable, suitable, possible, and low productive. As a result, total area of best suitable or suitable farmland was about 375,900 ha, and Gimje-si and Haenam-gun were appeared as the largest favorable area for southern-type garlic cultivation. The best suitable or suitable area at Haenam-gun, Goheung-gun, Shinan-gun, Namhae-gun, and Muan-gun, major production regions of southern-type garlic, were extracted as 20,187 ha, 13,018 ha, 4,715 ha, 1,319 ha, and 349 ha, respectively. On the other hand, the result showed that the adoption of sprinkler irrigation systems might be critical in cultivating the southern-type garlic at some regions having poor water balance.

  • The forest vegetation of Namhae-gun was investigated using the methodology of the Z.-M. school of phytosociology from March, 1998 to September, 2003. The forest vegetation was classified into 12 communities, 11 subcommunities, 5 afforestations as follows : Quercus mongolica community(typical subcommunity, Rhododendron schlippenbachii subcommunity), Ouercus serrata community(typical subcommunity, Acer pseudo-sieboldianum subcommunity), Ouercus variablis community(typical subcommunity, Platycarya strobilacea subcommunity), Quercus acutissima community, Carpinus laxiflora community, Carpinus coreans community, Styrax japonica community, Zelkova serrata community, Corylopsis coreana community, Pinus densiflora community(typical subcommunity, Rhododendron mucronulatum subcommunity, Carpinus laxiflora subcommunity), Pinus thunbergii community(typical subcommunity, Eurya Japonica subcommunity), Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense community, Chamaecyparis obtusa afforestation, Alnus firma afforestation, Pinus rigida afforestation, Robinia pseudo-acacia afforestation, Cryptomeria japonica afforestation. The soil pH of the study area was ranged from 4.2 to 5.4, and soil moisture content was strongly related to organic matter content. The Corylopsis coreana community contained the highest soil moisture content, whereas Pinus densiflora community contained the lowest one. The content of organic matter were $15.8\sim19.1%$ in the Quercus mongolica, Carpinus coreans and Ouercus serrata communities, $3.3\sim5.4%$ in the Quercus acutissima, Corylopsis coreana and Pinus thunbergii communities, and $2.8\sim5.6%$ in the Pinus rigida and Cryptomeria japonica afforestation. There is significant correlation among the contents of cations($K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$).

  • Drought has different characteristics from other disasters. Say, drought effect can be prolonged according to drought duration and so the estimation of drought damage can be difficult. Therefore this study suggested and applied the proper drought damage estimation method developed based on previous methods. The suggested method was used for the drought damage estimations considering agricultural aspect and domestic water use which the data are available. We estimated drought damages on Gimhae-si, Namhae-gun, Uiryeong-gun, Changnyeong-gun, and Changwon-si in Gyungsang Nam-do from 2006 to 2008. As a result, in agricultural aspect, the damage on rice was about 195million won in Uiryeong-gun and on rice was about 67million won in Changnyeong-gun. In domestic water use, the damage was about 21billion won on 4 towns of Namhae-gun when we assumed the expense for sufferance is 400,000 won. We may need develope the method in the direction of the best use of present data for the improvement of the suggested method in agricultural aspect. In the case of the estimation of drought damage about domestic water use, we could suggest more realistic method if we consider the weights for the expense for sufferance and water use.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate vulnerability of drought in small island areas. Vulnerability assessment factors of drought were selected by applying the factor analysis. Ninety Eup/Myon areas in small island were evaluated to vulnerability of drought by entropy method adapting objective weights. Vulnerability consisted of climate exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. A total of 22 indicators were used to evaluate and analyze vulnerability of drought in small island areas. The results of entropy method showed that winter rainfall, no rainfall days, agricultural population rate, cultivation area rate, water supply rate and groundwater capacity have a significant impact on drought assessment. The overall assessment of vulnerability indicated that Seodo-myeon Ganghwa-gun, Seolcheon-myeon Namhae-gun and Samsan-myeon Ganghwa-gun were the most vulnerable to drought. Especially Ganghwa-gun should be considered policy priority to establish drought measures in the future, because it has a high vulnerability of drought.
