  • The adhesion behaviors and processability of NBR as a sealing material were investigated. In order to find the optimum formulation, the adhesive properties and processability were observed as the change of the contents of acrylonitrile (ACN) in NBR. Effects of Mooney viscosity, filler, plasticizer and crosslinking agent on the adhesion behaviors were also studied. The contents of ACN in NBR have great effects on adhesion behaviors and processability in NBR sealing. To know the optimum condition of roll mixing, degree of dispersion was investigated. It was confirmed that degree of dispersion was influenced by various factors such as mixing order, time, and temperature. The crosslinking system was studied as the observation of sulfur system, peroxide system, crosslinking density, and structure. From the variation of the dry condition and hexamine contents, the relation between adhesive and NBR was studied. These results show the adhesion properties and processability are dependent on the contents of ACN and crosslinking system.

  • Mixing condition and procedure affect properties or a filled rubber compound such as filler dispersion, viscosity, and bound rubber formation. Influence of separate load of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) on properties or silica-filled SBR compounds containing NBR was studied. Cure time and cure rate became faster as NBR content increased. The crosslink density increased with increase in the NBR content. The bound rubber content also increased as the NBR content increased. NBR content of the bound rubber was higher than that of the compounded rubber. The bound rubber content was higher when SBR and NBR were loaded separately than when loading simultaneously. The cure time and cure rate were slower for the separate load than for the simultaneous one. The crosslink density was also lower for the former case than for the latter one.

  • To modify the NBR rubber roll which has poor abrasion and chemical resistance, NBR/PVC blends were prepared in various composition ratios. First of all, their miscibility and vulcanization characteristics were investigated. Their abrasion and chemical resistant properties and physical properties were also studied. DSC thermograms for NBR/PVC blends show only one Tg in the entire composition range, demonstrating a perfect miscibility. In the vulcanization characteristics tested by rheometer, maximum torque decreases as PVC contents increased. In the investigation of physical properties of NBR/PVC blends, hardness increases and elongation decreases along with the increasing contents of PVC. On the other hands, tensile strength increases with the increasing contents of PVC up to 11.1 wt. %, and then decreases with higher contents of PVC. While the abrasion resistance of NBR/PVC blends was similar to that of NBR itself, the chemical resistance of NBR/PVC blends was superior to that of NBR.

  • This paper presents the capability to use QuickBird imagery for effects of forest disturbance in Okgye burned area. Particular attention of this paper deals with the NBR-derived mapping burn severity on QuickBird imagery to locate reliable rehabilitation(namely, secondary succession) over postfire surface. Comparisons of the mapping forest disturbance derived from QuickBird NBR data and the mapping burn severity derived from Landsat ${\Delta}NBR$ data show substantial agreement (KHAT value =0.7886). The method calculated from the correlation between QuickBird wetness and Landsat ETM+ band7 may have application to forest harvest disturbance.

  • Polybutadiene latex grafted (g-PB) in g-PB/SAN blends, i.e., acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer (ABS) were partially replaced by acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer (NBR) with various acrylonitrile (AN) contents. Changes in morphology, physical and rheological properties were examined. The dispersed size of NBR was decreased as the miscibility with matrix SAM, was increased by increasing AN content in NBR upto 50 wt%. Impact strength was enhanced about two-fold due to the NBR dispersed with a slight larger size than the original g-PB. Gloss was effectively reduced as the particle size of NBR was increased. Tensile yield strength was decreased, and elongation at break or yield behavior at low shear rate were increased as g-PB was partially replaced by NBR having AN content less that 40 wt%.

  • In this study, the effect of the cure, mechanical properties, and oil resistance of NBR (acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber)/peroxide compounds were investigated for various co-agents. NBR compounds were characterized using a swelling test, a rheometer (MDR), and a compression set test. Mechanical properties were tested with original compounds, heated in air and exposed to the ASTM No.1, IRM 903 oil. NBR compounds were prepared using peroxide as the crosslinking agent. Trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA), triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC), and 1,2-polybutadiene (HVPBD) were used as co-agents. The NBR compounds containing TMPTMA and HVPBD lowered the scorch time, while the addition of TAIC did not significantly change the scorch time. NBR compounds containing TMPTMA increased the crosslinking density, while the addition of TAIC and HVPBD lowered the crosslinking density. Moreover, the addition of TMPTMA improved the oil resistance of the NBR compound.

  • The usefulness of the multi-temporal satellite image to monitoring the vegetation recovery process after forest fire was tested. Using multi-temporal Landsat TM and ETM+data, NDVI and NBR changes over times were analyzed. Both NDVI and NBR values were rapidly decreased after the fire and gradually increased for all forest type and damage class. However, NBR curve showed much clearer tendency of vegetation recovery than NDVI. Both indices yielded the lowest values in severely damaged red pine forest. The results show the vegetation recovery process after forest fire can detect and monitor using multi-temporal Landsat image. NBR was proved to be useful to examine the recovering and development process of the vegetation after fire. In the not damaged forest, however the NDVI shows more potential capability to discriminate the forest types than NBR..

  • Burn severity is an important role for rehabilitation of burned forest area. This factor led to the pilot study to determine if high resolution IKONOS images could be used to classify and delinenate the bum severity over burned areas of Samchock Fire and Cheongyang-Yesan Fire. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: 1. The modified Normalized Bum Ratio (NBR) for IKONOS imagery can be evaluated using burn severity mapping. 2. IKONOS-derived NBR imagery could provide fire scar and detail mapping of burned areas at Samchock fire and Cheongyang-Yesan Burns.

  • The actuation performance of an EADE (Electro-active dielectric elastomer) is studied as functions of thinner content, thickness and types of the dielectric elastomer such as natural (NR), acrylonitrile-butadiene (NBR), and silicon (KE-12) rubbers. With a decrease in elastomer thickness ($1{\rightarrow}0.5{\rightarrow}0.25{\rightarrow}0.1{\rightarrow}0.05$ mm) and an increase in thinner content ($0{\rightarrow}30{\rightarrow}50$ phr), the actuating displacement of KE-12 elastomer is increased, however their breakdown occurs at low voltage. For the same thickness (1 mm), the displacement of KE-12 elastomer shows a higher value (2.24 mm) compared to that of NR or NBR at the same applied voltage of 25 kV. The KE-12 has the lowest elastic modulus and the NBR has the highest one among the tested elastomers. However, the displacement of NBR elastomer is higher compared to that of NR because of high dielectric constant. It is found that the important factors of EADE actuator are a thickness, modulus and dielectric constant of the elastomer.

  • Analysis on forest through satellite image data can be obtained from normalized burn ration (NBR) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from descriptive information of reflection on the earth's surface recorded each waveband. This study focuses on the efficiency of NBR through comparative analysis after obtaining NBR and NDVI of images form 1 you, 2 years and just after the forest fire and the time of forest-preserved of the area before the forest fire in Sacheon myeon, Cangneung City where the forest fro broke out. As a result, it shows dynamic changes with greater range that differences between NBR images rather than differences between NDVI images, which means it would be better to use NBR image for the analysis of the degrees of damages from forest fire or the status of vegetation restoration and also NBR image more distinctly shows both than NDVI image in forest fro damage area.
