  • Linear motor (LM) based shuttle cars will play an important role in the future transportation systems of marine terminals to cope with increasing container flows. These systems are known as agile port terminals because of their significant advantages. However, routing for multiple shuttle cars is still an open issue. We present a network model of a container yard and propose constrained dynamic programming (DP) for its routing strategy with collision avoidance. The algorithm is a modified version of typical DP which is used to find an optimal path for a single traveler. We evaluate the new algorithm through simulation results for three shuttle cars in a mesh-type container yard.

  • This paper presents a framework for decentralized control of self-organizing swarm systems based on the artificial potential functions (APFs). The framework explores the benefits by associating agents based on position information to realize complex swarming behaviors. A key development is the introduction of a set of association rules by APFs that effectively deal with a host of swarming issues such as flexible and agile formation. In this scheme, multiple agents in a swarm self-organize to flock and achieve formation control through attractive and repulsive forces among themselves using APFs. In particular, this paper presents an association rule for swarming that requires less movement for each agent and compact formation among agents. Extensive simulations are presented to illustrate the viability of the proposed framework.

  • For ANC systems applied to aircrafts or passenger ships, engines from which reference signals are usually measured are located so far from seats where main part of controllers are placed. It can make feedforward ANC scheme difficult to implement or very costly. Feedback ANC algorithms which do not require reference signals and use error signals alone to update the filter, are usually sensitive to measurement noise ' and impulse noise. In this paper, reference signal needed for the feedforward control is not measured directly but generated with the estimated frequencies. Cascade adaptive notch filter (ANF), which has the low computational burden, is used to implement ANC system in real time. Several ANFs of order 2 are connected in series to estimate multiple sinusoids. Computer simulations and experiments in the laboratory for verifying efficacy of the proposed algorithm are carried out.

  • In this paper, we examine the displacement characteristics of the parallel leaf spring mechanism with large-deflective elastic hinges, and the validity of this mechanism as a translational and rotational mechanism is confirmed with multi-input system. This study is focused on the linear driving force as an input force, which is applied to the large-deflective elastic mechanism, and the displacement characteristics are discussed with theoretically and experimentally. The motions of this mechanism due to large-deflective hinges are changed by the position of loading force regardless of a single driving force. The numbers of degree of freedom are increased with the hinges, and we can be used to a multiple driving force in order to obtain many types of Output.

  • In recent years, distributed control systems(DCS) using fieldbus such as CAN have been being applied to process systems but it is very difficult to design the DCS in order to guarantee the given end-to-end constraints such as precedence constraints, time constraints, and periods and priorities of tasks and messages. This paper presents a scheduling method to guarantee the given end-to-end constraints. The presented scheduling method is the integrated one considering both tasks executed in each node and messages transmitted via the network and is designed to be applied to a general DCS that has multiple loops with several types of constraints, where each loop consists of ...

  • Double-effect absorption chiller-heaters have been widely installed in large buildings and are also becoming popular in mid-sized commercial buildings. While much emphasis is Put on designing energy saving and efficient chiller-heaters, careful attention must also be given to the design of control systems for these devices. Currently, these devices are controlled by their own built-in controllers, such as relay based sequence controller or microprocessor based controller. But, because large buildings require multiple chiller-heaters, a centralized supervision and control system is necessary for the efficient monitoring, control, and operations management of these devices We have developed man-machine interface software that allows the implementation of such a system. This system will support increased reliability, more efficient building management operations, and reduced ...

  • Recent trends in deep reinforcement learning (DRL) have revealed the considerable improvements to DRL algorithms in terms of performance, learning stability, and computational efficiency. DRL also enables the scenarios that it covers (e.g., partial observability; cooperation, competition, coexistence, and communications among multiple agents; multi-task; decentralized intelligence) to be vastly expanded. These features have cultivated multi-agent reinforcement learning research. DRL is also expanding its applications from robotics to natural language processing and computer vision into a wide array of fields such as finance, healthcare, chemistry, and even art. In this report, we briefly summarize various DRL techniques and research directions.

  • This paper describes a real-time human and robot tracking method in Intelligent Space with multi-camera networks. The proposed method detects candidates for humans and robots by using the histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) feature in an image. To classify humans and robots from the candidates in real time, we apply cascaded structure to constructing a strong classifier which consists of many weak classifiers as follows: a linear support vector machine (SVM) and a radial-basis function (RBF) SVM. By using the multiple view geometry, the method estimates the 3D position of humans and robots from their 2D coordinates on image coordinate system, and tracks their positions by using stochastic approach. To test the performance of the method, humans and robots are asked to move according to given rectangular and circular paths. Experimental results show that the proposed method is able to reduce the localization error and be good for a practical application of human-centered services in the Intelligent Space.

  • This research focuses on controlling robots and their formations using rough mereology as a means for spatial reasoning. The authors present the state of the art theory behind path planning, robot cooperation domains and ways of creating robot formations. Furthermore, the theory behind Rough Mereology as a way of implementing mereological potential field based path creation and navigation for single and multiple robots is described. An implementation of the algorithm is shown in simulation using RoboSim simulator. Five formations are tested (Line, Rhomboid, Snake, Circle, Cross) along with three decision systems (First In, Leader First, Horde Mode) as compared to other methods.

  • The use of robots in automated factories requires accurate bin-picking to ensure that objects are correctly identified and selected. In the case of atypical objects with multiple reflections from their surfaces, this is a challenging task. In this paper, we developed a random 3D bin picking system by integrating the low-cost vision system with the robotics system. The vision system identifies the position and posture of candidate parts, then the robot system validates if one of the candidate parts is pickable; if a part is identified as pickable, then the robot will pick up this part and place it accurately in the right location.
