  • The tree method can be extended to multivariate responses, such as repeated measure and longitudinal data, by modifying the split function so as to accommodate multiple responses. Recently, some decision trees for multiple responses have been constructed by Segal (1992) and Zhang (1998). Segal suggested a tree can analyze continuous longitudinal response using Mahalanobis distance for within node homogeneity measures and Zhang suggested a tree can analyze multiple binary responses using generalized entropy criterion which is proportional to maximum likelihood of joint distribution of multiple binary responses. In this paper, we will modify CART procedure and suggest a new tree-based method that can analyze multiple binary responses using similarity measures.

  • Robust design is an approach to reduce the performance variation of mutiple responses in products and processes. In fact, in many experimental designs require the simultaneous optimization of multiple responses. In this paper, we propose how to simultaneously optimize multiple responses for robust design when data are collected from a combined array. The proposed method is based on the quadratic loss function. An example is illustrated to show the proposed method.

  • This article addresses the problem of measuring a joint agreement between multiple raters and a standard set of responses. A new agreement measure based on Um's approach is proposed. The proposed agreement measure is used for multivariate interval responses. Comparison is made between the proposed measure and other corresponding agreement measures using hypothetical data set.

  • In the Taguchi parameter design, the product-array approach using orthogonal arrays is mainly used. However, it often requires an excessive number of experiments. An alternative approach, which is called the combined-array approach, was suggested by Welch et al (1990) and studied by Vining and Myers (1990) and others. In these studies, only single respouse variable was considered. We propose how to simultaneously optimize multiple responses when there are correlations among responses.

  • For product or process design and development, it is common to optimize multiple responses (characteristics) based on experimental data. To determine optimal conditions, we need to design the experiment, estimate a proper model for each response, and optimize the multiple responses simultaneously. There are several techniques and many research results on optimizing multiple responses simultaneously, when the experimental data are available. However, the experimental design issue for optimizing multiple responses has not been discussed yet. This paper proposes some idea on how to plan screening design when requirements for multiple performance characteristics are to be met in developing new products. A screening design procedure is developed for securing the requirements of multiple responses. Initial design factors are classified into three categories; specific, non-conflicting common, and conflicting common. After screening experiments, follow-up design region search method is suggested with respect to the most unsatisfied or important response, or overall desirability. A case study on a synthesis of melamine formaldehyde resin is presented to illustrate the procedure and to show the validity of the approach.

  • This paper presents the applicability of series tuned mass dampers (STMDs) to reduce the multiple resonant responses of continuous railway bridges under high-speed train. The bridge is modeled by two-span Bernoulli-Euler beam with uniform cross-section, and a STMD device consisting of two TMD units installed on the bridge to reduce its multiple resonant vibrations. The system is assumed to be under the action of a high-speed train passage which is modeled as a series of moving forces. Sequential Programming Technique (SQP) is carried out to find the optimal parameters of the STMD that minimizes the maximum peak responses of the bridge. Comparisons with the results available in the literature are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of STMD system in reducing the multiple resonant responses of the continuous railway bridges under high-speed trains.

  • Robust parameter design is an off-line production technique for reducing variation and improving the quality of products and processes by using product arrays. However, the use of the product arrays usually requires a large number of runs. To overcome the drawback of the product array, the combined array can be used. Also optimizing multiple responses is increasingly important in industry. Using simultaneous optimization measures, we can deal with the multiple response case. In this paper we compare the simultaneous optimization using the Taguchi's product array with using the combined array. And models possible to set on combined arrays are also investigated and compared with the cases of product arrays.
