  • This paper conducts a study on methods for associating multipath tracks received by a horizontal line array sonar. The horizontal line array sonar introduces conical bearing ambiguities due to its array-shaped characteristics. Target signals are often subject to multipath propagation in the ocean, resulting in errors in target bearing estimation due to these bearing ambiguities. Recent research efforts have been directed toward using multipath tracks to estimate the positions of targets. However, there has been a lack of research dedicated to identifying multipath tracks from the measurements of a horizontal line array sonar. Therefore, this study identifies the conical bearing characteristics of multipath signals based on the result of experiment and establishes criteria for associating multipath tracks. Additionally, Simulations are performed to determine the ability to associate multipath tracks.

  • This paper describes the effective and rigorous analytic method of multipath effect which results from insufficient isolation characteristics between adjacent channels in communication payload system. It is very important to analyze the multipath effect for verifying the performance of transponder subsystem that especially is consist of multi channels. Finally the multipath effect are analyzed by calculating the GR and GDR for two adjacent channels of Ku-band transponder subsystem on the Communication & Broadcasting Satellite(CBS).

  • Measurement of deflections of certain bridges is usually hampered by corruption of the GPS signal by multipath associated with passing vehicles, resulting to unrealistically large apparent displacements. Field data from the Gorgopotamos train bridge in Greece and systematic experiments revealed that such bias is due to superimposition of two major effects, (i) changes in the geometry of satellites because of partial masking of certain satellites by the passing vehicles (this effect can be faced with solutions excluding satellites that get temporarily blocked by passing vehicles) and (ii) dynamic multipath caused from reflection of satellite signals on the passing trains, a high frequency multipath effect, different from the static multipath. Dynamic multipath seems to have rather irregular amplitude, depending on the geometry of measured satellites, but a typical pattern, mainly consisting of a baseline offset, wide base peaks correlating with the sequence of main reflective surfaces of the vehicles passing next to the antenna. In cases of limited corruption of GPS signal by dynamic multipath, corresponding to scale distortion of the short-period component of the GPS waveforms, we propose an algorithm which permits to reconstruct the waveform of bridge deflections using a weak fusion of GPS and RTS data, based on the complementary characteristics of the two instruments. By application of the proposed algorithm we managed to extract semi-static and dynamic displacements and oscillation frequencies of a historical railway bridge under train loading by using noisy GPS and RTS recordings. The combination of GPS and RTS is possible because these two sensors can be fully collocated and have complementary characteristics, with RTS and GPS focusing on the long- and short-period characteristics of the displacement, respectively.

  • This paper suggests a multipath establishing scheme for ad hoc networks. Data paths are established by on-demand manner. Multipath are made as a sequence of route control message exchange at route setup process. Multipath can be used as a backup path or load balancing for data exchange. Proposed scheme uses a one-hop pre-search scheme for establishing multipath between source and destination. When a node selects a next node for route reply, the node finds optimal route by exchanging route information with neighbor nodes. Simulation results show that the proposed multipath scheme has better split characteristics among multipath and higher route survivability at the environment where nodes are moving.

  • In this paper, a supervised adaptive equalization algorithm based on probability density function (PDF) matching method is introduced and its decision-feedback version is proposed for underwater communication channels with strong impulsive noise and severe multipath characteristics. The conventional least mean square (LMS) algorithm based on mean squared error (MSE) criterion has shown to be incapable of coping with impulsive noise and multipath effects commonly shown in underwater communications. The linear PDF matching algorithm, which shows immunity to impulsive noise, however, has revealed to yield unsatisfying performance under severe multipath environments with impulsive noise. On the other hand, the proposed nonlinear PDF matching algorithm with decision feedback proves in the simulation to possess superior robustness against impulsive noise and multipath characteristics of underwater communication channels.

  • In this paper, we propose two receiver structures of the impulse radio (IR) system to improve its performance in multipath environments. Recently, the impulse radio system has drawn much attention for future high-speed wire-less communication services. The conventional IR receiver directly correlates received signals with the ideal reference waveform, which results in performance degradation in multipath environments. The Key idea of the proposed receiver structures is to reflect the multipath Characteristics into the IR receiver. One is to deconvolve the received waveform with estimates of the multipath gains to obtain the transmitted waveform while the other is to modify the reference waveform of the correlator according to the estimates of the multipath gains. We examine the performance of the proposed schemes for the statistical indoor wireless communication channel model using computer simulation.

  • In this paper, the multipath effect on underwater acoustic channel bandwidth and BFSK and BPSK bit error dependancy on channel bandwidth are analyzed. The multipath is modeled as a discrete multipath and a continuous multipath and the channel bandwidth is expressed as a function of multipath delay spread constant. Bit error characteristics on the channel bandwidth and the criteria of the multipath delay spread constant are found through the numerical simulation. The transmission bit rate of less than 100bps in the water tank which has a channel bandwidth of 100Hz, is a consistent result with the numerical simulation.

  • Underwater channels can be regarded as time-varying systems in view of the acoustical characteristics due to the fact that the characteristics of the channel are affected by the environmental and geometrical conditions. Especially in shallow water case, the surface and bottom conduct as a waveguide so echo effect due tu the multipath reflections are severe. Therefore in shallow water communications, it is very important to equalize the transmitted signals distorted by the underwater channels with time-varying multipath fading. In this paper an equalizer system which employs the frequency domain adaptive filter to equalize the channels using inverse modeling technique is introduced.

  • In this paper, a blind adaptive equalization algorithm based on PDF-distance minimization and a set of Delta functions is introduced and its superior robustness against impulsive noise and multipath characteristics of underwater communication channels is proved. The conventional CMA based on MSE has shown to be incapable of coping with impulsive noise, and correntropy blind algorithm has also revealed to yield not satisfying performance for the mission. On the other hand, the blind adaptive equalization algorithm based on PDF-distance minimization and a set of Delta functions has been proved to solve effectively the problem of impulsive noise and multipath characteristics of underwater communication channels through theoretical and simulation analysis.

  • Recent advancements in network infrastructures provide increased opportunities to support data delivery over multiple paths. Compared with multi-homing scenario, overlay network is regarded as an effective way to construct multiple paths between end devices without any change on the underlying network. Exploiting multipath characteristics has been explored for TCP with multi-homing device, but the corresponding exploration with overlay network has not been studied in detail yet. Motivated by improving quality of experience (QoE) for reliable data delivery, we propose a multipath message transport protocol based on application level relay (MPMTP-AR). MPMTP-AR proposes mechanisms and algorithms to support basic operations of multipath transmission. Dynamic feedback provides a foundation to distribute reasonable load to each path. Common source decrease (CSD) takes the load weight of the path with congestion into consideration to adjust congestion window. MPMTP-AR uses two-level sending buffer to ensure independence between paths and utilizes two-level receiving buffer to improve queuing performance. Finally, the MPMTP-AR is implemented on the Linux platform and evaluated by comprehensive experiments.
