  • In this paper, we propose a polychotomous regression model when independent variables include both categorical and numerical variables. For categorical independent variables, we use direct sums, and tensor product splines are used for continuous independent variables. We use BIC for varible selections criterior. We implemented the algorithm and apply the algorithm to real data. The use of direct sums and tensor products outperformed the usual multinomial logistic regression model.

  • Nowadays, as traffic jams are a daily elementary problem in both developed and developing countries, systems to monitor, predict, and detect traffic conditions are playing an important role in research fields. Comparing them, researchers have been trying to solve problems by applying many kinds of technologies, especially roadside sensors, which still have some issues, and for that reason, any one particular method by itself could not generate sufficient traffic prediction results. However, these sensors have some issues that are not useful for research. Therefore, it may not be best to use them as stand-alone methods for a traffic prediction system. On that note, this paper mainly focuses on predicting traffic conditions based on a hybrid prediction approach, which stands on accuracy comparison of three prediction models: multinomial logistic regression, decision trees, and support vector machine (SVM) classifiers. This is aimed at selecting the most suitable approach by means of integrating proficiencies from these approaches. It was also experimentally confirmed, with test cases and simulations that showed the performance of this hybrid method is more effective than individual methods.

  • Analysis approaches for single compositional data are well established; however, effective analysis strategies for paired compositional data remain to be investigated. The current project was motivated by studies of age-related hearing loss (presbyacusis), where subjects are classified into four audiometric phenotypes that need to be ranked within these phenotypes based on their paired compositional data. We address this challenge by formulating this problem as a classification problem and integrating a penalized multinomial logistic regression model with compositional data analysis approaches. We utilize Elastic Net for a penalty function, while considering average, absolute difference, and perturbation operators for compositional data. We applied the proposed approach to the presbyacusis study of 532 subjects with probabilities that each ear of a subject belongs to each of four presbyacusis subtypes. We further investigated the ranking of presbyacusis subjects using the proposed approach based on previous literature. The data analysis results indicate that the proposed approach is effective for ranking subjects based on paired compositional data.

  • This study provides basic data when planning nutrition support for healthy aging by revealing the relationship between various symptoms in the elderly and nutrient intake. From the 8th National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, data from senior citizens aged 65 years or older in 2021 were used, and answers on the depression prevalence, activity restrictions, complaints of discomfort when chewing, and nutrient intake were analyzed through SPSS multiple logistic regression analysis. In the case of depression, there was a significant effect on the intake of four of the 20 nutrients (water, protein, cholesterol, and vitamin E). When experiencing activity restrictions, the intake of eight of the 20 nutrients (phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin D, beta-carotene, retinol, thiamine, and niacin) was affected. When experiencing chewing discomfort, the intake of three of the 20 nutrients (fat, magnesium, and vitamin E) was affected. Elderly people who suffer from depression, activity restrictions, and discomfort with chewing are at risk of various nutrient deficiencies, and related studies need to be conducted.

  • Objective : This study was undertaken for discovering the characteristics of sleep in ordinary symptoms based on the Sasang Constitution. The result of this study could be helpful to understand and to identify patients such as Taeumin, Soyangin Soeumin or Taeyangin. Methods : There were 1,229 patients (529 men), who answered the questionnaire about their ordinary sleeping patterns. They were diagnosed, including their clinical Sasang Constitution, by the Sasang Constitution specialist at Bundang Oriental Hospital of Dongguk University. By applying the multinomial and binary logistic regression analysis to those collected materials, we can measure the characteristics and the influence of ordinary sleeping patterns to the dependent variable (Sasang Constitution). Results : In order of the item's influence that had decided one's constitution, between Taeumin and Soeumin, Taeumin snored frequently or well more than Soeumin, Soeumin had more dreams and more sleeping times than Taeumin, and Taeumin struggled frequently or well more than Soeumin. Between Soyangin and Soeumin, Soeumin dreams more frequently than Soyangin, Soyangin snored frequently or well more than Soeumin, and Soeumin has more sleeping times than Taeumin. Between Taeumin and Soyangin, Taeumin snored frequently or well more than Soyangin. Between Taeyangin and a group of the other constitutions, Taeyangin felt unwell after sleeping more than the other constitutions, the other constitutions awaked frequently more than Taeyangin during sleeping. Conclusion : This study will be used for identifying patients as Taeumin, Soyangin, Soeumin or Taeyangin by contrast with each other.

  • The purpose of this study was to perform a convergence study for the investigation of the trend of research topics related to thyroid cancer in Korea. We collected related research papers from DBpia and employed LDA-based topic model. In result, we identified four research topics, each of which concerns "Surgery", "Disease aggressiveness", "Survival analysis", and "Well-being of patients". With multinomial logistic regression, we found significant time trend, where "Surgery"-related topic was popular before 2000, topics regarding "Disease aggressiveness" and "Survival analysis" were frequently addressed in the 2000s, and "Survival analysis" and especially "Well-being of patients" have been pursued since 2010. The findings would serve as a reference guide for research directions. Future work may examine whether the recent change in research topics is observed in other diseases.

  • Purpose: Minimally invasive gastrectomy is a promising surgical method with well-known benefits, including reduced postoperative complications. However, for total gastrectomy of gastric cancers, this approach does not significantly reduce the risk of complications. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the incidence and risk factors for the severity of complications associated with minimally invasive total gastrectomy for gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: The study included 392 consecutive patients with gastric cancer who underwent either laparoscopic or robotic total gastrectomy between 2011 and 2019. Clinicopathological and operative characteristics were assessed to determine the features related to postoperative complications after minimally invasive total gastrectomy. Binomial and multinomial logistic regression models were used to identify the risk factors for overall complications and mild and severe complications, respectively. Results: Of 103 (26.3%) patients experiencing complications, 66 (16.8%) and 37 (9.4%) developed mild and severe complications, respectively. On multivariate multinomial regression analysis, independent predictors of severe complications included obesity (OR, 2.56; 95% CI, 1.02-6.43; P=0.046), advanced stage (OR, 2.90; 95% CI, 1.13-7.43; P=0.026), and more intraoperative bleeding (OR, 1.04; 95% CI, 1.02-1.06; P=0.001). Operation time was the only independent risk factor for mild complications (OR, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.001-1.13; P=0.047). Conclusions: The risk factors for mild and severe complications were associated with surgery, indicating surgical difficulty. Surgeons should be aware of these potential risks that are related to the severity of complications so as to reduce surgery-related complications after minimally invasive total gastrectomy for gastric cancer.

  • The diversification of the New Deal urban regeneration projects, that started in 2017 in accordance with the "Special Act on Urban Regeneration Activation and Support", generated the increased demand for the accuracy of data-driven diagnosis and project type forecast. Thus, this research was conducted to develop an application model able to identify the most appropriate New Deal project type for "eup", "myeon" and "dong" across the country. Data for application model development were collected through Statistical geographic information service(SGIS) and the 'Urban Regeneration Comprehensive Information Open System' of the Urban Regeneration Information System, and data for the analysis model was constructed through data pre-processing. Four models were derived and simulations were performed through polynomial regression analysis and multinomial logistic regression analysis for the application of the appropriate New Deal project type. I verified the applicability and validity of the four models by the comparative analysis of spatial distribution of the previously selected New Deal projects by targeting the sites located in Seoul by each model and the result showed that the DI-54 model had the highest concordance rate.
