  • The purpose of this study was to investigate how much multi-cultural traits the multiculture-oriented TV programs would have and how they tended to represent it with what kinds of meaning structures. As an object of this study, the authors chose the Program of KBS-TV which had been discussed seriously to raise a multi-cultural issue as well as a sexuality issue of lady guests. They collected 70 weekly programs from Nov. 26 of 2006 to March 31, 2008, and finally selected and analyzed 5 weekly programs as main analytic data. They tried to analyze them with various semiotic research methods, especially, linguistic semiotic research methods and pictorial research methods. As results of this study, it was found that this Program was based on multiful-levels of meaning structure: that is, superficial level, representation level and in-depth level. The superficial level of this program presented various multi-cultural traits through many and various talks of lady guests. Its representation level indicated some patterns of discourses about issues and agendas of the talks among lady guests. The in-depth level was based on the sexuality of lady guests as well as the male-dominant ideology. It was finally implicated that this Program was based on the sexuality and feminity of lady guests even though it tried to advocate its multi-cultural traits.

  • In this study, in order to practice the social inclusion of libraries, the related policies currently announced in the 3rd Comprehensive Library Development Plan were examined, and the current status of tasks promoted by central administrative agencies and metropolitan and provincial libraries was examined based on these policies. As a result, first, in terms of active information welfare realization, various programs and services are being implemented to bridge the knowledge and information gap, but it seems that the scope of the target should be expanded in the future, cooperation with related organizations, and infrastructure improvement. Second, in terms of expanding the openness of the space, the expansion of the open space as an open space and the application of universal design are being performed. In the future, it seems that the scope of universal design application should be expanded in consideration of budget investment for continuous space reconstruction and diversity of users. Third, in terms of linking services across boundaries, services and programs are provided to infants and toddlers, children, women, the elderly, the underprivileged, job seekers, and multicultural families. In the future, it seems that the improvement of the service system for the expansion of inclusive services in libraries should precede, and cooperation between related ministries should be made to provide differentiated services. Finally, it is expected that future policy-making tasks for social inclusion should be considered not only for books, programs, and spaces, but also for librarians' education, establishment of cooperative networks with related organizations, and marketing for services and programs.

  • In this paper, a support plan for marriage immigrants through e-learning was studied. Currently, the number of Korean men marrying foreign women is rapidly increasing due to the increase in the imbalance of gender ratios caused by preference for boys and shunning of rural areas by Korean women. To alleviate this problem, the government is performing various social adaptation programs such as Korean language education and vocational education. Most marriage immigrants, however, are not properly educated as they are burdened by their household duties or work. In this paper, a plan for supporting marriage immigrants through e-learning was researched. To achieve this goal, a survey on intentions of the marriage immigrants to receive muticultural education through e-learning was performed. The result showed that most of marriage immigrants have a strong preference for e-learning. However, there are differences on their preference depending on the original nationality and residential region. A support plan for multicultural education through e-learning was proposed according to the above result. The support plan consists of three parts. First, education for marriage immigrants will be specialized according to their respective original nationality. Second, Korean education will be given greater emphasis in education. Third, vocation education which will benefit marriage immigrants will be prepared. Above support plans are expected to help the marriage immigrants to settle as equal members of the society instead of deteriorating into an underprivileged class by providing them with an opportunity to receive education.

  • This study examined the effect of bilingual bicultural home environment and mother's command of Korean language on their participation in child rearing as well as on children's developmental outcomes. We carried out Analysis of Covariance Structure using the 1st year(2011) data of Gyeonggi Education Welfare Panel, which consists of 459 matched pairs of immigrant women and their 5th~6th grade children living in Gyeonggi-do. The results indicated that when the immigrant mother has good command of Korean language and the children are exposed to their maternal culture and language, mothers tend to actively participate in child rearing and this in turn has positive effects on developmental outcomes of their children. These results demonstrate that Korean language programs targeting immigrant women by marriage are important not only for assisting their employment and adaptation but also for enhancing parenting behaviors in multicultural families. Moreover these findings suggest that we need to understand the bilingual bicultural home environment in these families as a significant resource that contribute to their children's developmental outcomes and not as a risk factor to their adaptation, as it has frequently been viewed.

  • Focusing on increasing of single-person households this study aims to develop a scale to measure the healthiness of lifestyle among single-person households. The concept of healthiness of lifestyle is based on the theories of family strength and family ecology. We draw 50 items that encompass basic needs, individual, familial, and social aspects of single-person life. Using a sample of 317 persons who live alone, this study examined a factor structure of the items and selected 44 items based on the results of factor analysis. Reliability and criterion- and construct validity were also examined. The final scale consists of four domains; basic needs (finance, housing, consumption, and future plan), work·life balance (time management, health, and stress), family relations, and social participation (social network, social interests, and community participation). This scale can be used as an assessment measure of the healthiness of lifestyle of single persons who participate in programs in Healthy and Multicultural Families Support Centers.

  • Purpose: The Korean society has moved rapidly toward becoming a multicultural society. This study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of hepatitis viruses and investigate hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotypic diversity in female marriage immigrants. Materials and Methods: Screening program was conducted at support centers for multicultural families in 21 administrative districts in Korea between July 2011 and January 2017. A total of 963 female marriage immigrants were included in this study. Blood samples were tested for hepatitis viral markers and HBV genotype. Results: Subjects' median age was 33 years (20-40 years), and they originated from nine countries including Vietnam (n=422, 43.8%), China (n=311, 32.3%), the Philippines (n=85, 8.8%), Cambodia (n=58, 6.0%), and Japan (n=39, 4.0%). About 30% (n=288) of subjects required hepatitis A vaccination. HBsAg positive rate was 5.4% (n=52). Positive HBsAg results were the highest in subjects from Southeast Asia (6.6%, n=38). Anti-HBs positive rate was 60.4% (n=582). About 34% (n=329) of subjects who were negative for anti-HBs and HBsAg required HBV vaccinations. Genotypes B and C were found in 54.6% (n=12) and 45.4% (n=10) of the 22 subjects with HBV, in whom genotypes were tested. Eight (0.8%) subjects were positive for anti-HCV. Positive anti-HCV results were the highest in subjects from Central Asia (7.9%, n=3). Conclusion: Testing for hepatitis viral marker (hepatitis A virus IgG and HBsAg/anti-HBs) is needed for female marriage immigrants. Especially, HBV genotype B is different from genotype C of Koreans. Therefore, interest and attention to vaccination programs for female marriage immigrants are necessary for both clinicians and public health institutes.
