  • In this paper, a new method for reducing harmonic in input AC line currents of converter presents, which is the multi-pulse converter circuit without the input transformer. This system can reduce the harmonic like conventional 12-pulse converter. Both the bridge circuits are controlled with the shifted firing angle and connected 2 tap inter-phase reactor. Using 2 tap changing on inter-phase reactor, the input current is controlled with the different two values in order to make the input current waveform 12 pulses.

  • This paper proposes a new configuration of 36-pulse voltage source converter which consists of two 6-pulse bridges and a pulse-interleaving auxiliary circuit. The system topology of proposed converter was derived to increase the pulse number of converter output voltage without increasing the number of 6-pulse bridges. The gate pulse generation was analyzed using the theoretical approach of multi-pulse switching converter, The operational feasibility of proposed system was verified by computer simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC software and experimental works with 2kVA hardware prototype. The proposed converter can be widely used for the uninterruptible power supply, the power quality compensator, and the distributed power generation, such as solar and fuel cell power system.

  • This paper proposes a novel control method for a multi-output switched-resonant converter. Output voltage can be regulated against variations in the supply voltage and load by controlling the voltage of the resonant capacitor (pulse amplitude control). Precise control is possible when pulse amplitude control is combined with pulse number control. The converter is analyzed, and design considerations are explained by using examples. Control implementation is described and load regulation and ripples are analyzed by simulation and hardware results. The topology is modified to obtain an additional negative output without any additional hardware other than a diode. The analysis of such a triple output converter with two positive outputs and one negative output is conducted and confirmed. The topology and control scheme are scalable to any number of outputs.

  • This paper presents a buck-boost converter-based bipolar pulse generator, which is able to generate bipolar exponential pulses across a resistive load. The concept of the proposed approach depends on operating the involved buck-boost converters in discontinuous current conduction mode with high-voltage gain and enhanced efficiency. A full design of the pulse generator and its passive components is presented to ensure generating the pulses with the desired specifications (rise time, pulse width, and pulse magnitude) for a given load resistance and input dc voltage. In case of moderate pulsed output voltages (i.e. few of kV), one module of the presented bipolar generator can be employed. While in case of high-voltage pulsed output, multi-module version can be employed, where each module is fed from an isolated dc source and their outputs are connected in series. Simulation models for the proposed approach are built to elucidate their performance in case of one-module as well as multi-module based generator. Finally, a scaled-down prototype for one-module of buck-boost converter-based bipolar pulse generator is implemented to validate the proposed concept.

  • This paper presents a new approach to obtaining a reduced-order model for multi-module converters. The proposed approach can be used to derive the reduced-order model for a wide class of multi-module converters including pulse-width-modulated (PWM) converters, soft-switched PWM converters, and resonant converters. The reduced-order model has the structure of a conventional single-module converter while preserving the dynamics of the original multi-module converter. Derivation procedures and the use of the reduced-order model is demonstrated using a three-module boost converter.

  • This paper presents an optimal initial firing angle control based on the energy consumption and regenerative energy of a parallel multi-pulse thyristor dual converter for urban railway power substations. To prevent short circuiting the thyristor dual converter, a hysteresis band for maintaining a zero-current discontinuous section (ZCDS) is essential during mode changes. During conversion from the ZCDS to forward or reverse mode, the DC trolley voltage can be stabilized by selecting the optimal initial firing angle without an overshoot and slow response. However, the optimal initial firing angle is different depending on the line impedance of each converter. Therefore, the control algorithm for tracking the optimal initial firing angle is proposed to eliminate the overshoot and slow response of DC trolley voltage. Simulations and experiments show that the proposed algorithm yields the fastest DC voltage control performance in the transient state by tracking the optimal firing angle.

  • This paper proposes an 18-step back-to-back (BTB) voltage source converter using four sets of 3-Level converter modules with auxiliary circuits to increase the number of steps. The proposed BTB voltage source converter has the independent control capability of active power and reactive power at the interconnected ac system. The operational feasibility of the proposed BTB converter was verified through many simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC software. The feasibility of hardware implementation was verified through experimental results with a scaled hardware prototype. The proposed BTB converter could be widely applied for interconnecting the renewable energy source to the power grid.
