SIMP is an international project funded by INTAS aimed at improving the information content, which can be inferred from multi-sensor satellite imagery of marine coastal areas. Scientific teams from Germany, UK, Portugal, and Russia focus on the development of novel tools for marine remote sensing of the coastal zone. In particular, the project teams' benefit from the fact that surface films may enhance the signatures of hydrodynamic processes such as plumes, internal waves, eddies, etc., on microwave, optical, and infrared imagery. The project's objectives are to develop a robust methodology for identifying slick-related phenomena/processes through their surface signatures and thereby, to improve the discrimination capabilities between slicks and other oceanic and atmospheric phenomena by taking into account information gained from satellite imagery quasi-simultaneously recorded at microwave, visible and IR wavelengths. The results of the two project years are summarized. Examples are given for the project’s web presentation, laboratory and field experiments, and of the analyses of various satellite data.

In this research article, scheduling a casting sequence in a job-shop type foundry involving a variety of casts made of an identical alloy but with different shapes and II weights, has been investigated. The objective is to produce the assigned mixed orders satisfying due dates and obtaining the highest ingot efficiency simultaneously. Implementing simple integer programming instead of complicated genetic algorithms accompanying rigorous calculations proves that it can provide a feasible solution with a high accuracy for a complex, multi-variable and multi-constraint optimization problem. Enhancing the ingot efficiency under the constraint of discrete ingot sizes is accomplished by using a simple and intelligible algorithm in a standard integer programming. Employing this simple methodology, a job-shop type foundry is able to maximize the furnace utilization and minimize ingot waste.

In this study, a new architecture and comprehensive design methodology of genetically optimized Multi-layer Fuzzy Neural Networks (gMFNN) are introduced and a series of numeric experiments are carried out. The gMFNN architecture results from a synergistic usage of the hybrid system generated by combining Fuzzy Neural Networks (FNN) with Polynomial Neural Networks (PNN), FNN contributes to the formation of the premise part of the overall network structure of the gMFNN. The consequence part of the gMFNN is designed using PNN.

Over the past 20 years, Researchers have tried to develop "Integration Model of Cost and Schedule" in construction industry. They suggested various models and techniques, however, it is still required to develop new methodology for AL Form Work in Public Multi-Housing Projects. Accordingly, this research focused on measuring quantity take-offs of on-going projects and analysing the basic process of using the resources(Labor, Material, Plant) related to cost and time data. There are 3 steps of this research : 1) The literature review of previous studies about Integration Model of Cost and Schedule was conducted. 2) Model for integration between cost and schedule was developed. 3) the accuracy of developed model was verified. The results are expected to improve in integrated managing the cost and schedule data of AL form work.
A general methodology is suggested to solve shelf-space allocation problem of retailers. A multi-item inventory model of breakable items is developed, where items are either complementary or substitute. Demands of the items depend on the amount of stock on the showroom and unit price of the respective items. Also demand of one item decreases (increases) due to the presence of others in case of substitute (complementary) product. For such a model, a Contractive Mapping Genetic Algorithm (CMGA) has been developed and implemented to find the values of different decision variables. These are evaluated to have maximum possible profit out of the proposed system. The system has been illustrated numerically and results for some particular cases are derived. The results are compared with some other heuristic approaches- Simulated Annealing (SA), simple Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Greedy Search Approach (GSA) developed for the present model.

This paper describes an intelligent user interface to define simulation models from the process and resource models. It also explains an automatic program generator of discrete event simulation model for shop floor control in a flexible manufacturing system. Especially, the paper is focused on the design and development of methodology to automate simulation modeling from the system description. Describing a shop floor control system in simulation is not an easy task since it must resolve various decision problems such as deadlock resolution, part dispatching, resource conflict resolution, etc. The program generator should be capable of constructing a complete discrete simulation models for a multi-product and multi-stage flow shop containing the above mentioned problems.
Our objective is to model static multi-cracking processes in concrete. The explicit dynamic relaxation (DR) method, which gives the solutions of non-linear static problems on the basis of the steady-state conditions of a critically damped explicit transient solution, is chosen to deal with the high geometric and material non-linearities stemming from such a complex fracture problem. One of the common difficulties of the DR method is its slow convergence rate when non-monotonic spectral response is involved. A modified concept that is distinct from the standard DR method is introduced to tackle this problem. The methodology is validated against the stable three point bending test on notched concrete beams of different sizes. The simulations accurately predict the experimental load-displacement curves. The size effect is caught naturally as a result of the calculation. Micro-cracking and non-uniform crack propagation across the fracture surface also come out directly from the 3D simulations.
A prototype integrated system and its theories for distributed SISO control structure synthesis of complete chemical plants is developed. The scope of this work includes control structure synthesis not only of simple units with unspecified control loops but also of the complex process at preliminary and basic design stage. Hierarchical approach and dual-decomposition strategy (that is multi-layer decomposition and multi-echelon decomposition) is applied to this system. Because automatic control structure synthesis of complex plants is a problem defined as a series of knowledge-intensive tasks within multiple spaces, the established methodology is complemented by not only techniques from knowledge-based expert systems but also shortcut and rigorous control theories. This system is used for education of control designers, process engineers, operators and students as well as for operability studying, in-line and on-line process control structure synthesis.

This paper presents an observer design methodology for a special class of multi input multi output(MIMO) nonlinear systems. First, we characterize the class of MIMO nonlinear systems with a triangular structure. Also, the observability matrices that plays an important role in proving the convergence of the proposed observer are generalized to MIMO systems. By using the generalized observability matrices, it is shown that under the boundedness conditions of system state and input, the proposed observer guarantees the local exponential convergence to zero of the estimation error.
Optimization methodologies have been proposed of find the best environment-friendly recycling pathways of plastic materials based on life-cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The main difficulty in conducting this optimization study is that multiple environmental burdens have to be considered simultaneously as the cost functions. Instead of generating conservative Pareto or noninferior solutions following multi-objective optimization approaches, we have proposed some practical criteria on how to combine the different environmental burdens into a single measure. The obtained single objective optimization problem can then be solved by conventional nonlinear programming techniques or, more effectively, by a tree search method based on decision flows. The latter method reduces multi-dimensional optimization problems to a set of one-dimensional problems in series. It is expected the suggested tree search approach can be applied to many LCA studies as a new promising optimization tool.
