Vertically aligned arrays of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) on layered Si substrates have been synthesized by water-assisted thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD). We studied changes in growth by parameters of growth temperature, growth time, rates of gas and annealing time of catalyst. Also, We grew CNTs by adding a little amount of water vapor to enhance the growth of CNTs. $H_2$, Ar, and $C_2H_2$ were used as carrier gas and feedstock, respectively. Before growth, Fe served as catalyst, underneath which AI were coated as an underlayer and a diffusion barrier, respectively, on the Si substrate. The water vapor had a greater effect on the growth of CNTs on a smaller thickness of catalyst. When the water vapor was introduced, the growth of CNTs was enhanced than without water. CNTs grew 1.29 mm for 10 min long by adding the water vapor, while CNTs were 0.73 mm long without water vapor for the same period of time. CNTs grew up to 1.97 mm for 30 min prior to growth termination under adding water vapor. As-grown CNTs were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and Raman spectroscopy.

Carbon nanotubes(CNT) have excellent electrical, chemical stability and mechanical properties. These can be used in a variety of fields. MWCNT are extremely sensitive for minute changes in the ambient gas, namely, their sensing properties varies greatly with the absorption of gas such as NOx and $H_2$. We investigate the electrical properties of CNTs and make a NOx gas sensor based on Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) materials. We obtained the NOx gas sensor of MWCNT based on P-type Si wafer that has the resistivity of $1.667{\times}10^{-1}[{\Omega}{\cdot}cm]$. We knew that the sensitivity of sensor decreased with increasing of NOx gas concentration. And the sensitivity of sensor shows the largest value at $20^{\circ}C$. The sensitivity of sensor decrease with increasing the temperature. Also absorption energy of NOx gas molecule on the MWCNT surface decreases with increasing concentration of NOx gas.
In this research, the application of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) modified PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) membrane was tested as a simply and beginning attempt to overcome membrane fouling because CNTs importantly affect the transport of natural organic matter (NOM). Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) as the representative of NOM was selected and its sorption results with single-walled CNT (SWCNT), multi-walled CNT (MWCNT), and oxidized MWCNT (O-MWCNT) were obtained through the batch experiment. SRFA sorption isotherms had a strong nonlinearity and its sorption capacity followed the order O-MWCNT < MWCNT < SWCNT. The adsorbed mass of SRFA on each CNT decreased as a function of pH due to their charge repulsion. For the CNT-PVDF membrane filtration experiments, the suspended CNT solution (10 mg/40 mL) was incorporated into $0.45{\mu}m$-PVDF membrane and 5 mg/L of SRFA solution was monitored using UV detector connected with high pressure pump after passing through CNT-PVDF membrane. The SRFA removal efficiency by MWCNT-PVDF membrane was the strongest among other modified membranes. This suggests that the CNT modified microfiltration (MF) membrane might effectively and selectively apply to treat the contaminated water including organic compounds in the presence of NOM.
Carbon nanotubes are drawing wide attention of research communities and several industries due to their versatile capabilities covering mechanical and other multi-physical properties. However, owing to extreme operating conditions of the synthesis process of these nanostructures, they are often imposed with certain inevitable structural deformities such as single vacancy and nanopore defects. These random irregularities limit the intended functionalities of carbon nanotubes severely. In this article, we investigate the mechanical behaviour of double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) under the influence of arbitrarily distributed single vacancy and nanopore defects in the outer wall, inner wall, and both the walls. Large-scale molecular simulations reveal that the nanopore defects have more detrimental effects on the mechanical behaviour of DWCNTs, while the defects in the inner wall of DWCNTs make the nanostructures more vulnerable to withstand high longitudinal deformation. From a different perspective, to exploit the mechanics of damage for achieving defect-induced shape modulation and region-wise deformation control, we have further explored the localized longitudinal and transverse spatial effects of DWCNT by designing the defects for their regional distribution. The comprehensive numerical results of the present study would lead to the characterization of the critical mechanical properties of DWCNTs under the presence of inevitable intrinsic defects along with the aspect of defect-induced spatial modulation of shapes for prospective applications in a range of nanoelectromechanical systems and devices.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have shown great potential for the reinforcement of polymers or fiber-reinforced composites. In this study, mechanical properties of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT)-filled plain-weave glass/epoxy composites intended for use in radar absorbing structures were evaluated with regard to filler loading, microstructure, and fiber volume fraction. The plain-weave composites containing MWNTs exhibited improved matrix-dominant and interlaminar fracture-related properties, that is, compressive and interlaminar shear strength. This is attributed to strengthening of the matrix rich region and the interface between glass yarns by the MWNTs. However, tensile properties were only slightly affected by the addition of MWNTs, as they are fiber-dominant properties.
In this study, an empirical relationship between the energy band gap of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and synthesis parameters in a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactor using factorial design of experiment was established. A bimetallic (Fe-Ni) catalyst supported on $CaCO_3$ was synthesized via wet impregnation technique and used for MWCNT growth. The effects of synthesis parameters such as temperature, time, acetylene flow rate, and argon carrier gas flow rate on the MWCNTs energy gap, yield, and aspect ratio were investigated. The as-prepared supported bimetallic catalyst and the MWCNTs were characterized for their morphologies, microstructures, elemental composition, thermal profiles and surface areas by high-resolution scanning electron microscope, high resolution transmission electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, thermal gravimetry analysis and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller. A regression model was developed to establish the relationship between band gap energy, MWCNTs yield and aspect ratio. The results revealed that the optimum conditions to obtain high yield and quality MWCNTs of 159.9% were: temperature ($700^{\circ}C$), time (55 min), argon flow rate ($230.37mL\;min^{-1}$) and acetylene flow rate ($150mL\;min^{-1}$) respectively. The developed regression models demonstrated that the estimated values for the three response variables; energy gap, yield and aspect ratio, were 0.246 eV, 557.64 and 0.82. The regression models showed that the energy band gap, yield, and aspect ratio of the MWCNTs were largely influenced by the synthesis parameters and can be controlled in a CVD reactor.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have excellent electrical, chemical stability, mechanical and thermal properties. In this paper, networks of Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) materials were investigated as resistive gas sensors for ethanol ($C_2H_5OH$) detection. Sensor films were fabricated by air spray method for the multi-walled CNTs solution on glass substrates. Sensors were characterized by resistance measurements in the sensing system, in order to find the optimum detection properties for the ethanol gas molecular. The film that was sprayed with the MWCNT dispersion for 60 see, was 300 nm thick. And the electric resistivity is $2{\times}10^{-2}\;{\Omega\cdot}cm$. Also, the sensitivity and the linearity of MWVNT sensor for ethanol gas are 0.389 %/sec and 17.541 %/FS, respectively. The MWCNT film was excellent in the response for the ethanol gas molecules and its reaction speed was very fast, which could be using as ethanol gas sensor. The conductance of the fabricated sensors decreases when the sensors are exposed to ethanol gas.
We describe the fabrication and characterization of a doubly clamped multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT). The device was assembled by an application of electric field in solution. The MWNT was clamped on end of metal trench electrodes in solution and deposited with additional platinum (Pt) on edge of electrode for firmly suspending the MWNT by focused ion beam (FIB). The MWNTs range of diameter and length were 100 to 150 nm and 1.5 to $2{\mu}m$, respectively. Electrical characteristics of fabricated devices were measured by I-V curve and impedance analysis. The mechanical deformation was observed by resistivity in high air pressure. Resonant frequency around 6.8 MHz was detected and resistivity was linearly varied according to the magnitude of air pressure. This device could have potential applications in nanoelectronics and various sensors.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have excellent electrical, chemical stability, mechanical and thermal properties. In this paper, networks of Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) materials were investigated as a resistive gas sensors for the $H_2$ gas detection. Sensor films were fabricated by the air spray method using the multi-walled CNTs dispersion solution on the glass substrates cured with plasma and nitrocellulose. Sensors were characterized by the resistance measurements in the self-fabricated oven in order to find the optimum detection properties for the hydrogen gas molecular. The sensitivity and the linearity of the MWVNT sensors using the glass substrate cured with plasma for the $H_2$ gas concentration of 0.06~0.6 ppm are 0.013~0.097%/sec and 0.131~0.959%FS, respectively. The MWCNT film was excellent in the response for the hydrogen gas moleculars and its reaction speed was very fast, which could be using as hydrogen gas sensor. The resistance of the fabricated sensors decreases when the sensors are exposed to $H_2$ gas.
In this paper, the properties of strain sensors made of spin-capable multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were characterized and their sensing mechanisms analyzed. The key contribution of this paper is a new fabrication technique that introduces a simpler transfer method compared to spin-coating or dispersion CNT. Resistance of the MWCNT sheet strain sensor increased linearly with higher strain. To investigate the effect of CNT concentration on sensitivity, two strain sensors with different layer numbers of MWCNT sheets (one and three layers) were fabricated. According to the results, the sensor with a three-layer sheet showed higher sensitivity than that with one layer. In addition, experiments were conducted to examine the effects of environmental factors, temperature, and gas on sensor sensitivity. An increase in temperature resulted in a reduction in sensor sensitivity. It was also observed that ambient gas influenced the properties of the MWCNT sheet due to charge transfer. Experimental results showed that there was a linear change in resistance in response to strain, and the resistance of the sensor fully recovered to its unstressed state and exhibited stable electromechanical properties.
