  • The three-dimensional spatial structures of impeller flow created by a six bladed Rushton turbine have identified based on the volumetric velocity information from multi-plane stereoscopic PIV measurements. A total of 10 planes with 2 mm space with a 50 mm by 64 mm size of the field of view were targeted. To reduce the depth of focus, we adopted an angle offset configuration which satisfied the Scheimpflug condition. The distortion compensation procedure was utilized during the in situ calibration. Phase-locked instantaneous data were ensemble averaged and interpolated in order to obtain mean 3-D, volumetric velocity fields on a 60 degree sector of a cylindrical ring volume enclosing the turbine blade. Using the equi-vorticity surface rendering, the spatial structure of the trailing vortices was clearly demonstrated. Detail flow characteristics of the radial jet reported in previous studies of mixer flows were easily identified.

  • This paper presents a novel video metrology approach based on robust tracking. From videos acquired by an uncalibrated stationary camera, the foreground likelihood map is obtained by using the Codebook background modeling algorithm, and the multiple moving objects are tracked by a combined tracking algorithm. Then, we compute vanishing line of the ground plane and the vertical vanishing point of the scene, and extract the head feature points and the feet feature points in each frame of video sequences. Finally, we apply a single view mensuration algorithm to each of the frames to obtain height measurements and fuse the multi-frame measurements using RANSAC algorithm. Compared with other popular methods, our proposed algorithm does not require calibrating the camera, and can track the multiple moving objects when occlusion occurs. Therefore, it reduces the complexity of calculation and improves the accuracy of measurement simultaneously. The experimental results demonstrate that our method is effective and robust to occlusion.

  • In the area of optoelectronic devices based on GaN and related ternary compounds, the two-dimensional system like as quantum wells (QWs) has been investigated as an effective structure for improving the light-emitting efficiency. Generally, the quantum well active regions in III-nitride light-emitting diodes grown on conventional c-plane sapphire substrates have critical problems given by the quantum confined Stark effect (QCSE) due to the effects of strong piezoelectric and spontaneous polarizations. However, the QWs grown on nonpolar templates are free from the QCSE since the polar-axis lies within the growth plane of the template. Also the unique characteristic of linear polarized light emission from nonpolar QW structures is attracting attentions because it is proper to the application of back-light units of liquid crystal display. In this study, we characterized optical properties of the a-plane InGaN/GaN QW structures by temperature-dependent photoluminescence (TDPL) measurements. From the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum measured at 300 K, green emission centered at 520 nm was observed for the QW region. Since indium incorporation on nonpolar QWs is lower than that on c-plane, this high indium-doping on a-plane InGaN QWs is not common. Therefore, the effect of high indium composition on optical properties in a-plane InGaN QWs will be extensively studied.

  • A new transmission line parameter extraction method of iC interconnects on silicon substrate is presented. To extract the acurate parameters, the silicon substrate effects were taken into account. Since the electromagnetic fields under the silicon substrate are propagated with slow wave mode, effective dielectric constant and different ground plane with the multi-layer dielectric structures were employed for inductance and capacitance matrix determination. Then accurate signal transients simulation were performed with HSPICE by using the parameters. It was shown that the simulation resutls has an excellent agreement with TDR/TDT measurements.

  • The holographic velocimetry system has a significant potential for the measurements of three dimensional velocities of particles. In this study, orthogonal two-side holography system was developed to obtain three dimensional velocities and sizes of spray droplets. To get high quality of reconstructed images, singe-exposure holography at two time moments and two orthogonal sides was adopted instead of multi-exposure, single-side holography. From three dimensional positions of droplets determined by reconstruction and image processing system, the three dimensional velocities and sizes of each droplet was extracted using the PTV algorithm. To determine the position of particles in the optical axis, a new focusing parameter was introduced based on the correlation between two droplet images at the same distance. The measured results by holography system were compared with those by the PDPA.

  • High crystalline nonpolar a-plane (11-20) nitride light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been fabricated on r-plane (1-102) sapphire substrates by metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition (MOCVD). The multi-quantum wells (MQWs) active region is consists of 4 periods the nonpolar a-plane InGaN/GaN(a-InGaN/GaN) on a high quality a-plane GaN (a-GaN) template grown by using the multibuffer layer technique. The full widths at half maximum (FWHMs) of x-ray rocking curve (XRC) obtained from phiscan of the specimen that was grown up to nonpolar a-plane GaN LED layers with double crystal x-ray diffraction. The FWHM values were decreased down to 477 arc sec for $0^{\circ}$ and 505 arc sec for $-90^{\circ}$, respectively. After fabricating a conventional lateral LED chip which size was $300{\times}600{\mu}m^2$, we measured the optical output power by on-wafer measurements. N-electrode was made with Cr/Au contact, and ITO on p-GaN was formed with Ohmic contact using Ni/Au followed by inductively coupled plasma etching for mesa isolation. The optical output power of 1.08 mW was obtained at drive current of 20 mA with the peak emission wavelength of 502 nm.

  • In this paper, a selective area growth (SAG) of a GaN/AlGaN double heterostructure (DH) has been performed on r-plane sapphire substrate by using the mixed-source hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) with multi-sliding boat system. The SAG-GaN/AlGaN DH consists of GaN buffer layer, Te-doped AlGaN n-cladding layer, GaN active layer, Mg-doped AlGaN p-cladding layer, and Mg-doped GaN p-capping layer. The electroluminescence (EL) characteristics show an emission peak of wavelength, 439 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of approximately 0.64 eV at 20 mA. The I-V measurements show that the turn-on voltage of the SAG-GaN/AlGaN DH is 3.4 V at room temperature. We found that the mixed-source HVPE method with a multi-sliding boat system was one of promising growth methods for III-Nitride LEDs.

  • In this paper, the measurement method of the decoupling performance of a underwater decoupling material is studied. First, the simple vibro-acoustic coupled model of a multi-layered underwater decoupling material attached to a plate is analytically derived using impedance transfer matrix. Two test methods are introduced using the theoretical expression of the simple model. One is based on the ratio of the plate vibration and the radiated pressure under impact excitation of the plate. The other is based on the reciprocity theorem and uses the ratio of the incident pressure and the plate vibration under projector excitation in water. Some measurements are carried out according to the test methods using a pulse tube. The test results show the advantages and disadvantages of two methods. It is also shown that the combination of impact and projector excitation methods may be a useful tool to evaluate the performance of a underwater decoupling material.

  • This paper reports a novel structural health monitoring (SHM) technique for detecting de-bonding between a concrete beam and CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) sheet that is attached to the concrete surface. To achieve this, a multi-scale actuated sensing system with a self-sensing circuit using piezoelectric active sensors is applied to the CFRP laminated concrete beam structure. In this self-sensing based multi-scale actuated sensing, one scale provides a wide frequency-band structural response from the self-sensed impedance measurements and the other scale provides a specific frequency-induced structural wavelet response from the self-sensed guided wave measurement. To quantify the de-bonding levels, the supervised learning-based statistical pattern recognition was implemented by composing a two-dimensional (2D) plane using the damage indices extracted from the impedance and guided wave features.
