Optimization of extrusion process for long-length multi-filaments of BSCCO 2223 superconductor tape (고온초전도 BSCC02223 장선재 제조를 위한 압출공정의 최적화)

  • The extrusion process for long-length multi-filaments of BSCCO 2223 superconductor tape has been investigated with aids of Finite Element Method and experimental inspection. Since the arrangement of filaments in matrix material has characteristic of rotational symmetry, a 2-dimensional commercial FEM package, DEFORM-2D, was adopted to simulate extrusion process with different variables such as hardness of sheath material, lengths of each filament and arrangement. From the FEM analysis, since the inner filaments move faster than the outer one, distribution of filaments is needed to be optimized. In the case of pure Ag matrix, undesirable non-uniform distribution of filament was obtained due to low hardness of sheath material. Dummy sample(brass (sheath) and talc powder(filament)), however, which has relatively high hardness of sheath material, had been produced with desirable results. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize hardness of sheath material, extrusion temperature and billet design.

A Study on the Sealing Characteristics of Multi-contact O-rings (다접오링의 밀봉특성 해석에 관한 연구)

  • This study presents sealing characteristics of multi-contact o-rings as functions of strain, compression stress, and contact normal stress using a FEM technique. The FEM results on the sealing characteristics show that the maximum strain, maximum compression stress, and maximum contact normal stress of multi-contact o-rings are approximately 1.7 times higher than those of conventional o-rings. This is due to a U-grooved cross section of multi-contact o-rings, and the multi-contact o-rings with a U-groove show more effective in sealing for high pressure vessels, valves, and gas equipments. And the extrusion failure in the multi- contact o-ring does not produce for an increased gas pressure due to a U-groove. This may extend sealing life compared to that of a conventional o-ring.

  • Metal additive manufacturing (AM) technologies are classified into two groups according to the consolidation mechanisms and densification degrees of the as-built parts. Densified parts are obtained via a single-step process such as powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, and sheet lamination AM technologies. Conversely, green bodies are consolidated with the aid of binder phases in multi-step processes such as binder jetting and material extrusion AM. Green-body part shapes are sustained by binder phases, which are removed for the debinding process. Chemical and/or thermal debinding processes are usually devised to enhance debinding kinetics. The pathways to final densification of the green parts are sintering and/or molten metal infiltration. With respect to innovation types, the multi-step metal AM process allows conventional powder metallurgy manufacturing to be innovated continuously. Eliminating cost/time-consuming molds, enlarged 3D design freedom, and wide material selectivity create opportunities for the industrial adoption of multi-step AM technologies. In addition, knowledge of powders and powder metallurgy fuel advances of multi-step AM technologies. In the present study, multi-step AM technologies are briefly introduced from the viewpoint of the entire manufacturing lifecycle.

Fabrication of Continuously Porous Alumina Bodies by Multi-Extrusion Process and their In-vitro and In-vivo Study for Biocompatibility (다중압출공정을 이용한 알루미나 연속다공질체 제조 및 그의 생체친화성 평가를 위한 In-vitro, In-vivo 실험)

  • To fabricate the continuously porous alumina bodies by multi-extrusion process, carbon powder and ethylene vinyl acetate were used as a pore forming agent and a binder, respectively. As the change of extrusion pass number, reduction ratio as well as the volume fraction of core and tube, the porous alumina bodies having various kind of pore size and porosity could be obtained. The porous bodies showed continuous pore shape, high specific surface as well as high bending strength, which were compared with those of commercial alumina bodies. In-vitro study was carried out using MG-63 osteoblast cells to investigate of their biocompatibility. As a result, the cells grew well on top and bottom as well as inside surface of pore. From the result of in-vivo study of 3-dimensional porous alumina bodies using rats, it was confirmed that any inflammatory response was not found in the subcutaneous tissue around porous body. Also the porous bodies removed from the rats were fully covered with well-developed fibrous tissues and showed the formation of new capillary blood vessels.

  • In the previous experimental study about extru-bending of angle product, the bending of extruded angle products with the '${\wedge}$' section and 'ㄱ' section can be abtained by the hot metal extru-bending machine with the two punches moving in the different velocity. The bending curvature can be controlled by the different velocity of billets through the two-hole container. This paper describes simulation of extru-bending process by the difference of punch velocities. The result of the forming simulation by $DEFORM^{TM}-3D$ shows that the bending phenomenon at the die exit during extrusion can be abtained by the two punches moving in the different velocity. And it is possible to design extrusion dies and to control the curvature of product through the simulation of extru-bending process by analysis

Characterization and influence of shear flow on the surface resistivity and mixing condition on the dispersion quality of multi-walled carbon nanotube/polycarbonate nanocomposites

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/polycarbonate (PC) nanocomposite was prepared by direct melt mixing to investigate the effect of the shear rate on the surface resistivity of the nanocomposites. In this study, an experiment was carried out to observe the shear induced orientation of the MWCNT in the polymer matrix using a very simple melt flow indexer with various loads. The compression-molded, should be eliminated. MWCNT/PC nanocomposite sample exhibited lower percolation thresholds (at 0.8 vol%) and higher electrical conductivity values than those of samples extruded by capillary and injection molding. Shear induced orientation of MWCNT was observed via scanning electron microscopy, in the direction of flow in a PC matrix during the extrusion process. The surface resistivity rose with increasing shear rate, because of the breakdown of the network junctions between MWCNTs. For real applications such as injection molding and the extrusion process, the amount of the MWCNT in the composite should be carefully selected to adjust the electrical conductivity.

  • This paper has executed FE-analysis to review the feasibility for developing the process, which produces the narrow-cubic type cans, using the Backward Impact Extrusion process instead of using current process, multi-stage deep drawing. Proposes an analysis method by applying ALE(Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) description to non-axisymmetric extrusion. which is appreciated as one of good solution to mesh distortion in case of the large deformation plasticity process that has mass flux, and considers the factors which affects forming-loads related to punch velocity and fulid status of material.

  • In order to, simultaneously, synthesize and control the size of microstructure of amorphous/crystalline composites, a repeated extrusion process was performed using the gas atomized $Cu_{54}Ni_6Zr_{22}Ti_{18}$ metallic glass powders and the crystalline brasses. The size of microstructure in the resultant composites was varied depending on the pass of extrusion as well as on the area reduction ratio. The microstructure could be estimated using an equation of $r_n=r_{n-1}/R^{1/2}$, where R is reduction ratio and $r_n$ is the resultant radius of the extruded bar after n pass. Theory of microstructural refinement as well as the relationship between the resultant microstructures and mechanical properties was discussed.

  • In case of aluminum-cased battery, The ratio of height and base of square is generally above the ten times, square-shaped and problem of non-axis symmetry. It is typical model to set up the analysis method of finite element. The reliable analysis of finite element method is suggested, which is used to investigate the possibility that multi-stage deep drawing and ironing used currently is replaced by backward impact extrusion favorable in the respect of cost production and productivity. The influence of parameter was analyzed and compared, which was considered to analyze the process of large deformation plasticity such as extrusion. Die and billet was made as the same shape of finite element model. The results of experiment show good forming without the rupture and wrinkles with the optimum velocity 100mm/sec obtained by analysis.

Experimental Study on Multi-Stage Cold Forging for an Outer Race of a CV Joint (등속조인트용 외륜의 다단 냉간 단조공정에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This study deals with a series of experimental investigations on multi-stage cold forging of an outer race used for a constant velocity (CV) joint with six inner ball grooves. The multi-stage cold forging, which consists of forward extrusion, upsetting, backward extrusion, and combined sizing-necking including ironing, was used to produce a prototype of the outer race. The cold forging tools such as forging punches and dies required in this multi-stage cold forging were also designed and fabricated. For the combined sizing-necking, especially, the longitudinally six-segmentallized punches were developed to easily eject from the necked inner groove of the outer race with consideration of the operating mechanism. Spheroidized SCr420H billet was used in the experimental study. To verify the suitability of the proposed process, the obtained parts were obtained from each forging operation, and the geometries were compared with the target dimensions. It was confirmed that the outer race with six inner ball grooves was well forged by adopting the proposed multi-stage cold forging, and the dimensional accuracy of the forged outer race matched well with the requirements.
