Improved Vertically-Aligned Nematic Mode for High Performance Displays

  • This paper presents an improved vertical alignment nematic liquid crystal mode characterized by the protrusions or slits of the top substrate and additional stripe type common electrodes with polarity switching of the bottom substrate to improve multi-domain vertically aligned (MVA) and patterned vertically aligned (PVA) nematic modes. MVA and PVA modes have disadvantages such as an LC disclination in the vicinity of the middle region of electrodes between the top and bottom protrusions in MVA mode or the top and bottom slits in PVA mode. Therefore, the stripe type common electrode generating a horizontal electric field and the protrusion or slit producing some pretilt of liquid crystals (LCs) were used to improve the LC disclination, which influences the transmittance and response speed. The simulation results showed that the proposed VA mode has higher transmittance than the MVA and PVA modes. As a result, the proposed VA mode can improve the response speed and transmittance remarkably, which makes it useful for upgrading the LCD display quality.

  • Polypyrrole (PPy)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/conductive carbon (CC) composites are synthesized by the chemical oxidative polymerization method. The morphology analysis of the composite materials indicates uniform coating of PPy over MWCNTs and conductive carbon. The electrochemical performances of PPy/MWCNT/CC composites with different compositions are evaluated in order to optimize the composition of the composite electrode. Galvanostatic chargedischarge measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies prove the excellent cycling stability of the PPy/MWCNT/CC composite electrodes.

  • A multiple-electrode-type electronic paper film can implement a single color and control the transparency, as it has multiple electrodes in one cell. Therefore, it can be used as a transparent display. In this paper, we explain the structure and driving method of a transparent electronic paper display, and then propose a control method of transmittance. Subsequently, we verify the theory by measuring the transmittance via experiment. Thus, by changing the manner of applying the voltage to three lower electrodes and one upper electrode, transmittance in eight cases could be realized. It was confirmed that the transmittance derived from the experiment could be controlled from a minimum of 6.75% to a maximum of 71.18%.

  • Activated carbon (AC) with very large surface area has high capacitance per weight. However, such activation methods tend to suffer from low yields, below 50%, and are low in electrode density and capacitance per volume. Carbon NanoFibers (CNFs) had high surface area polarizability, high electrical conductivity and chemical stability, as well as extremely high mechanical strength and modulus, which make them an important material for electrochemical capacitors. The electrochemical properties of immobilized CNF electrodes were studied for use as in electrical double layer capacitor (EDLC) applications. Immobilized CNFs on Ni foam grown by thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) were successfully fabricated. CNFs had a uniform diameter range from 50 to 60 nm. Surface area was 56 m$^2$/g. CNF electrodes were compared with AC and multi wall carbon nanotube (MWNT) electrodes. The electrochemical performance of the various electrodes was examined with aqueous electrolyte of 2M KOH. Equivalent series resistance (ESR) of the CNF electrodes was lower than that of AC and MWNT electrodes. The specific capacitance of 47.5 F/g of the CNF electrodes was achieved with discharge current density of 1 mA/cm$^2$.

  • Multi-discharge type ozonizer(MDO) using superposed silent discharge has been designed and manufactured. It consists of three electrodes( central electrode, internal electrode, and external electrode ) and double gaps( gap between central electrode and internal electrode, gap between internal electrode and external electrode ). Therefore, ozone is generated by superposing silent discharges generated between the gaps respectively. And the MDO consists of three types of superposed discharge ozonizers according to voltage appling method for each electrode ; A.C. high voltages are applied two of three electrodes with phase difference of 180[˚], the other electrode is a ground. This paper describes that discharge and ozone generation characteristics of MDO which comprising central electrode and internal electrode applied A.C. high voltages with phase difference of 180[˚] respectively, and the grounded external electrode. As a result, the maximum ozone concentration, generation, and yield can be obtained 10208[ppm], 6.4[g/h], and 280[g/kwh] respectively.

  • It is known that ultrasound affects action potentials in neurons, but the underlying principles of ultrasonic neural stimulation are not clearly elucidated yet. In this study, we measured the action potentials of rat hippocampal neurons cultured on multi-electrode arrays during ultrasound stimulation. From most of electrodes, it was observed that the ultrasound stimulation increased the frequencies of action potentials (i.e., spikes) during ultrasound stimulation.

  • Electrical discharge machining(EDM) is an important process of machining the injection mold. This paper includes efficient design processes of electrodes for EDM. Based on the solid modeler, electrodes can be created by boolean and offset operations with core/cavity models. The built-in offset operations of the solid modeler may occur unexpected results due to the limitations of the solid modeler. We proposed the multi-step and moving-face offset processes in order to apply the EDM clearances. The proposed design processes are implemented with Unigraphics Vl5 API functions and C language and tested on Windows NT 4.0.

  • Underwater wet arc welds were experimentally performed on the KR-RA steel plate as base metal by using four different types of flux coated electrodes: KT33, UWEE, UWCS, and TN20, UWEE, the individually designed flux coated underwater electrode, had good operability when compared with other domestic terrestrial electrodes, and imported goods. The hardness value and the portion of martensite of HAZ were increased, by using a rapid cooling rate, Mechanical properties were also examined experimentally with a multi-pass butt-welding specimen test. The individually designed flux coated electrode UWEE could be used in practice for underwater wet welds.

Increasing the performance of energy harvesting in vibration mode shapes

  • This paper presents a method of design for the energy harvesting of a piezoelectric cantilever beam. Vibration modes have strain nodes where the strain distribution changes in the direction of the beam length. Covering the strain nodes of the vibration modes with continuous electrodes effects a cancellation of the voltages outputs. The use of segmented electrodes avoids cancellations of the voltage for multi-mode vibration. The resistive load affects the voltage and generated power. The optimum resistive load is considered for segmented and continuous electrodes, and then the power output is verified. One of the effective parameters on energy harvesting performance is the existence of concentrated mass. This topic is studied in this paper. Resonance and off-resonance cases are considered for the harvester. In this paper, both theoretical and experimental methods are used for satisfactory results.
