  • We have studied cell gap-dependent electrode-optic characteristics of the FFS mode using the LC with negative dielectric anisotropy. In case of a small cell gap of 2 ${\mu}m$, the transmittance at the center of pixel and common electrodes is low due to stronger influence of surface anchoring that holds the LC to the initial state than twisting force induced by neighboring LCs. In case of a large cell gap of 4 ${\mu}m$, the influence of surface anchoring force becomes weak so that the LCs at the center of pixel and common electrode can be twisted enough by applied voltage, giving rise to high transmittance. Therefore, we conclude that the light efficiency in the device is dependent on the cell gap.

  • Trichoderma harzianum is an aggressive causal agent of green mold disease on mushroom cultivation. Some bacterial strains isolated, from oyster mushroom compost in Wonju, were found to have in vitro antifungal activity against Trichoderma harzianum ATCC 6385, 6504, and our isolates Trichoderma spp. Y and G. Further in vitro antifungal studies on several strains of phytopathogenic fungi showed that all of 12 phytopathogenic fungal strains were significantly inhibited by the isolated antifungal bacteria in Petri dishes. Of these, KATB 99121 showed the broadest inhibiting effect and displayed as negative coagulase, negative sulfide production and rod shape. KATB 99121 was resistant to ampicillin, chlorampenicol, and kanamycin. Identification of isolates was determined by Biolog GN system, and KATB 99121 was identified as Photobacterium logei because of 96 probability, 0.65 similarity, and 4.97 disturbance. With electron microscopy, thin section of KATB 99121 strain revealed typical rod-like shaped cell (0.6-0.8${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$\times$1.5-2.0${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) with prokaryotic structure and organization.

  • Eviction characteristics of two typical friction materials (non-asbestos organic and low-steel friction materials) for an automotive brake system were investigated using an inertial brake dynamometer. In particular, the effect of sliding speed on friction coefficient was carefully investigated employing various test modes. The two friction materials were developed for commercial applications and were different mainly in the type and the amount of metallic ingredients in the friction material. The dynamometer test showed that the low-steel friction material was sensitive to the sliding speed exhibiting a negative $\mu$-v relation. On the other hand, the non-asbestos organic friction material was less sensitive to the sliding speed. The low steel friction materials with a negative $\mu$-v relation also induced larger vibration amplitude during brake applications.

  • Impulse breakdown voltage characteristics of sulphur-hexafluoride/nitrogen ($SF_{6}-N_{2}$) mixtures were presented. The applied voltages were the positive and negative lightning impulse (1.2/44${\mu}s$) and oscillating impulse ($0.4{\mu}s$/2.08MHz) voltages. The predischarge current was observed to clarify the breakdown mechanism. The electrode system was consisted of plane to plane configuration with a needle-shaped protrusion whose length and diameter are 10mm and 1mm. The measurements were carried out at the gas pressure of mixtures up to 0.5MPa with nitrogen concentrations varying from 5 to 20%. The electrical breakdown in $SF_{6}-N_{2}$ mixtures develops with steplike pulses in leader mechanism. The minimum breakdown voltages for the negative lightning and oscillating impulse voltages were higher than those for the positive.

  • Eighteen kinds of medicinal edible herbs, which are nontoxic and has been widely used in traditional folk medicine, were extracted and antimicrobial activity of the extracts was investigated against various foodborne pathogens or food poisoning microorganisms. Among them, the ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica showed the strongest antimicrobial activities against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria and followed by Quercus aliena and Quercus dentata, respectively. Thus, further study was conducted to determine the antimicrobial activity of Quercus species extracts. The plants were extracted with ethanol, methanol and water, respectively. The ethanol, methanol, and water extracts of Quercus mongolica leaf showed 10~21 mm inhibition zone against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria at two thousand $\mu\textrm{g}$ per disc, but little antimicrobial activity was observed against fungi and yeast. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf was 250$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL against Bacillus cereus. Salmonella typhimurium, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 62.5~125 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL against Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes, respectively.

  • The aim of the present study was to investigate the various chemical components present in the cone volatile oil of Cupressus macrocarpa and also determine its antimicrobial activity. Totally 13 compounds were identified with 99.99% by GC-MS analysis. The major compounds identified were terpinene-4-ol (19.42%), dinopol (15.63%), ${\alpha}$-pinene (13.58%), and ${\beta}$-pinene (12.16%). The antimicrobial activity was carried out for the oil and a 2% cream formulation using cup plate method by measuring the zone of inhibition. The gram positive organisms used were Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus megaterium, and Bacillus cogulans. The gram negative organisms used were Escherichia coli, Kleibseilla pneumonia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhi. In vitro antifungal studies were also carried out by using organisms, Candida albicans, Aspergillus flavus, Trichoderma lignorum and Cryptococcus neoformans. The standard drugs used were penicillin ($100{\mu}g/mL$), gentamycin ($100{\mu}g/mL$) and griseofulvin ($100{\mu}g/mL$) for gram positive bacteria, gram negative bacteria and fungi respectively. Both oil and cream formulation showed good activity against fungi than bacteria. This study is being reported for the first time on cone volatile oil of this plant.

  • The nar promoter of Escherichia coli was known to induce maximally under anaerobic or microaerobic conditions in the presence of nitrate. In this study, the nar promoter was tested to see whether the expression level of a reporter gene which fused lacZ gene at nar promoter's downstream, in the some gram negative host strains(Agrobacterium, Pseudomonas and Rhizobium). A nar promoter system(Combination of nar promoter and gram negative strain) was grown under aerobic conditions to absorbance at 600 nm of nearly 2.0 and then, the nar promoter was induced by lowering DO to 1-2% with alternating microaerobic and aerobic condition in the fermentor cultures, using different gram negative hosts. For a wild type nar promoter (pNW61), it was possible to maintain production of ${\beta}-galactosidase$ activity per cell(specific ${\beta}-galactosidase$ activity) at 14,000, 9600, 45 Miller units in the presence of 1% nitrate. and for a nitrate - independent nar promoter (pNW618) at 12,000, 10,400 and 58 Miller units in the absence of nitrate ion, respectively.

  • We have investigated the variation of spherical aberration of the anterior and posterior surface in a Korean sample population with various age between 20 to 71 years old. We used Pentacam (Oculus Inc., Germany) to measure the corneal radius, asphericity, and spherical aberration of 290 patients with normal cornea. There were negative correlation between corneal anterior radius and spherical aberration(r = -0.22, p<0.0001), and, there were negative correlation between corneal posterior radius and spherical aberration(r=-0.27, p < 0.0001). There were positive correlation between anterior asphericity and spherical aberration(r = 0.24, p < 0.0001), however there were negative correlation between posterior asphericity and spherical aberration(r = -0.17, p=0.00288).The average of anterior spherical aberration and posterior spherical aberration was $0.482{\pm}0.099{\mu}m$ and $-0.098{\pm}0.029{\mu}m$. The average of spherical aberration was $0.385{\pm}0.097{\mu}m$. There were significant positive correlations between anterior spherical aberration and age(r = 0.227, p<0.0001), and there were positive correlations between posterior aberration and age(r = 0.349, p<0.0001). It is considered that this data can be used as basic information for furture studies for improving the quality of vision of modern human and, through the analysis of the spherical aberration of cornea was to provide a better understanding of the optical part of the Korean's eye.

  • In this paper, a 64b small-area MTP memory IP is designed. A VPPL (=VPP/3) regulator and a VNN (=VNN/3) charge pump are removed since the inhibit voltages of an MTP memory cell are all 0V instead of the conventional voltages of VPP/3 and VNN/3. Also, a VPP charge pump is removed since the VPP program voltage is supplied from an external pad. Furthermore, a VNN charge pump is designed to provide its voltage of -VPP as a one-stage negative charge pump using the VPP voltage. The layout size of the designed 64b MTP memory IP with MagnaChip's $0.18{\mu}m$ BCD process is $377.585{\mu}m{\times}328.265{\mu}m$ (=0.124mm2). Its DC-DC converter related layout size is 76.4 percent smaller than its conventional counterpart.

  • The antibacterial effect of fish diet soaked in the extract of Salvia miltiorriza was tested to determine its levels of antibacterial activity, minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). The extract showed strong activity against gram positive bacteria, but was weak against gram negative bacteria. Concentration levels of 13.4~40.3 and 67.2~403.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml were determined as the MIC and MBC, respectively. However, levels above 403.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml was neither bacteriostatic nor bactericidal against Edwardsiella tarta, a gram negative strain. The fish diet, soaked in the extract of Salvia miltiorriza, inhibited the growth of all strains of Streptococcus genus and Vibrio anguillarum. The relationship formula between weight of fish diet and Salvia miltiorriza extract absorbed into the fish diet was Y=2.4953X+3.3276 ($R^2$= 0.9999). The antibacterial activity of the fish diet, soaked in the extract, was stable from 10 to 35$^{\circ}C$ during the storage period of 28 days.
