Applicability Analysis of Chemical Fate Model Considering Climate Change Impact in Municipal and Industrial Areas in Korea (기후변화를 고려한 화학물질거동모형의 도시·산단지역 적용성 연구)

  • As the temperature has changed by climate change, changes in its own characteristic values of the chemical substance or the movement and distribution of chemicals take place in accordance with the changes of hydrological and meteorological phenomena. Depending on the impact of climate change on the chemical behavior, it is necessary to understand and predict quantitative changes in the dynamics of the environment of pollutants due to climate change in order to predict in advance the occurrence of environmental disasters, and minimize the impact on the life and the environment after the incident. In this study, we have analysed and compared chemical fate models validated by previous studies in terms of model configuration, application size and input/output factors. The potential models applicable to municipal and industrial areas were selected on the basis of characteristic of each model, availability of input parameters and consideration for climate change, identified the problems, and then presented an approach to improve applicability.

A Study on the Appearance Design and Behavior of a Humanoid Robot to Receive Donations Effectively (효과적으로 기부를 받기 위한 인간형 로봇의 외형 디자인 및 행동에 관한 연구)

  • Robot ALICE@ERICA is a service robot developed to receive donations and to provide information services. ALICE@ERICA stands for Artificial Learning Intelligence robot for Culture and Entertainment at ERICA. In order to achieve the specific purpose of receiving donations, proper appearance design, appropriate movement and good communication skills are required in terms of HRI. In this paper, we introduce three strategies for developing robots to receive donations effectively. The first is to design a robot that makes people feel intimacy, the second is to approach only one of several people as a donor, and finally the donor communicates with video contents and voice recognition. A survey was conducted on the person who showed the reaction after the robot donated money in public places. Based on the survey results, it is proved that the method presented in this study effectively contributed to fund raising. If robots can perform actions that require high level of HRI, such as donation, robots can contribute more to human society. We hope that this study contributes to the improvement of human happiness.

A numerical analysis of the equivalent skeleton void ratio for silty sand

  • Recent research on the behavior of silty sand tends to advocate the use of equivalent skeleton void ratio to characterize the density state of this type of soil. This paper presents an investigation to explore the physical meaning of the equivalent skeleton void ratio by means of DEM simulations for assemblies of coarse and fine particles under biaxial shear. The simulations reveal that the distribution pattern of fine particles in the soil skeleton plays a crucial role in the overall macroscopic response: The contractive response observed at the macro scale is mainly caused by the movement of fine particles out of the force chains whereas the dilative response is mainly associated with the migration of fine particles into the force chains. In an assembly of coarse and fine particles, neither all of the fine particles nor all of the coarse ones participate in the force chains to carry the external loads, and therefore a more reasonable definition for equivalent skeleton void ratio is put forward in which a new parameter d is introduced to take into account the fraction of coarse particles absent from the force chains.

Effects of LED on Emotion-Like Feedback of a Single-Eyed Spherical Robot

  • Non-verbal communication is important in human interaction. It provides a layer of information that complements the message being transmitted. This type of information is not limited to human speakers. In human-robot communication, increasing the animacy of the robotic agent-by using non-verbal cues-can aid the expression of abstract concepts such as emotions. Considering the physical limitations of artificial agents, robots can use light and movement to express equivalent emotional feedback. This study analyzes the effects of LED and motion animation of a spherical robot on the emotion being expressed by the robot. A within-subjects experiment was conducted at the University of Tsukuba where participants were asked to rate 28 video samples of a robot interacting with a person. The robot displayed different motions with and without light animations. The results indicated that adding LED animations changes the emotional impression of the robot for valence, arousal, and dominance dimensions. Furthermore, people associated various situations according to the robot's behavior. These stimuli can be used to modulate the intensity of the emotion being expressed and enhance the interaction experience. This paper facilitates the possibility of designing more affective robots in the future, using simple feedback.

  • In-depth knowledge of electrode processes is crucial for determining the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In particular, the conduction mechanisms of charged species in the electrodes, such as lithium ions (Li+) and electrons, are directly correlated with the performance of the battery because the overall reaction is dependent on the charge transport behavior in the electrodes. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the different electrochemical processes occurring in electrodes in order to elucidate the charge conduction phenomenon. Thus, it is essential to conduct fundamental studies on electrochemical processes to resolve the technical challenges and issues arising during the ionic and electronic conduction. Furthermore, it is also necessary to understand the transport of charged species as well as the predominant factors affecting their transport in electrodes. Based on such in-depth studies, potential approaches can be introduced to enhance the mobility of charged entities, thereby achieving superior battery performances. A clear understanding of the conduction mechanism inside electrodes can help overcome challenges associated with the rapid movement of charged species and provide a practical guideline for the development of advanced materials suitable for high-performance LIBs.

An In-depth Study on Applying Metric Weighting to Space Syntax (공간구문론에의 거리가중개념 적용에 관한 심층 연구)

  • Applying metric(distance) factor as weighting to spatial syntax is known to not contribute to the explanatory power for the human movement behavior as compared to the geometric(angle) factor according to the negative results of several related studies. However, Kim & Piao (2017) assumed that there is not a problem of the metric factor itself but a problem of the way of applying the metric factor as weighting, and presented a new possibility of the metric factor as weighting by proposing and verifying the methods of applying the metric weighting, which are different from the existing ones. The purpose of this study is to propose advanced methods of applying the metric weighting to space syntax, and to verify whether they contribute to the improvement of explanatory power of space syntax analysis. In this paper, we propose functions for combined depth of distance-step that combine the distance-weighted depth function with the step depth function and apply them to axial segment analysis to check the improvement of explanatory power of them.

Discrete Element Method for Defining the Dynamic Behavior and Abrasion of Gravel in Mixer Trucks during Mixing and Discharging (이산 요소법을 이용한 골재 입자의 혼합 및 배출 시 골재 거동 및 강판 마모에 관한 연구)

  • Ready-mixed concrete is unconsolidated concrete typically transported to construction sites by using mixer trucks. A proper rotation of concrete is necessary to prevent its solidification in mixer trucks during transport: in accordance with the manufacturing method and quality inspection prescribed in KSF4009, this movement is maintained after the manufacturing of concrete in professional production plants and the addition of water, solid materials, and admixtures. Unfortunately, mixer truck parts wear out over long periods of time. In order to improve the wear resistance of the main part of mixer trucks, we used a steel plate with good wear resistance or partially added a reinforcement plate. In this study, we first tested the properties of concrete (as required for the DEM), and then carried out mixing and discharge simulations to define the actual operating conditions of mixer trucks. For each condition, we calculated the amount and location of wear. The reliability of our results was finally verified by comparing them with the measurement values. Overall, this study provided basic data for an optimal design of mixer trucks: one that would reduce the vehicles' weight and production costs.

Studies on the Mobility of Groundwater in Soil Environment by Capillary Rise Observation (모세관 현상에 의한 토양 환경에서의 지하수 거동에 관한 연구)

  • The mobility of groundwater in the soil environment has an important role in the soil environment and absorption of plant. Therefore, studies on the mobility of groundwater considering the physical and chemical properties of soil is very important. In this study, movement of water due to change in soil particle size were observed by capillary rise. The height of the capillaries was measured according to capillary diameter, temperature and solution concentration. The inner diameter of each capillary itself is 0.012, 0.016, 0.024, 0.027 cm, and experiments were performed at $22^{\circ}C$. As a result, the height of the capillaries decreased with increasing capillary diameter, and the solution temperature but increased with increasing concentration. Changes in the height of the capillaries are interpreted to related with surface tension by the Young-Laplace equation. Also on the mobility of groundwater, the increase of water and soil temperatures can be significant factors caused by ion strength and global warming as well as pores in the soil particles. The results of this study is considered to provide the basic data on the behavior of groundwater in the soil environment.

  • Deep reinforcement learning is an artificial intelligence algorithm that enables learners to select optimal behavior based on raw and, high-dimensional input data. A lot of research using this is being conducted to create an optimal movement path of a mobile robot in an environment in which obstacles exist. In this paper, we selected the Dueling Double DQN (D3QN) algorithm that uses the prioritized experience replay to create the moving path of mobile robot from the image of the complex surrounding environment. The virtual environment is implemented using Webots, a robot simulator, and through simulation, it is confirmed that the mobile robot grasped the position of the obstacle in real time and avoided it to reach the destination.

A Study on the Analysis of the Spatial Composition of Rehabilitation Department in Regional Public Hospital (지방의료원 재활의학부의 공간구성 분석 연구)

  • Purpose: To presenting basic data for the spatial composition required when planning the future department of rehabilitation medicine by analyzing the spatial composition of the location, size, area, and plan type of the rehabilitation department of the Regional Public Hospital. Methods: 3 Methods have been used in this paper. 1) Analyzing drawings to derive the net floor area of each room. 2) A literature survey about rehabilitation healthcare system. 3) Observation survey for user circulation analysis. Results: 1) Rehabilitation is an overall process of treatment that helps to play a role as an individual in society, away from the perspective of treating physical damage. The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of the local medical center must provide rehabilitation medical services corresponding to the recovery and maintenance period for community rehabilitation. 2) The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine can be classified into diagnostics area, examination area, treatment area, management area, and interface area based on the rehabilitation treatment process. Implication: It can be used as basic data when planning related facilities by analyzing the characteristics of the space plan of the required room according to the relationship between activities, movement lines, and operation plans based on user behavior.
