Water carrying iron (iii) oxide (Fe3O4) ferrofluid flow and heat transfer due to deceleration of a rotating plate

  • This research effort examines the flow behavior and heat transfer assessment of water carrying iron (iii) oxide magnetic fluid due to a rotating and moving plane lamina under the influence of magnetic dipole. The effect of rotational viscosity and magnetic body force is taken into consideration in the present study. The involvement of the moving disk makes a significant contribution to the velocity distribution and heat transfer in rotational flow. Vertical movement of the disk keeps the flow unsteady and the similarity transformation converts the governing equation of unsteady flow into nonlinear coupled differential equations. The non-dimensional equation in the present system is solved through the finite element procedure. Optimizing the use of physical parameters described in this flow, such results can be useful in the rotating machinery industries for heat transfer enhancement.

  • Many CCTVs are installed around the area for the purpose of preventing crime. In this case, it is necessary to sound an alarm when a specific situation occurs because many people cannot be watching CCTV. It is necessary to analyze the video data to determine what kind of behavior it is. In this study, we propose a scene change detection technique through histogram operation, paying attention to the change of the histogram due to a sudden movement.

  • In order to minimize casualties in case of a fire in a building, it is necessary to anticipate the time required for evacuation of occupants and the delay in evacuation in advance, and prepare countermeasures for possible occurrences. In fact, various factors that cannot be predicted exist and cannot be considered by excluding them, so the risk is predicted and evaluated through quantitative evacuation modeling. In order to understand this, we analyzed domestic and international evacuation modeling research trends. For about 40 years, starting with the characteristics of human movement, an evacuation modeling technique based on scientific methods has been developed through actual fire accident cases and various real-world experiments with humans. Then, in order to analyze the natural reaction of humans, which has a decisive influence in the recognition and decision-making phase, evacuation modelling studies have been conducted in depth using psychological and physical experimental methods.

Asymmetric Terrorist Alliances: Strategic Choices of Militant Groups in Southeast Asia

  • Why do some local rebel groups choose to form asymmetric alliances with large transnational terrorist organizations? This paper examines asymmetric terrorist alliance patterns by studying the international ties of domestic insurgencies in Southeast Asia. It uses data from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand to construct a theory defining the determinants of the choice of alliance strategies by terrorist groups. The findings conclude that rebels with limited aims prefer to act alone out of fear of entrapment. They are cautious of becoming associated with the struggle of transnational radical groups and provoking organized response from international and regional counterterrorism authorities. Local groups are more likely to seek alliance with an established movement when they have ambitious final objectives, challenging the core interests of the target state. In this case, the benefits of training and logistic support provided by an experienced organization outweigh the costs of becoming a target for coordinated counterterrorist campaign.

  • As the demand for mechatronic systems and high performance increases in the machinery industry, the importance of improving friction characteristics is emphasized. During relative movement of objects, friction and wear occur on two surfaces in contact, and various methods are being designed to increase the lifespan and energy efficiency of machines. The energy increase effect using lubricants is a well-known method. In this study, a micro-sized rectangular grid pattern was produced by applying a precise micro-pattern photo lithography process. Rectangular grid patterns of the same shape and friction behavior according to the size of the pattern were produced in convex and concave shapes, and the tribological characteristics of each were analyzed.

  • Periodic limb movements during sleep (PLMS) are prevalent in various sleep disorders, such as restless legs syndrome (RLS), periodic limb movements disorder, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), and narcolepsy. PLMS has been hypothesized to be related to the decline of dopaminergic transmission. In RLS, PLMS is suggested to be related to iron deficiency and symptom severity. PLMD is a rare sleep disorder, and the role of PLMS in PLMD has not been clearly investigated yet. PLMS in OSA, which remain after proper PAP therapy, may need further management. The clinical relevance of PLMS in RBD and narcolepsy have not been investigated thoroughly and need further studies. Whether PLMS are to be considered as a mere symptom of individual sleep disorders or not can be elucidated through studies investigating the efficacy of therapeutic approaches to reduce PLMS in various sleep disorders.

  • This study investigated the outpatient departments of Infectious Disease Hospitals by Region, which play an important role in establishing regional medical networking, to find a spatial structure that can provide a safe environment for efficient diagnosis and treatment, as well as a rational medical procedure in case of crisis. Department layout and adjacencies were derived by considering the access procedures according to patient classification, medical procedures by department, and connectivity with other departments. Based on the results derived by setting up zones according to infection control, activities, and objects, and analyzing the division of zones, the composition of areas by activities, movement flows by objects and treatment units, it can be used as basic data for the architectural plan of the Infectious Disease Hospital. Also, there are implications that can be used as basic data for planning related facilities by analyzing spatial relationships according to user behavior.

Sustainable Anti-Consumption of Household Products: A Nepalese Context

  • Sustainable consumption is the consumer's preference for the products that are environmentally friendly however, non-consumption also plays a major role in sustainability. A counter movement of anti-consumption runs from the beginning of mass-consumption of societies. Consumers can choose not to consume products/brands that can cause a harm to the environment or are incompatible with their ideology on conservation. The underlying notion of these non-consumption practices or anti-consumption is that the consumer is concerned about the effects that a purchasing choice has, not only on themselves but also on the external world. Anti-consumption is a resistance to, distaste of or even resentment of consumption. There is low adaptation rate of green consumption in terms of household products which shows that the non-green consumers reflect the mainstream population and indicates that consumers following anti-consumption is a niche segment reflecting the need of research in this area. So it is consequential to explore the available literatures regarding the subject matter and conduct a quantitative study. Following the notion this paper aims analyzing the factors influencing the anti-consumption behavior of household products in Nepalese context.

Effect of Intravenous Administration of Tramadol on the Minimum Alveolar Concentration of Isoflurane in Dogs (개에서 트라마돌의 정맥투여가 아이소플루란의 최소폐포농도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of tramadol hydrochloride on the minimum alveolar concentration of isoflurane ($MAC_{ISO}$) in dogs. Six healthy, female German shepherd dogs (aged 1-2 years) were used in this study. Anesthesia was induced by mask induction and maintained with isoflurane in oxygen. Mechanical ventilation maintained the end-tidal $CO_2$ partial pressure ($P_{ET}CO_2$) from 35 to 45 mmHg throughout the study. A baseline $MAC_{ISO}$ ($MAC_{ISO}B$) was determined starting 45 minutes after induction of anesthesia by clamping a pedal digit until gross purposeful movement was detected. After $MAC_{ISO}B$ determination, dogs received a tramadol loading dose of 3 mg/kg followed by a continuous rate infusion (CRI) of 2.6 mg/kg/h. The determination of $MAC_{ISO}$ after administration of tramadol ($MAC_{ISO}T$) began 20 min after the start of the CRI. Arterial blood pressure and heart rate were recorded continuously and arterial blood samples for blood gas analysis were collected at the end of the equilibration period. Mean ${\pm}$ SD values for the $MAC_{ISO}B$ and $MAC_{ISO}T$ were $1.33{\pm}0.04%$ and $1.23{\pm}0.04%$, respectively. The $MAC_{ISO}B$ decreased significantly by $7.5{\pm}0.2%$ (P < 0.05) after administration of tramadol. The mean heart rate and arterial blood pressure of six dogs were not changed significantly after tramadol administration. The blood gas levels remained constant during the study. In conclusion, tramadol could significantly reduce $MAC_{ISO}$ without depression of cardiorespiratory function. Thus, the use of tramadol on inhalation anesthesia with isoflurane in dogs can improve the stability of anesthesia and the quality of recovery.

Is Hiding Foot and Mouth Disease Sensitive Behavior for Farmers? A Survey Study in Sri Lanka

  • Foot and mouth disease (FMD) has a long history in Sri Lanka and was found to be endemic in various parts of the country and constitutes a constant threat to farmers. In Sri Lanka, currently there is no regular, nationwide vaccination programme devised to control FMD. Therefore, improving farmers' knowledge regarding distinguishing FMD from other diseases and ensuring prompt reporting of any suspicion of FMD as well as restricting movement of animals are critical activities for an effective FMD response effort. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between farmers' knowledge levels and their behaviors to establish a strategy to control FMD. In our study, item count technique was applied to estimate the number of farmers that under-report and sell FMD-infected animals, although to do so is prohibited by law. The following findings were observed: about 63% of farmers have very poor knowledge of routes of FMD transmission; 'under-reporting' was found to be a sensitive behavior and nearly 23% of the farmers were reluctant to report FMD-infected animals; and 'selling FMD-infected animals' is a sensitive behavior among high-level knowledge group while it is a non-sensitive behavior among the low-level knowledge group. If farmers would understand the importance of prompt reporting, they may report any suspected cases of FMD to veterinary officials. However, even if farmers report honestly, they do not want to cull FMD-infected animals. Thus, education programs should be conducted not only on FMD introduction and transmission, but also its impact. Furthermore, consumers may criticize the farmers for culling their infected animals. Hence, not only farmers, but also consumers need to be educated on the economic impact of FMD and the importance of controlling an outbreak. If farmers have a high knowledge of FMD transmission, they consider selling FMD-infected animals as a sensitive behavior. Therefore, severe punishment should be levied for selling FMD-infected animals.
