The TMS(Thermal Management System) heater in a fuel cell vehicle has been developed to prevent a decline of fuel cell durability and cold start durability. Main functions of the COD(Cathode Oxygen Depletion) heater are depletion of oxygen in a cathode as heat energy and consumption of electric power for rapid warming up of a fuel cell stack. This paper covers subjects including the design specification of a heater, heater controller for detection of overheat and reliability assessment including coolant pressure cycle test of a heater. To verify the design concept, burst pressure and deformation analysis of plastic housing were carried out. Also, temperature distribution analysis of heater surface and coolant inside of housing were carried out to verify the design concept. By designing the plastic housing instead of a steel housing, the 30% weight lightening and 50% cost reduction were attained. A module-based design of a TMS system including a heater or reducing the watt density of a heater is a problem to be solved in the near future work.
High-speed rotating machinery requires low cost and reliable bearing elements with low friction, stable rotordynamic characteristics, and a simple design. This study experimentally evaluates the effects of bearing-support elements on the vibrational characteristics of a small-sized, high-speed permanent magnetic motor. A series of coast down tests from 100 krpm characterize the vibrational behaviors, rotor displacement, and housing acceleration of motors supported by ball bearings, ball bearings with a metal mesh damper, and gas foil bearings, respectively. Two eddy-current sensors installed in the horizontal and vertical directions measure the displacement of the rotor at its front nut, and a 3-axis accelerometer attached to the motor housing measures the housing acceleration. The test results reveal that synchronous (1X) vibration components most significantly affect the rotor displacement and housing acceleration, independent of the bearing-support elements. The motor supported by the deep-groove ball bearings results in the largest rotor vibrations increasing with speed; this is due to the absence of a damping mechanism. Additionally, the metal mesh damper effectively reduces the rotor displacement, housing acceleration, and sound-pressure level in the high-speed region (i.e., above 40 krpm), thus implying its substantial damping performance when installed on the outer race of the ball bearing. Lastly, the gas foil bearing supported motor yields the smallest rotor displacement, housing acceleration, and lowest sound-pressure level because of its hydrodynamic airborne operation, which does not require rolling elements that may cause mechanical friction and vibrations.
Recently, high noise problem was experienced during the development of 2-pole squirrel cage motor for industrial compressor. In order to firstly identify the noise characteristics, a variety of measurements were carried out. It was found out that high noise was dominated by linear and nonlinear slot noise components. For the development of low noise indusrial motor, the air gap between rotor and stator in the motor was firstly enlarged. Secondly, it was also modified for the cooling housing to have high absorption features. Consequencely, low noise 2-pole motor having the noise level of less 80㏈(A) was developed. In this paper, a series of noise identification and control process for this motor are introduced.
Recently, a severe noise problem was encountered during a shop test of large scale vertical motor. In order to identify the noise characteristics and propose the countermeasure, a variety of experiments such as sound excitation test and contribution analysis was earned out in addition to ordinary noise and vibration measurements. The results showed that the severe noise level was dominated by an acoustic resonance phenonmenon in the cooler housing and higher sound power of outer fan. Through proper treatments, the noise level could be acceptable.
This paper presents the fabrication of inchworm motor for high precision actuator system of large displacement and high force. The inchworm motor consists of a extend actuator that provides displacement of tool guide and two clamping actuators which provide the holding force. In order to avoid the PZT fracture, design of pre-load housing was conducted by flexure hinge structure, because PZT actuator has low tensile and shear. To design the pre-load housing and optimize the clamping mechanism, the static and dynamic analysis were conducted by finite element method. From these results, a prototype of the inchworm motor was fabricated and dynamic characteristic with respect to the various frequency was tested. The maximum velocity of the inchworm motor was $41.1{\mu}m/s$ at 16Hz.
Combat vehicles require high levels of maneuverability, firepower, armor, and operability. A high-performance power system is required for optimal maneuverability. The fuel pump which supplies fuel stably is very important to achieve this. The fuel pump consists of a pump part, a motor part, and a control part. It is equipped with a BLDC motor. Numerous failures of the fuel pump occurred during vehicle operation when exposed to vibration, shock, and high temperature. The cause of failure was confirmed to be stator slip of the BLDC motor. Stator slip is a consequence of the interference loss between the stator and the housing of the motor part in an high temperature environment. The failure of the fuel pump was solved through size control of the motor housing and the stator. We performed vibration testing at high temperature for verification. This study contributes to improving the reliability of combat vehicles.
In this paper, a new type of inchworm motion actuator is developed in fabrication of actuators for micro-press machine. This is consisted of three piezoelectric actuators, one is for moving the tool guide and the other are for clamping the guide. The inchworm motor provides both high load and large displacement in small size actuator. PZT has compressive strength and often fails under tensile stress and pulling. Thus, in order to prevent failure, we have designed pre-load housing and accomplished FEM analysis. The pre-load housing was used for determining the optimal design condition by comparing the von-mises stresses with the change of hinge stiffness. Also, in order to predict the performance of the motor under certain conditions, the system model was simulated using MATLAB. This is open loop control actuator and driven by the period of input voltage.
The vane type air-motor hand-piece is used widely in the dental services. There are a lot of experimental studies about air-motor but eccentrically off not many numerical studies by using Computational Fluid Dynamics. An air-motor has rotor which rotates at the center of inner housing. The retractable vanes are installed on the rotor. As the rotor of the air-motor rotates, vanes move up and down straightly in the radial direction along the guide. Therefore we have to analyze the unsteady flow field by accurate time dependent marching technique. ANSYS 12.0 CFX is used to analyze unsteady vane-motor flow field Analysis of the changing control volume inside air-motor is implemented by user-defined functions and moving mesh options. Rotational speed of the rotor is approximately 23,000rpm.
