  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the morphologic characteristics of two types of stainless steel crowns (SSCs) for the first primary molar using a 3D scanner. Study design: Two types of SSCs, KIDS CROWN (KC) and 3M ESPE ND-96 (ND), for the first primary molars were scanned using a 3D scanner. The mesiodistal and buccolingual diameters at the height of the contour and the cervical margin, occlusocervical diameters on the mesial, distal, buccal, and lingual aspects were measured, and the crown shape ratio, the smooth surface crown height ratio, and the cervical convergence were calculated. Results: In the crown shape ratio of the mandibular SSC, KC was larger buccolingually compared with ND. In the smooth surface crown height ratio, ND was larger than KC in all of the maxilla and mesial, distal, and lingual aspects of the mandible. ND was more convergent to the cervical mesiodistally and buccolingually compared with KC. Conclusion: In the superimposed images of the maxillary SSC, the mesiolingual and distolingual line angles of KC were more prominent compared with ND. In the mandible, ND demonstrated higher cusps and more obvious buccal developmental lobes than KC. ND showed a larger cervical undercut than KC.

  • A case of Diphyllobothrium latum infection in a 49-year old man is described, and diphyllobothriasis latum in the Republic of Korea is briefly reviewed. An incomplete strobila of a tapeworm, 95 cm in length, without scolex and neck, was spontaneously discharged in the feces of a patient. On the basis of morphologic characteristics of the worm and eggs, the worm was identified as D. latum. The patient was successfully treated with a single dose (15 mg/kg) of praziquantel. The most probable source of infection was salmon flesh according to the past history of the patient. The first case of D. latum infection was documented in 1971, and this is the 43rd recorded case in the Republic of Korea. The 43 cases were briefly reviewed. The patients' main complaints were gastrointestinal troubles, such as mild abdominal pain, indigestion, and diarrhea, and discharge of tapeworm segments in the feces. The suspected infection sources included raw or improperly cooked flesh of fresh or brackish water fish, including the perch, mullet, salmon, and trout.

  • Two phenolic glucosides, eutigoside Band eutigoside C were isolated from the fresh leaves of Eurya emarginata. These two phenolic glucosides exerted a significant inhibitory effect on the growth of HL-60 promyelocytic leukemia cells. Furthermore, when the HL-60 cells were treated with eutigoside C, several apoptotic characteristics such as DNA fragmentation, morphologic changes, and increase of the population of sub-G1 hypodiploid cells were observed. In order to understand the mechanism of apoptosis induction by eutigoside C, we examined the changes of Bcl-2 and Bax expression levels. The eutigoside C reduced BcI-2 protein and mRNA levels, but slightly increased Bax protein and mRNA levels in a time-dependent manner. When we examined the activation of caspase-3, an effector of apoptosis, the eutigoside C increased the expression of active form (19-kDa) of caspase-3 and the increase of their activities was demonstrated by the cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase, a substrate of caspase-3, to 85-kDa. The results suggest that the inhibitory effect of eutigoside C from E. emarginata on the growth of HL-60 appears to arise from the induction of apoptosis via the down-regulation of BcI-2 and the activation of caspase.

  • Maritrema spp. (Digenea: Microphallidae) are parasites of birds, but have not been found in the Republic of Korea. In this study, metacercariae of Maritrema sp. were discovered in the Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, caught in the mud-flats of Jebu-do, Hwasung-gun, Gyeonggi-do, and the adult flukes were confirmed by experimental infection into mice. Based on the symmetric ribbon-like vitellarium, adult flukes of Maritrema sp. were identified, but did not belong to previously described species in terms of the following morphologic characteristics: ceca reaching to the lateral wall at the anterior border of the ovary; ventral sucker larger than oral sucker; a prominent metraterm; and vitellarium forming a complete ring. Hence, we named this microphallid M. jebuensis n. sp. after the island where the second intermediate hosts were collected. From this study, it has been shown that Maritrema sp. is distributed in Korea and transmitted by the Asian shore crab, H. sanguineus.

  • Hemal nodes and hemolymph nodes are lymphoid organs which share morphologic and functional characteristics of lymph nodes and spleens. Hemal nodes and hemolymph nodes are normally present in Korean native goats. Hemal nodes bad extensive subcapsular and deep sinuses distended by a great number of erythrocytes, and no typical cortex and medulla were observed. Blood vessels commonly occurred, but lymph vessel was not observed in the hemal node. Hemolymph nodes had distinct cortex and medulla, and also had afferent and efferent lymph vessels. The aim of the present study was to obtain new information on the distinct morphological structures of hemal nodes and hemolymph nodes according to ages, and have the basic data for their functions. Goats are divided into 5 groups, consisting of 3 animals aged 1, 3, 6, 10, and 12 months. The morphological studies of the organs were carried out by gross anatomy, light microscopy and immunohistochemistry. During aging, there was an increase in the size of the organs, while there were no significant changes of their numbers, locations and colors. As the goat got older, the lymphatic nodules of hemal nodes were more developed, and the number of macrophage containing phagocytosed erythrocytes was more increased. As the goat was younger, the lymphatic tissues of hemolymph nodes were less developed. There was no difference in distribution of T- and B- lymphocytes according to ages.

The aim of the present study was to obtain new informations on the distinct morphological structures of hemal nodes and hemolymph nodes according to ages, and to get the basic data for their functions in Korean native goats. Goats were divided into 5 groups, consisting of 3 animals aged 1, 3, 6, 10 and 12 months, respectively. Ultrastructural features of the organs were observed by transmission and scanning electron microscopes. The sinuses of hemal nodes and hemolymph nodes were lined by endothelial-like reticular cells which had euchromatin-rich nuclei and many cytoplasmic processes, surrounding collagen fibrils. Macrophages containing phagocytosed erythrocytes were often noted in the diffuse lymphatic tissues of hemal nodes and hemolymph nodes. Some mast cells were in contact with the plasma cells near the blood vessel. Hemal nodes and hemolymph nodes had venous sinusal-like vessels which were different from the deep sinus. The lymph vessels with valves were observed in the capsule of the hemolymph node. There were no ultrastructural differences of the organs in the age different groups of the animals. These results suggest that hemal nodes and hemolymph nodes may take part in hemopoiesis, blood filtration and immune reaction in Korean native goats.

  • Histiocytosis-X is a tenn used to define three diseases with similar morphologic characteristics : Letterer-Siwe diseae, Hand-Schuller-Christian disease and Eosinophilic granuloma. In general, they differ in terms of their age of onset, severity of clinical course and site of involvement. Eosinophilic granuloma typically is seen in young adults. Eosinophilic granuloma is diagnosed in the presense of diffuse pulmonary infiltrate, bony involvement. However, the pulmonary radiologic findings of eosinophilic granuloma are variable accordinary to stage of disease. therefore pathologic diagnosis of involving site is essential for confirmative diagnosis of eosinophilic grananuloma. Pathologically. the three disease are characterized by granulomatous infiltration of alveolar septa and bronchial walls and often involvement of bone. The hallmark of this disease is proliferation of the Langerhans' cell. The identifying feature is the X-body or Birbeck granule that is present in Langerhans' cells and histiocytic cells found in the lung of EG patient. We report a case of bilatera1, recurrent and spontaneous pneumothoraces in a 21 year old man with pulmonary histiocytosis-X, which is confirmed by eosinophilc granuloma in bone marrow biopsy and ultrastructural examination in cells obtained from BAL.

  • The patient with an anterior open bite has one of the most difficult orthodontic problem to correct. Previous studies have yielded different conclusions as to exactly where the morphologic problems associated with vertical dysplasia-high angle cases are located. In order to identify the cephalometric features of high angle cases and highlight the measurements that characterize high angle cases, 109 pretreatment cephalograms, 35 high angle, 37 average angle, and 37 low angle cases, were analyzed and compared statistically. As the mandibular plane was steeper, the anterior facial height, especially lower anterior facial height, became greater, and the posterior facial height became smaller. All the dentoalveolar vertical dimensions, especially in upper, increased. And all the skeletal angular measurements increased. Especially Lower genial angle had most positive correlation to mandibular Plane angle. Upper incisor was lingually inclined, and lower incisor was labially inclined in high angle cases.

  • In the field Of individual identification in forensic Science, if the body is charred, it is sometimes impossible to identify the morphologic changes and charred tissue such as blood, muscle and bone can not be identified by forensic microbiologic method such as DNA typing. So the author used the characteristics of teeth which is relatively firm compare to other organs and stable to external environment such as heat and also possess cells needed for the DNA typing. The author conducted the experiment on teeth to detect DNA related to individual identification regarding to temperature in which other charredorgans can not be detected. The experiment was done on 64 extracted third molars consisted of unheated ones, and heated teeth to $100^{\circ}C$, $150^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$ for 45 min, 90 min, and 120 min respectively and to $250^{\circ}C$ for 45 min. DNA was extracted from each tooth and amplified fragment length polymorphism procedure(AMP-FLPs) using polymerase chain reaction(PCR) was applied and observed for the matching DNA in HumTH01 and HumCD4 locus and the followings Are the results : 1. It was able to detect matching DNA in HumTH01 and HumCD4 locus in every teeth which no heating has been done. 2. It was able to detect matching DNA in HumTH01 and HumCD4 locus in every teeth heated to $100^{\circ}C$ for 45, 90 and 120 min. 3. It was able to detect matching DNA in HumTH01 and HumCD4 locus in teeth heated to $l00^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$ for 45, 90, 120 min. 4. It was impossible to detect matching DNA in HumTH01 and HumCD4 locus in teeth heated to $250^{\circ}C$. So, it is possible to extract DNA from teeth that otherwise can not be extracted from other organs in the charred body and it can be concluded that teeth are highly reliable and applicatable as forensic odontology for individual identification.

  • In this study, the development processes of multiple bars in the channels with erodible banks were investigated by double Fourier analysis. The initially straight channels in the experiment flume were widened with eroding the side banks, and the multiple bars were generated and grew due to stalling of the sediment on the bed. The bars migrated downstream and the size of the bars increased with time. The flow was separated around the bars, and the bed and banks near the bars were scoured due to the impinged secondary flow. The morphologic changes were accelerated by the bank erosion, which affected the fluctuations of sediment discharge downstream. The double Fourier analysis of the bed waves showed that 1-1 mode (alternate bar) was dominant at the initial stage of the channel development. As time increased, 2-3 mode (central or multiple bars) was dominant due to the increased width to depth ratio. Moreover, the number of bars in a cross section of the channel were increased due to the non linearity of alternate bars. The width to depth ratio was increased by the bank erosion, which affected the bar migration and the bar wavelength. However, the dimensionless tractive force was decreased by it.
