  • When Coming alongside the shallow water or narrow pier, they apply sea area with small mooring facilities and Floating matter because of the diversity of ships and limitation and effective in cutting expenses. However, when ships, applying Small mooring facilities and Floating matter, come alongside, there can be some impulse by waves between the Floating things and ships which possibly leads to mass disaster. Therefore, there should be forecasts and analysis of the movement caused by waves. On this Study, it introduces the composition and principles of the developed system provides the base of the movement traits through measuring 3-D exercise data and acceleration of the Mooring and Floating matters.

  • Reliable prediction of the motion of FOWT (floating offshore wind turbine) and associated mooring line tension is important in both design and operation/monitoring processes. In the present study, a 5MW OC4 semisubmersible wind turbine is numerically modeled, simulated, and analyzed by the open-source numerical tool, OpenFAST and in-house numerical tool, Charm3D-FAST. Another commercial-level program FASTv8-OrcaFlex is also introduced for comparison for selected cases. The three simulation programs solve the same turbine-floater-mooring coupled dynamics in time domain while there exist minor differences in the details of the program. Both the motions and mooring-line tensions are calculated and compared with the DeepCWind 1/50 scale model-testing results. The system identification between the numerical and physical models is checked through the static-offset test and free-decay test. Then the system motions and mooring tensions are systematically compared among the simulated results and measured values. Reasonably good agreements between the simulation and measurement are demonstrated for (i) white-noise random waves, (ii) typical random waves, and (iii) typical random waves with steady wind. Based on the comparison between numerical results and experimental data, the relative importance and role of the differences in the numerical methodologies of those three programs can be observed and interpreted. These comparative-study results may provide a certain confidence level and some insight of potential variability in motion and tension predictions for future FOWT designs and applications.

  • This study documents KORDI's experience of successfully deploying a deep ocean buoy for monitoring oceanic and atmospheric variabilities in the tropical western Pacific Ocea nsince May 2010. The primary focus of this study was to compare TRITON (big and old type) with m-TRITON (smaller and new type) buoys within the JAMSTEC's buoy management system. The objective of operating a KORDI buoy is to ascertain oceanic variability in the tropical western Pacific. We adopted a slack-line mooring type to observe water temperatures at six layers from surface to 400 m depth. However, we could not acquire satisfactory results due to lack of expertise in buoy management system. A new KORDI buoy has been developing, which has been modified from both buoys, and ARGOS-3 satellite system and a slack-type mooring line.

  • In order to evaluate the safety of navigation at sea and the safety of mooring on berthing, it is necessary that the wave and wind induced ship dynamic motion should be measured in real time domain for the validity of theoretical evaluation method such as sea-keeping performance and safety of mooring. In this paper, the basic design of sensors is discussed and some system configurations were shown. The developed system mainly consists of 4 kinds of sensors such as three-dimensional accelerator, two-dimensional tilt sensor, azimuth sensor and two displacement sensors. Using this measuring system, it can be obtained the 6 degrees of freedom of ship dynamic motions at sea and on berthing such as rolling, pitching, yawing, swaying, heaving, surging under the certain external forces.

  • This study shows that the vertical migration speed of sound scattering layers (SSLs), which is distributed in near Funka Bay, were measured by 3D velocity components acquired from a bottom moorng ADCP. While the bottom mooring type has a problem to measure the velocity vectors of sound scattering layer distributed near to surface, both the continuous vertical migration patterns and variability of backscatterers were routinely investigated as well. In addition, the velocity vectors were compared with the vertical migration velocity estimated from echograms of Mean Volume Backscattering Strength, and estimated to produce observational bias due to SSLs which is composed of backscatterers such as euphausiids, nekton, and fishes have swimming ability.

  • Due to diversification of ships and limited space of pier, when ships come alongside the shallow water or narrow pier, sea area with small mooring facilities and floating matter is frequently applied. Through these, coming alongside the various space is capable and cost effectiveness is enhanced. However, when ships, applying small mooring facilities and floating matter, come alongside, there can be some impulse by waves between the floating things and ships which possibly leads to mass disaster. Therefore, there should be forecasts and analysis of the movement caused by waves. On this study, we develop measuring system for movement analysis of mooring and floating matters which provides base data with movement traits by measuring 3-D exercise information and acceleration at mokpo maritime university marina facility. Also, the composition and principles of the developed system is explained.

  • This paper reports the conceptual design process for a floating metocean data measurement system (FMDMS) for measuring wind information at sea. The FMDMS consists of three circular pontoons, columns, and a deck, which the LiDAR (lighting detection and ranging) is installed on. The dynamics of the mooring lines and motion responses of the FMDMS were analyzed using commercial codes such as WAMIT and OrcaFlex. One design criterion of the developed FMDMS was to maintain the motion responses as small as possible to enhance the LiDAR's accuracy. Starting with the preliminary design parameters such as the FMDMS's principal dimensions, weight, and important parameters of mooring system, we checked whether the FMDMS met the design requirements at each design stage, and then made modifications as necessary. The developed FMDMS showed a large pitch behavior for a small heave motion.

  • The laboratory inspection and analysis of several types of ropes such as edge tensile test, D/d tensile test and abrasion test were carried out in order to investigate the abrasion degradation by external damage and to obtain the fundamental data for measurement against the abrasion. PET ropes were socketed and evaluated under tensile testing. A yarn-on-yarn abrasion test machine has been developed to study the damage and failure associated with rubbing between fiber surfaces. The abrasion test method consists of sliding a length of interwrapped yarn against itself in a reciprocating fashion, either dry or immersed in liquid. It has also been adapted to measure yarn-on-yarn friction. The influence of spin finish on yarn friction and abrasion was investigated extensively. This study indicates that finish has a major effect not only on yarn performance but also on rope performance under the marine environment.
