  • Objectives: Despite the high discontinuation rate of clozapine in refractory schizophrenia, there is limited evidence regarding the suggested treatment after clozapine discontinuation. Methods: The medical records of 37 patients who discontinued clozapine were retrospectively reviewed. The prescription patterns of antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and antidepressants were compared at three points before and after clozapine treatment and at the most recent visit. Results: After clozapine discontinuation, 75.6% of the subjects were receiving antipsychotic polypharmacy, and 32.4% were taking more than 3 antipsychotics. The frequently used antipsychotics were olanzapine (21.5%), quetiapine (21.5%), and paliperidone (12.7%). The rates of augmentation with mood stabilizers and antidepressants were 43.2% and 29.7%, respectively. Furthermore, valproate was the most commonly used mood stabilizer (87.5%). Conclusion: Antipsychotic polypharmacy and augmentation are inevitable in schizophrenia patients for whom clozapine has been discontinued. Further research is required to improve the outcomes of polypharmacy and augmentation in schizophrenia patients.

  • Objectives : Recurrence of mood episodes associated with a specific season has been described in various mood disorders. Seasonal change in mood and behavior as a lifetime trait is also observed in healthy individuals. This study aimed at comparing the lifetime trait of seasonal variations of mood and behavior between bipolar disorder patients and controls as well as investigating associated factors of seasonality. Methods : Subjects were ninety-four clinically stable patients with bipolar disorder and 188 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Seasonality of mood and behavior was assessed retrospectively on lifetime basis using Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire(SPAQ). Results : The patient group showed a higher median global seasonality score(GSS) of SPAQ and a higher rate of seasonal affective disorder(SAD) compared to the control group(p < 0.0001). For subjects showing prominent seasonality, the seasonal symptom profile and seasonal pattern was similar in both patient and control groups. In addition to the diagnosis, female gender was shown to be a predictor of seasonality in the multiple linear regression analysis(p = 0.045). Conclusion : This study suggests that lifetime trait of seasonality may be related to the susceptibility of bipolar disorder.

  • In this paper, we propose a framework that automatically suggests emotion using emotion analysis method based on facial expression change. We use Microsoft's Emotion API to calculate and analyze emotion values in facial expressions to recognize emotions that change over time. In this step, we use standard deviations based on peak analysis to measure and classify emotional changes. The difference between the classified emotion and the normal emotion is calculated, and the difference is used to recognize the emotion abnormality. We match user's emotions to relatively relaxed emotions using histograms and emotional meshes. As a result, we provide relaxed emotions to users through images. The proposed framework helps users to recognize emotional changes easily and to train their emotions through emotional relaxation.

  • There are many factors that affect academic achievement, and the influences of those factors are also complex. Since the factors that influence mathematics academic achievement are constantly changing and developing, longitudinal studies to predict and analyze the growth of learners are needed. This study uses longitudinal data from 2014 (second year of middle school) to 2017 (second year of high school) of the Seoul Education Longitudibal Study, and divides it into groups with similar longitudinal patterns of change in mathematics academic achievement. The longitudinal change patterns and direct influence of mood and satisfaction were examined. As a result of the study, it was found that the mathematics academic achievement of the first group (1456 students, 68.3%) including the majority of students and the second group (677 students) of the top 31.7% had a direct influence on the mathematics class attitude. It was found that the mood and satisfaction of mathematics classes did not have a direct effect. In addition, the influence of mathematics class attitude on mathematics academic achievement was different according to the group. In addition, students in group 2 with high academic achievement in mathematics showed higher mathematics class attitude, mood, and satisfaction. In addition, the attitude, atmosphere, and satisfaction of mathematics classes were found to change continuously from the second year of middle school to the second year of high school, and the extent of the change was small.

  • Music evokes human emotions or creates music moods through various low-level musical features. Typical music clip consists of one or more moods and this can be used as an important criteria for determining the similarity between music clips. In this paper, we propose a new music retrieval scheme based on the mood change patterns of music clips. For this, we first divide music clips into segments based on low level musical features. Then, we apply K-means clustering algorithm for grouping them into clusters with similar features. By assigning a unique mood symbol for each cluster, we can represent each music clip by a sequence of mood symbols. Finally, to estimate the similarity of music clips, we measure the similarity of their musical mood sequence using the Longest Common Subsequence (LCS) algorithm. To evaluate the performance of our scheme, we carried out various experiments and measured the user evaluation. We report some of the results.

  • Obesity is one of the most serious health problems in developed countries. It negatively affects diverse aspects of human wellbeing. Of these, a relationship between obesity and depression is widely recognized but biomarkers for assessment of obesity-associated mood changes in animal obesity models are rarely known. Here we explored the link between obesity and the plasma levels of monoamine neurotransmitters involved in mood control using a sensitive UPLC/MSMS technique in high fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity model in male C57BL/6 mice to explore the potential utility of plasma tests for obesity-associated mood change. HFD (60% of total calories, 8 weeks) induced significantly higher weight gains in body (+37.8%) and fat tissue (+306%) in male C57BL/6 mice. Bioanalysis of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine in plasma at 8 weeks of HFD revealed that serotonin decreased significantly in the obese mice when compared to normal diet-fed mice ($2.7{\pm}0.6$ vs $4.3{\pm}2.0ng/ml$, N=8). Notably, a negative correlation was found between the levels of serotonin and body weight gains. Furthermore, principal component analysis (PCA) with the individual levels of neurotransmitters revealed that plasma levels of dopamine and serotonin could apparently differentiate the obese mice from lean ones. Our study demonstrated that blood plasma levels of neurotransmitters can be employed to evaluate the mood changes associated with obesity and more importantly, provided an important clue for understanding of the relationship between obesity and mood disorders.
