  • Let L(s, χ) be the Dirichlet L-series associated with an f-periodic complex function χ. Let P(X) ∈ ℂ[X]. We give an expression for ∑fn=1 χ(n)P(n) as a linear combination of the L(-n, χ)'s for 0 ≤ n < deg P(X). We deduce some consequences pertaining to the Chowla hypothesis implying that L(s, χ) > 0 for s > 0 for real Dirichlet characters χ. To date no extended numerical computation on this hypothesis is available. In fact by a result of R. C. Baker and H. L. Montgomery we know that it does not hold for almost all fundamental discriminants. Our present numerical computation shows that surprisingly it holds true for at least 65% of the real, even and primitive Dirichlet characters of conductors less than 106. We also show that a generalized Chowla hypothesis holds true for at least 72% of the real, even and primitive Dirichlet characters of conductors less than 106. Since checking this generalized Chowla's hypothesis is easy to program and relies only on exact computation with rational integers, we do think that it should be part of any numerical computation verifying that L(s, χ) > 0 for s > 0 for real Dirichlet characters χ. To date, this verification for real, even and primitive Dirichlet characters has been done only for conductors less than 2·105.

  • In this paper hardware implementation of GF($2^{191}$) elliptic curve cryptographic coprocessor which supports 7 operations such as scalar multiplication(kP), Menezes-Vanstone(MV) elliptic curve cipher/decipher algorithms, point addition(P+Q), point doubling(2P), finite-field multiplication/division is described. To meet structure resistant against simple power analysis, the ECC processor adopts the Montgomery scalar multiplication scheme which main loop operation consists of the key-independent operations. It has operational characteristics that arithmetic units, such GF_ALU, GF_MUL, and GF_DIV, which have 1, (m/8), and (m-1) fixed operation cycles in GF($2^m$), respectively, can be executed in parallel. The processor has about 68,000 gates and its simulated worst case delay time is about 7.8 ns under 0.35um CMOS technology. Because it has about 320 kbps cipher and 640 kbps rate and supports 7 finite-field operations, it can be efficiently applied to the various cryptographic and communication applications.

  • The use of global mobile technology has increased exponentially. In particular, a survey of consumers in the Philippines showed that 83% "could not live" without their mobile phones. We investigated factors, such as ease of use and personal innovativeness, to elucidate the consumer adoption of mobile technologies in the Philippines, to integrate existing adoption theories for academics and provide recommendations to practitioners based on our findings. Our research questions are as follows: (1) What key factors drive adoption of mobile technologies by Filipino consumers?; (2) Are Filipino consumers innovative in their use of mobile technologies?; And (3) How can telecom companies retain their customers? A structural equation model, which was built from a survey of 528 mobile Filipino consumers, showed support for repurchase intention to use mobile technologies. The hypotheses were generally supported by variables related to mobile phone usage with the Philippine consumer sample. Results support all of the hypothesized relationships for consumers using mobile technologies. Personal innovativeness did load on both attitude and repurchase intention for mobile applications as originally hypothesized but was strongly loaded for attitude toward using. This research is a first step in understanding the adoption of mobile applications by Filipino consumers. We initially hypothesized that consumer behavior toward mobile applications would involve constructs of innovativeness, ease of use, and satisfaction; however, we found that ease of use was less significant in understanding repurchase intention to use mobile technologies. Personal innovativeness was more important in explaining satisfaction with mobile application attitudes and repurchase intention. The Filipino context of this study also provides other interesting implications. As the Philippines transitions into a more international market, western products start to guide market behavior, particularly consumer adoption.

  • At a recent, enterprises based on online-service are established because of rapid growth of information network. These enterprises collect personal information and do customer management. If customers use a paid service, company send billing information to customer and customer pay it. Such circulation and management of information is big issue but most companies don't care of information security. Actually, personal information that was managed by largest internal open-market was exposed. For safe customer information management, this paper proposes the method that decrease load of RSA cryptography algorithm that is commonly used for preventing from illegal attack or hacking. The method for decreasing load was designed by Binary NAF Method and it can operates modular Exponentiation rapidly. We implemented modular Exponentiation algorithm using existing Binary Method and Windows Method and compared and evaluated it.

  • This study was designed to identity the degree of burden felt by mothers of children with nephrotic syndrome. Also, relations between the subject characteristics and burden were investigated to provide basis data for their family health and nursing intervention. The study subjects were composed of 70 mothers of nephrotic syndrome patients whose children were hospitalized in 2 Pediatric wards of University Hospital in Seoul and 1 in Pusan from Mar. 2nd, 1998 to May. 30th in the same year The questionnaires were used which dealt with burden of mothers. the questionnaires for this study designed and used by researcher placed their basis in Burden Measurement Instrument developed by Montgomery et. al (1985) and the reliability of the used instrument was .78. The data analysis was done by SPSS, t-test, ANOVA and Stepwise Multiple Regression. The results of were as follows. 1. Mean score of burden of subjects was 60.82(Maximum 86, standard deviation 1.244). 2. Of the mothers characteristics, the score of burden was high in case of no religion and low income. 3. Of the patients characteristics, the score of burden ranked as high in MCNS, doing oral therapy and injection therapy at the same time, and negative perceived patients' condition. 4. The degree of burden felt by mothers of children with nephrotic syndrome was significantly predicted by the level of pt's diagnosis(11%), pt's condition(8%), economic state (6%) and pt's sex (5%), respectively. In conclusion to above study, the researcher suggests that the development of instrument for measurement of burden is in much need. Relations between burden and social support should be studied to lessen burden of mothers of children with nephrotic syndrome.

  • Background: Insomnia is a common condition in cancer patients. In spite of the high prevalence its associations have not been well studied. Existing data suggests that insomnia is related to depression and pain. However, the impact of ongoing chemotherapy on sleep is not investigated. Aim: To study the relationship between insomnia and chemotherapy after analysing confounding variables. Materials and Methods: Consecutive patients who visited New England Oncology Clinic in Tamworth were recruited. Insomnia was assessed with the Bergen insomnia scale. The Montgomery Asberg Depression rating scale was used to measure depression. Pain was assessed with the Brief Pain inventory. Chronic medical conditions, type of cancer, side effects to chemotherapy, role of steroids and other drugs were studied as confounders. Results: A total of 56 patients participated in the study. Age ranged from 33 to 83 years (mean: 63.6, SD=10.97). There were 29 men and 27 women. 42 patients received at least one form of chemotherapy and 15 were receiving radiotherapy at the time of assessment. Mean insomnia score was significantly higher in those receiving chemotherapy than in those without chemotherapy (8.92 vs 17.2, two tailed p=0.005, 95% CI=2.63-13.71). There was no significant variation in insomnia scores in terms of chronic medical condition, type of cancer, psychiatric history, use of steroids or adverse effects of chemotherapy. However, total insomnia score was correlated with depression rating score (Pearson correlation, r=0.39, p=0.003) and magnitude of pain (r=0.37, p=0.006). On regression analysis only pain was found to be predictive of insomnia. Conclusions: Insomnia in patients with cancer is found to be associated with concurrent chemotherapy and correlated with degree of depression and pain. Identifying factors related to insomnia in cancer population has implications in its management and patient education.

  • The purpose of this study was to describe the perceived burden of the stroke patient's caregiver and related factors to analyze relationships between perceived burden and social supports. A convenient sample of 225 caregivers who take care for a stroke patient at home participated in this study. Caregiver's perceived burden was measured by the objective and subjective burden scale developed by Montgomery (1985). Related factors of burden were studied in terms of the patient's instrumental activties of daily living, cognitive function, caregiver's demographic variables and caregiver's illness intrusiveness. The results were as follows: (1) The mean of objective burden score was 4.5, and subjective burden score was 3.1. These scores show that caregivers perceive moderate level of burden. (2) Caregivers' objective burden was significantly related to caregivers's illness intrusiveness (r=.62), patient's IADL (r=-.33), and patient's cognitive function (r=-.15). The subjective burden was related to the caregiver's illness intrusiveness (r=.29), the patient's IADL (r=.24), and the caregiver's age(r=.23). (3) The percentage of stroke caregivers who perceived physical support was 49.1%. The percentage of those who perceived emotional support was 61.0%, and those who perceived financial support totaled 37.6%. (4) Caregivers who received any type of social supports perceived lower subjective burden, and caregivers who received physical or psychological support perceived lower objective burden. These results emphasized the necessity of a rehabilitation programs for stroke patients and support program for family caregivers.

  • Purpose. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor disabilities and increasing dependence on others for daily life activities with consequent impact on patients' and caregivers' quality of life. The aim of this study was to elucidate the burden on primary caregivers of patients with PD, and identify related factors. Methods. A cross-sectional descriptive study. Seventy-six primary caregivers of PD patients in a neurology out-patient clinic, Seoul, Korea completed structured questionnaires, of which 68 were analyzed. The structured self-report questionnaire included (1) demographic information on the caregivers, (2) information regarding the disease characteristics of the patients, and (3) the subjective and objective caregiver burdens as assessed on Montgomery, Gonyea, & Hooyman's scale. Results. The mean age of the caregivers was 54.56 years, and spouses represented the largest proportion (47.0%). Caregivers of PD patients experienced high levels of burden (mean scores on the subjective and objective burdens were 45.22 and 34.90, respectively), which were comparable to the caregiver burdens in stroke, and higher than the caregiver burdens in general chronic disease. Older caregivers and spousal caregivers experienced significantly higher burdens (p=.004 and p=.019, respectively). A greater motor disability and higher modified Hoehn and Yahr grade were related to higher caregiver burden (p=.001 and p=.018, respectively). Conclusion. Caring for PD patients is associated with a high level of caregiver burden. Therefore, healthcare professionals should identify the burden of caregivers who look after PD patients and develop comprehensive management strategies both for patients and their caregivers.

  • ;A new root canal instrument and instrumentation technique: a preliminary report. Cleaning and shaping the root canal system has been and continues to be a challenge for even the most experienced endodontist. Curved. narrow canals. in particular. cause difficulties for the beginner as well as the specialist. A new instrument designed to incorporate new concepts was developed to ameliorate the problems in cleaning and shaping root canal systems. This new instrument has been given the name of SW (Senia and Wildey). The new SW instrument uses controlled right and left rotational forces. This motion was used to clean and shape simulated root canals in plastic blocks and root canals in extracted teeth. Instrumentation appeared to be easier. faster. and more precise than with conventional instruments. especially in curved canals where there was remarkable reduction of canal transportation. A mechanical version of the SW instrument was also developed. It was used to flare the coronal portion of the root canal system. Wildey WL. Senia ES., Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol1989 Feb:67(2):198-207 Another look at root canal instrumentation. Several aspects of root canal instrumentation need additional research. Various factors must be considered in an analysis of instrumentation of the root canal system: the dentin that is cut: the technique used to cut it: the design of the instruments: the material and manufacturing process used to make the instruments: the irrigant used during the procedure: and the anatomic configuration of the root canal system. An analysis of these factors clearly indicates that existing root canal instruments and techniques are less than ideal and. in fact. do not accomplish what is expected of them. Root canals must be properly. but. at the same time. destructive and unnecessary removal of dentin should be kept to a minimum. The Flex-R and Canal Master instruments were developed to address some of the shortcomings of existing instruments and techniques. More scientifically based research is needed to fully evaluate these new instruments and techniques and to develop future instruments. Wildey WL; Senia ES.
