Two full-scale, precast, pretensioned box girders were subjected to shear-dominated loading, one under monotonic loads to failure and the other subjected to one-half million cycles of fatigue loads followed by monotonic ultimate loads. The number of cycles was selected to allow for comparison with previous research. The fatigue loads were applied in combination with occasional overloads. In the present study, fatigue loading reduced the shear capacity by only six percent compared to the capacity under monotonic loading. However, previous research on flexure-dominated girders subjected to the same number of repeated loads showed that fatigue loading changed the mode of failure from flexure to shear/flexure and the girder capacity dropped by 14 percent. The comparison of the measured data with calculated shear capacity from five different theoretical methods showed that the ACI code method, the compression field theory, and the modified compression field theory led to reasonable estimates of the shear strength. The truss model led to an overly conservative estimate of the capacity.
This article provides a discussion of the mathematic modeling of connections for designing and qualifying structures, systems, and components subject to monotonic or cyclic loading. To characterize the force-deformation behavior of connections under monotonic loading, a review of the Ramberg-Osgood, Richard-Abbott, and Menegotto-Pinto models is conducted, and it is shown that these nonlinear functions can be mathematically derived by scaling up or down a linear force-deformation function. A generalized four-parameter model for simulating connection behavior is investigated to facilitate nonlinear regression analysis. In order to perform seismic analysis of frameworks, a hysteretic model accounting for loading, unloading, and reloading is described using the established monotonic model. For preliminary analysis, a method is provided to quickly determine the model parameters that fit approximately with the observed data. To reach more accurate values of the parameters, the methods of nonlinear regression analysis are investigated and the modified Levenberg-Marquardt and separable nonlinear least-square algorithms are applied in determining the model parameters. Example case studies illustrate the procedure for the computation through the use of experimental/analytical data taken form the literature. Transformation of connection curves from the three-parameter model to the four-parameter model for structural analysis is conducted based on the modeling of connections subject to fire.
Interaction of lateral loading, combined with axial force needs to be determined with care in reinforced concrete (RC) one-dimensional structural members (1D SMs) such as beam-columns (BCs) and columns. RC 1D SMs under heavy axial loading are known to fail by brittle mode and small lateral displacements. In this paper, a macro element-based algorithm is proposed to analyze the RC 1D SMs under monotonic or cyclic combined loading. The 1D SMs are discretized into macro-elements (MEs) located between the critical sections and the inflection points. The critical sections are discretized into fixed rectangular finite elements (FRFE). The nonlinear behavior of confined and unconfined concretes and steel elements are considered in the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm has been validated by the results of experimental tests carried out on full-scale RC structural members. The evolution of ultimate strain at extreme compression fiber of a rectangular RC section for different orientations of lateral loading shows that the ultimate strain decreases with increasing the axial force. In the examined cases, this ultimate strain ranges from 0.0024 to 0.0038. Therefore, the 0.003 value given by ACI-318 code for ultimate strain, is not conservative and valid for the combined load cases with significant values of axial force (i.e. for the axial forces heavier than 70% of the ultimate axial force).
The flexural behaviour of symmetrically reinforced concrete (RC) columns cast of normal- and high-strength concrete under both monotonic and cyclic loading is studied based on an analytical procedure, which employs the actual stress-strain curves and takes into account the stress-path dependence of concrete and steel reinforcement. The analysis is particularly extended into the post-peak stage with large inelastic deformation at various applied axial load level. The effect of axial load on their complete flexural behaviour is then identified based on the results obtained. The axial load is found to have fairly large effect on the flexural behaviour of RC columns under both monotonic and cyclic loading. Such effects are discussed through examination of various aspects including the moment-curvature relationship, moment capacity, flexural ductility, variation of neutral axis depth and steel stress.
The novel form of composite walling system consists of two skins of profiled steel sheeting with an in-fill of concrete. Such walling system can be used as shear elements in steel framed building subjected to lateral load. This paper presents the results of small-scale model tests on composite wall and its components manufactured from very thin sheeting and micro-concrete tested under monotonic and cyclic shear loading conditions. The heavily instrumented small-scale tests provided information on the load-deformation response, strength, stiffness, strain condition, sheet-concrete interaction and failure modes. Analytical models for shear strength and stiffness are derived with some modification factor to take into account the effect of quasi-static cycling loading. The performance of design equations is validated through experimental results.
Structural deterioration arises due to aging, environmental effects, deficiencies during design and construction phase, and overloading. Experimental and numerical investigations are carried out in this study to evaluate the performance of control and flexural deficient reinforced concrete (RC) beams under monotonic loading. Three levels of flexural deficiency are considered in this study. After confirming load carrying capacities of control and flexural deficient beams, the flexural deficient RC beams are strengthened with carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) fabric. CFRP strengthened RC beams are tested under monotonic loading and compared with the performance of control specimen. Further, non-linear finite element analyses are also carried out to evaluate the flexural performance of control, deficient and CFRP strengthened flexural deficient RC beams. There is good correlation between results of experimental and numerical investigations. Numerical approach presented in this study can be adopted for assessing the adequacy of CFRP retrofit measure.
This paper describes the general trends of the stress-strain behavior of Korean weathered soil prior to failure and behavior at failure under triaxial loading. The isotropically consolidated samples were tested in a testing device under monotonic undrained loading. Relative density, effective mean pressure and fine content were the factors varied in the experimental investigation. The test results were analyzed and their behaviors were interpreted within the framework of plasticity constitutive model for a weathered Korean silty sand. Possible physical bases for the proposed forms are discussed. Validation of the applied model using the laboratory results is also given.
The objective of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of rotating orthotropic axes model in analyzing reinforced concrete planar members under cyclic as well as monotonic loading. The structural members to be addressed are moderately reinforced beams, columns, beam-column joints, and shear walls, whose failure occurs due to compressive crushing after extensive crack propagation, The rotating orthotropic axes model which is usually used for monotonic loading is developed for cyclic loading. With the existing cyclic material models of reinforcing steel and bond-slip, this material model is used for the finite element analysis. For monotonic loading, the analytical results of the rotating orthotropic axes model are compared with reinforced concrete beams which have brittle failure. For Shear wall members under cyclic loading, the analyses are compared with the experiments for the ultimate load capacity, nonlinear deformation, and pinching effect due to crack opening and closing.

Earthquakes not only produce additional load on the structures and underlying soil, but also change the strength characteristics of the soil. Therefore, in order to analyze soil structures for stability, the behaviour after earthquake must be considered. In this paper, a series of cyclic triaxial tests and monotonic triaxial tests were carried out to investigate the undrained shear strength and liquefaction strength characteristics of Nak-Dong River sand soils which were subjected to cyclic loading. The sample was consolidated in the first stage and then subjected to stress controlled cyclic loading with 0.1Hz. After the cyclic loading, the cyclic-induced excess pore water pressure was dissipated by opening the drainage valve and the sample was reconsolidated to the initial effective mean principal stress(p/sub c/'). After reconsolidation, the monotonic loading or cyclic loading were applied to the specimen. In the results, the undrained shear strength and liquefaction strength characteristics depended on the pore pressure ratio(Ur=U/p/sub c/'). The volume change following reconsolidation can be a function of cyclic-induced excess pore water pressure and the maximum double amplitude of axial strain.
The drained and undrained behavior of pure silt was investigated experimentally. Special attention was given to the stress-strain behavior of silt prior to failure and behavior at failure under monotonic and cyclic loading. A pure silica flour was chosen to form samples with two different densities of D,=80%, eo=0.68 and D,=35%, eo=0.9. The isotropically consolidated samples were tested in the triaxial testing device under monotonic undrained, drained compression and extension conditions. Also samples were tested under cyclic undrained condition. Based on the experimental results. it was qualitively identified that the overall behavior of silt is similar to that of sand. When compared with clay, silt shows a significantly different behavior due to its dilatant nature under both the monotonic and cyclic shear loadings.
