  • In this study, I was focusing on LED (Light Emitting Diode) light effect in growth of chrysanthemum. For this reason, I formed six monochromatic lights (red 650 nm, 647 nm, 622 nm, blue 463 nm, 450 nm, white), six mixed lights sources red : blue (9 : 1, 8 : 2, 7 : 3, 6 : 4, 5 : 5) and 3 control beds in light sources ratio between rad : blue (8 : 2) including sun light. It was totally 15 control beds. Depending on light investigation time in growth, 6/6 (on/off) was highest in the length of plant, the number of leaves, the fresh dry and leaf area. But statistical significance wasn't accepted in general. In case of monochromatic lights, length of plant and leaf area is biggest in the Blue 450 mm and the length of root is highest in RED 650 mm. Except for this 3 measuring points (length of plant, the number of leaves and fresh weight), sun light and white was highest. Besides there are monochromatic light effect but various wavelength range in light sources are needed to crop growth. In terms of mixed light resources, except for sun light, It turned out the length of plant is highest in the highest red light rate red : blue (9 : 1), and Red : white (7 : 3) is highest in fresh weight and dry weight. The sun light is the highest one in the leaf area. The results from LED light effect in growth of chrysanthemum are obviously effect on growth and building up the shape. We need to choose suitable light sources in the monochromatic lights and mixed lights for growing high quality of chrysanthemum or Supplemental Lighting.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of monochromic light-emitting diode (LED) light with different color on the growth and reproductive performances of white Roman breeder geese. A randomized complete batch design was utilized for the trial, and the replicate was regarded as one batch. Twenty ganders and fifty-five dames were used in batch 1 (started on 2011/6/17 and ended on 2012/1/31), thirty ganders and eighty-four dames were used in batch 2 (started on 2012/3/23 and ended on 2012/10/26), and thirty ganders and seventy-two dames were used in batch 3 (started on 2013/3/12 and ended on 2013/12/20). Two hundred and ninety-one geese were randomly assigned to 6 rooms in an environmentally controlled house. They were randomly allotted into one of three monochromatic light treatments: Blue, red, or white. The results showed that there was no significant difference in body weight among the three lighting groups at any point throughout the experimental period. However, compared to the blue light group, significantly more eggs were produced by the red and white light groups (p<0.05). Furthermore, the laying period of the red light group was significantly longer than that of other two groups (p<0.05). In conclusion, our results suggested that red LED-light has the best effect on reproductive performance (i.e. longer laying period and higher total eggs number) at 30 lux light intensity, and is therefore a better choice for the management of breeding geese than blue or white LED-light.

  • This study was carried out to develop an efficient plant growth system that can be controlled by altering the wavelength and illumination using a LED module. If it is possible to develop a system that can be controlled in this manner, utilizing different characteristics in the meaningful wavelength band depending on the growth time or type of plant, the plant growth conditions can be optimized. In order to this, red, green, blue and white LEDs are arrayed in a rectangle, consisting of LED modules which can be combined with each other. Consequently, the array can be used to select the optimal light conditions with monochromatic red, green, blue and white LEDs, or mixed LEDs, for plant growth. Experiments on the characteristics of the wavelengths to evaluate the efficiency of the plant growth system were performed. The usefulness of the system was demonstrated through a cultivation test involving several special plants.

  • The increase in the number of mud shrimps Upogebia major is a concern because of their negative effects on shellfish aquaculture, including Manila clam Venerupis philippinatum along the west coast of Korea. This study developed a behavioral analysis system for aquatic animals using a set of monochromatic light-emitting diode (LED) modules covering the visible light range at similar intervals. Movements of mud shrimp were monitored using a tracking system under illumination with infra-red light and an LED of 660 nm wavelength without provoking stimulation. The minimum light intensity needed to induce a photoresponse by the mud shrimp was $10{\mu}mole/m^2/s$ under the conditions tested. Of the six kinds of LED illuminations tested, the most sensitive response was obtained with illumination with the 505 nm LED, followed in order by LEDs with peak wavelengths of $525nm{\fallingdotseq}465nm$ > $405nm{\fallingdotseq}590nm$ > 660 nm. These findings should help to identify LED sources that efficiently induce movement of the mud shrimp and also for monitoring movement without stimulating.

  • The artificial light sources for growth of plant are usually high-pressure sodium lamp, metal haloids lamp, and fluorescent light; however, these light sources have relatively weaker Red and Blue lights that are necessary for growth of plants. Especially the effect of Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD) is pointed out as the weakness. Meanwhile, LED light source can be selected by specific wavelength to greatly improve the effect of PPFD. In this regard, this paper aims to investigate the promotion of plant growth by measuring photosynthetic photon flux density (hereafter referred to as PPFD) according to changes in light quality of the LED light sources. Towards this end, LED light sources for plant growth were produced with 4 kinds of mono-chromatic lights and 6 kinds of combined lights by mixing red, blue, green and white lights. A comparative analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of optical properties and PPFD on plants (green leaf lettuce) using the produced light sources. The results monochromatic light has fastest growth rate, but plant growth conditions have poor. This being so, mixed light is suitable for the green leaf lettuce.

  • An light-emitting diode (LED)-based light source was used as a monochromatic light source to determine the responses of raw ginseng roots (Panax ginseng Meyer) to specific emission spectra with respect to the production of ginsenosides. The ginsenoside content in the ginseng roots changed in response to the LED light treatments at $25^{\circ}C$ relative to the levels in the control roots that were treated in the dark or at $4^{\circ}C$ for 7 d. Ginseng roots were exposed to LEDs with four different peak emission wavelengths, 380, 450, 470, and 660 nm, in closed compartments. Compared with the control $4^{\circ}C$-treated roots, roots that were treated with 450 and 470 nm light showed a significantly increased production of ginsenosides (p<0.05), with increases of 64.9% and 74.1%, respectively. The contents of the ginsenosides $Rb_2$, Rc, and $Rg_1$ were significantly higher (p<0.05) in the 450 and 470 nm-treated root samples. The ratio of protopanaxadiol ginsenosides ($Rb_1$, $Rb_2$, Rc, and Rd) to protopanaxatriol ginsenosides ($Rb_1$, $Rb_2$, Re, and Rf) was significantly higher (p<0.05) in the 450 and 470 nm-treated root samples than in the control $4^{\circ}C$-treated roots. This is the first report that demonstrates the increase and conversion of ginsenosides in raw ginseng roots in response to exposure to LED light.

  • This study evaluated the effects of stocking density on performance and behavioral activities of 35-day-old broilers in relation to incandescent white bulb (IB) light and LED yellow and white light. A total of 1,650 day-old chicks were weighed and randomly allocated into six treatment groups in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement based on stocking density (14 birds m-2 and 22 birds m-2) and color of lights (IB; monochromatic LED yellow and white light) with five replicates for each treatment. The results showed that final body weight, weight gain and feed conversion of broilers were improved at a stocking density of 14 birds m-2 with exposure to LED lights. Similarly, broilers spent more time exhibiting inactive behavior (e.g. standing) and active behaviors (e.g. walking and walking plus pecking) under 14 birds m-2 with exposure to lights as compared that of other treatment groups. Regarding a stocking density of 22 birds m-2, broilers performance traits were negatively affected and also activities were less. The performance of broilers was not significantly altered for the main factor of different lights but broilers were less inactive (e.g less time spent sitting plus standing) and more time spent active behavior in walking under IB light than LED light. Thus, we concluded that a stocking density 14 birds m-2 with exposure to LED light significantly improved broiler performance and behavioral activity and these conditions could therefore improve the overall welfare of farmed chickens.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of light quality using either monochromatic or combined LEDs on the growth and antioxidant accumulation of Agastache rugosa cultivated under hydroponics for 4 weeks. This experiment was performed in a controlled-environment room at $22{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ and $18{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ (day and night temperatures, respectively) and 50-70% relative humidity, with a provided photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of $180{\pm}5{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ and irradiated with either monochromatic (W10 and R10) or mixed LEDs (W2B1G1, R3B1, R2B1G1, and W2B1G1) with a differing ratio of each LED's PPFD and fluorescent lighting (FL: control) with a 16/8 h photoperiod. Fresh and dry weights were highest for plants grown under the W2B1G1 treatment. A. rugosa grown with R10 had the greatest plant height but the lowest SPAD among all treatments. The concentration of rosmarinic acid in plants grown under W2B1G1 was significantly higher than that of plants grown under other treatments. Tilianin content was significantly higher in R3B1 than in the other treatments. However, whole-plant rosmarinic acid and tilianin content was the highest under the W2B1G1 condition. To cultivate A. rugosa in a plant factory, mixed-LED light conditions with W2B1G1 is considered to be more advantageous for the growth and antioxidant accumulation of A. rugosa. It is though that the total whole-plant antioxidant content is more crucial for commercial use; the present study demonstrates the potential to achieve higher content of functional materials in plants through the selection of light quality.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effect of artificial light source and photoperiod on the growth of leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) 'Seonhong Jeokchukmyeon' in a closed-type plant production system. Seedlings were grown under 3 light sources, fluorescent lamp (FL, Philips Co. Ltd., the Netherlands), WL #1 (Hepas Co. Ltd., Korea), and WL #2 (FC Poibe Co., Ltd., Korea), each with 3 photoperiods, 12/12, 18/6, and 24/0 (Light/Dark). An irradiance spectrum analysis showed that FL has various peaks in the 400-700 nm range, while WL #1 and WL #2 have only one monochromatic peak at 450 and 550 nm, respectively. The greatest plant height, fresh and dry weights were obtained in the 24/0 (Light/Dark) photoperiod. The 24/0 (Light/Dark) photoperiod treatment promoted vegetative growth of the leaf area. Length of the longest root, number of leaves, fresh weight, and total anthocyanin contents were greater in FL than in either WL #1 or #2. The greatest chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) was found in the 12/12 (Light/Dark) photoperiod with FL treatment. The energy use efficiency of the LED increased by about 35-46% as compared to FL. Results suggest a possibility of LED being used as a substitute light source for fluorescent lamp for lettuce cultivation in a plant factory system.
