This paper describes a Unified Chassis Control (UCC) strategy to prevent vehicle rollover by integrating individual modular chassis control systems such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Continuous Damping Control (CDC). The UCC threshold is determined from a rollover index computed by estimated roll angle, roll rate and measured lateral acceleration. A direct yaw moment control method is used to design the ESC based on a 2-D bicycle model. Similarly, the CDC is designed based on a 2-D roll model using a direct roll moment control method. The performance of the proposed UCC scheme is investigated and compared to that of modular chassis controllers through computer simulations using a validated vehicle simulator. It is shown that the proposed the UCC can lead to improvements in vehicle stability and efficient actuation of chassis control systems.
This paper describes the development of a Stewart platform-based robot force sensor with distinctive structure of ball joints. The number of ball joints is only a half of the similar style sensors, so it is possible to reduce size and weight of the sensor. The structure of ball joint is described and discussed. Furthermore, we use strain gauges, but not liner voltage differential transformers, as sensing elements, in order to reduce size and weight of the sensor. It is also proposed that beams are replaced with pipes as sensing elements of the sensor. The ball joints and sensing elements with pipes can effectively reduce the error of the sensor. A geometric analysis model is also proposed. The external force and its moment can be measured with this model. Moreover, the performance of this sensor was tested. The test results conducted to evaluate the sensing capability of the sensor is reported and discussed.
This study introduces simple derivation of optimum load factors based on both cornell's MFOSM (Mean First Order End Moment) methods and Lind - Hasofers AFOSM (Advanced First Order 2nd Moment) methods and demonstrates the relationship between the optimum reliability, the load factors, the probability distributions selected to model the load, and a measure of relative failure cost. Although some of the cost parameters cannot be evaluated accurately and the upper tail characteristics of the distributions of the random loads remain uncertainty, this optimum reliability formulation provides insight on which Parameters are most significant in selecting appropriate load criteria for structure design.
Application of reduced web beam section (RWBS) as a sacrificial fuse element has become a popular research field in recent years. Weakening of beam web in these connections may cause local web buckling around the opening area which can affect cyclic behavior of connection including: maximum load carrying capacity, strength degradation rate, dissipated energy, rotation capacity, etc. In this research, effect of local web buckling on the cyclic behavior of RWBS connections is investigated using finite element modeling (FEM). For this purpose, a T-shaped moment connection which has been tested under cyclic loading by another author is used as the reference model. Fracture initiation in models is simulated using Cyclic Void Growth Model (CVGM) which is based on micro-void growth and coalescence. Included in the results are: effect of opening corner radii, opening dimensions, beam web thickness and opening reinforcement. Based on the results, local web buckling around the opening area plays a significant role on the cyclic behavior of connection and hence any parameter affecting the local web buckling will affect entire connection behavior.

An algorithm to detect the number of discontinuity points of the variance function in regression model is proposed. The proposed algorithm is based on the left and right one-sided kernel estimators of the second moment function and test statistics of the existence of a discontinuity point coming from the asymptotic distribution of the estimated jump size. The finite sample performance is illustrated by simulated example.
In this paper, we main study the strong law of large numbers and complete convergence for weighted sums of asymptotically almost negatively associated (AANA, in short) random variables, by using the Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund type moment inequality and Roenthal type moment inequality for AANA random variables. As an application, the complete consistency for the weighted linear estimator of nonparametric regression models based on AANA errors is obtained. Finally, some numerical simulations are carried out to verify the validity of our theoretical result.
Nonlinear dynamic analysis is performed to calculate the response of U-shaped cantilever retaining structure under seismic loading using the finite element (FE) analysis program OpenSees. A particular interest of the study is to evaluate whether the moment demand in the cantilever can be accurately predicted, because it is an important component in the seismic design. The numerical model is validated against a centrifuge test that was performed on cantilever walls with dry medium dense sand in backfill. Seismic analysis is performed using the pressure-dependent, multi-yield-surface, plasticity based soil constitutive model implemented in OpenSees. Normal springs are used to simulate the soil-structure interface. Comparison with centrifuge show that FE analysis provides good estimates of both the acceleration response and bending moment. The lateral earth pressure near the bottom of the wall is overestimated in the numerical model, but this does not contribute to a higher prediction of the moment.

In this article we attempted reliability analysis of a component under the stress-strength pattern with both classical as well as Bayesian techniques. The main focus is made to develop the theory for dealing the reliability problems in various circumstances for bivariate environmental set up in context of Bayesian paradigm. A stress-strength based model describes the life of a component which has strength (Y) and is subjected to stress(X). We develop the Bayes and moment estimators of reliability of a component for each of the three possible conditions, under the assumption that the two stresses (i.e. $X_1$ and $X_2$) on a component are dependent and follow a Bivariate exponential (BVE) of Marshall-Olkin distribution, the strength of a component (Y) following exponential distribution is independent of the stresses. The simulation study is performed with Markov Chain Monte Carlo technique via Gibbs sampler to obtain the estimates of Bayes estimators of reliability, are compared with moment estimators of reliabilities on the basis of absolute biases.
Current design methods as well as the majority of the previous researches for shear strength of the reinforced concrete are based on empirical method. There is a need to propose the rational models based on analytical approach. This paper presents the modified strut-and-tie model for reinforced concrete columns, under axial compression, shear, and flexural moment, considering tensile strength of concrete. Using this model, the strength and the failure mode of R/C columns are investigated, and the proposed models are compared with test data available in the literature.
